Hello.

What is the best interpreter to get to play interactive fiction games?
Is there one that has music and sounds?

Thanks.

2018-06-15 08:29:30

Short answer, no, interactive fiction means text.

Long answer, music and sounds would be a function of the game not the interpreter. Zcode, glulks and I believe adrift formats had the capacity to play music and sounds during gameplay, but not many Zcode or Glulks games actually took advantage of this, indeed while kerkerkruip (more an rpg than a traditional if game anyway), had a theme song, and I believe Sherlock from the old infocom titles had some atmospheric wind playing during the game, there really aren't many, since interactive fiction is all about the text.

For a good if interpreter your choices are pretty much winfrotz for zcode games, winglulks or wingit for glulks games, or filfre which does several formats.

filfre I believe works better with jaws, but then again I've not tried it with Nvda and the if interpreter addon so I'm not sure.

Btw, you can find links to all those interpreters I mention in the db.

Hth.

With our dreaming and singing, Ceaseless and sorrowless we! The glory about us clinging Of the glorious futures we see,
Our souls with high music ringing; O men! It must ever be
That we dwell in our dreaming and singing, A little apart from ye. (Arthur O'Shaughnessy 1873.)

Yes, Filfre is a good interpreter with Jaws, the problem is that it has not been updated for a very long time. This is very noticeable in Glulx games where Filfre can become very slow. And worse, there are a few nasty interpretation bugs that prevent you from completing a few games. I use Filfre for Z-Code and Wingit for Glulx. Wingit has absolutely no waiting times.

We are pleased, that you made it through the final challenge, where we pretended we were going to murder you. We are throwing a party in honor of your tremendous success. Place the device on the ground, then lay on your stomach with your arms at your sides. A party associate will arrive shortly to collect you for your party. Assume the party submission position or you will miss the party.

There is also Lectrote, which supports several different game formats.

The game Illuminismo Iniziato has sounds.
The game is in English.

For text games with audio for glulx, try six, which is a pretty cool hide n seek game with unlockables. Also try transperent, which is a horror exploration game. That last one is brimming with  sounds from start to finish.

What is the best one to get for the iPhone?

2018-06-16 16:48:46

Try frotz. That lets you play z-code games. It also has a built in search system so you can add more games to your library. If its still up there, destino games is good and that one has sound.
There was a creepy game written for the quest interpreter ported to iphone that had sound but I don't remember its name.

I know nothing about games for Iphone, but here is a few games with sounds or music.
I forgot about Six and Transparent.
Thanks for reminding since I like Transparent.
Now for my list...

The author of Six made a commercial game called leadlight Gamma.
This game has music and graphics.
This is RPG where the heroine wakes one day from a nap in her school library and discoveres that most of her classmates are dead or injured.
Here is the link to the website:
https://leadlightgamma.heiresssoftware. … index.html
.
The Castle of Vourtram
This game has sounds and music.
Basically, the player has to free a princess from an evil sorcerer who conquered almost whole kingdom and forced the king to exile.
The player has to choose to play as a mage, a thief or a warrior and for each class the playthrough is different.
I also like that in the ending scene the hero can choose to ditch the princess and live his life as an adventurer.

.
Cryptozookeeper
This is a RPG in which a group of people create creatures from DNA of various animals and has to battle them on the arena to raise their level.
Everything for plot reasons, of course.

.
And now my favourite.
The Words Of Power.
A student enters a fantasy word after fiddling with a strange device in the lab from which her teacher disappeared.
But this is only the beginning, the plot is more complicated.
Something about a king who stole his court wizards wife and the said wizard was not pleased.

Speaking of De Steno games.
Did you know that the person Michael Barnes who is mention in the description of the app is me?
I also did the voice for the sheriff for the Windows version of Dodge city Desperados.
Sadly the person who was the coder of De Steno games has not been able to update the code to work on newer versions of iOS.

If this is a game that everyone would like to get I will reach out to the coder and see if we can update the app.

Where can I download Lectrote? Does it support TADS and Adrift? I want an accessible interpreter that supports the most formats. I want to get back into these games. Filfre wasn't very usable whenI last tried it so I'll avoid that one.

Grab my Adventure at C: stages Right here.

@9 Thats pretty cool! I wish the app was on android. Would it be hard to port? Regardless I would like it if the code was updated so I can play it when I get my new phone

Here is the link for Lectrote.
Website:
https://github.com/erkyrath/lectrote
.
Download:
https://github.com/erkyrath/lectrote/releases
.
It supports Glulx, Zcode, Hugo and some other format I do not recognize.
Unfortunately it does not support Adrift or Tads games.
I would like to have a good, accessible program to play Adrift games.
I have some Adrift games I like and I am stuck with the stupid Adrift Runner.

2018-06-17 08:07:38

What about .xblorb/.gblorb and .gam though?
Allot of newer games use gblorb for instance...
I did see a thing called HTML TADS that seemed promising, never messed with it though, it has a playkit you can install.
Also something called Win TADS.

2018-06-17 14:34:13

For Glulx games use Windows Glulxe, Windows Git, or Lectrote.
For Tads games use HTML TADS.

I tried some other program for Tads games, but without success.
It seems HTML TADS remains the only option.

Does anyone know if Quest is accessible, or do I still have to play Quest games online?

2018-06-17 23:12:28

Oh I didn't realize that GBlorb and XBlorb were just rappers.

2018-06-18 03:06:08

Do anyone know if there is other interpreters for the iPhone besides Frotz?
Concerning De Steno games sadly enough the programmer has not been able to to get in touch with in the last few years.

2018-06-20 23:37:41

Can someone tell me where to get games to run on the Lectrote?
When I went to the interactive fiction data base and downloaded Zork it came up as a .app file instead of a format that Lectrote can read.

2018-06-20 23:59:47

Here are links to websites with games supported by Lectrote:

Are there any games that is like Alter Aeon and Final Fantasy?

2018-06-21 17:32:04

First thing that comes to mind if you want something offline are the eamon games released across various platforms. Your character doesn't level up but your stats and skill improves over time as you go on different adventures.

I am almost certain that Mr. David Kinder's Windows Frotz and Windows Glulxe could be updated to speak directly to the screen readers using some software library, such as Tolk. The software programs mentioned above can speak through Microsoft Speech Application Programming Interface (SAPI). I believe that the programs can be further enhanced by adding some functionality that allows users to get certain information about the game, such as reading the status bar, by pressing some keystrokes. I once tried to recompile Windows Glulxe using the most recent version of Visual Studio with failure because Windows Glulxe depends on some outdated software libraries. It is not a difficult job to bring the programs to today’s standards, so they can be compiled on modern IDEs. But I am not the one who could do it.
