Just thought some people might find this information interesting. Google has had a lot of flak recently.

First is the incident where Street View cars record wireless data. If you use any kind of encryption you're fine, but they recorded entire emails and passwords as the cars drove by from unsecured wireless networks. They initially claimed they only stored network names to use for location purposes, so you can tell where you are via google maps, but it emerged that was false. They had begun to delete the data but have been instructed not to since this is tampering with evidence, they will be deleting it as countries conclude their legal investigations.

Also is the news that Google has avoided paying 60 billion dollars in taxes by a method which is technically legal, involving routing funds through subsidiaries in the Republic of Ireland, the Netherlands, and finally Bermuda where there is no corporate tax. This is $60 billion in taxes to the US government, no figures are presented for what they may or may not have avoided paying to other countries. Apparently all the big companies do it but Google have the most success, getting an effective tax rate of two point odd percent instead of the US rate of 35% or the UK rate of 28%. These are tax rates for corporations not individuals by the way.

All this sums up to quite a troubling picture for the big G. Even the mainstream media would find this amount of news difficult to ignore, meaning Google is likely to suffer serious downturn in its reputation.

Funny, I always thought better of google generally. the tax business I don't mind as much sinse, ---- as you said yourself, pretty much all big companies do it, but the business of collecting data, ---- well that's seriously dodgy.

With our dreaming and singing, Ceaseless and sorrowless we! The glory about us clinging Of the glorious futures we see,
Our souls with high music ringing; O men! It must ever be
That we dwell in our dreaming and singing, A little apart from ye. (Arthur O'Shaughnessy 1873.)

That's in addition to Google's past decision to archive books online, if they aren't attributed to any particular author for royalties they decided to put them up anyway rather than trying to locate someone to pay royalties to. They didn't even ask permission for books which were attributed as I recall. They've also ignored countries whose governments objected to Street View and gone ahead and done it anyway, on the basis that there isn't a law against it even though there has in some cases been serious media or political opposition.

Oh and many cases where there have been issues with invasion of privacy regarding Google's pictures, bearing in mind that they're taken from a camera on top of a raised pole on the car's roof as it drives along. It sometimes can see over fences etc which would normally block someone from seeing into private property. Also major issues with face blurring and car number plate blurring not working. There are times when it caught someone mooning the camera and blurred their behind but not their face.

Frankly Google are pretty dismissive of anyone who objects to anything at all they do. So far they had a decent reputation among those who hadn't heard of their escapades, but it is getting harder and harder not to notice these blunders.

Oh there is also the time they publicly released data on what users had been searching for, by which user searched for it. They didn't identify the user but researchers in at least one case managed to fairly easily identify who had been making the searches, the IP address the searches came from wasn't given but they were identified as all being from the same person. That didn't go down well either. Looking for information local to you on Google was the means they used to work out who was doing the searching, they looked at the searches that referred to things in a locality rather than general searches. The woman who had done the searches was most shocked.

Wow, sounds like google could be in some serious trouble. Collecting data from other people is absolutely not the right thing to do.
