Hey guys

I'm Huw and I've been on audiogames forums for years but have never posted on the main general game discussion forum so I thought I'd come and introduce myself and present Warsim The Realm of Aslona

Warsim is a game that wasn't developed for visually impaired users, but is a text based game with a crude system of ascii graphics. Upon being approached many years ago by Audiogames' Dark, I spent a few days and produced a graphic-less version which has since been in development for 5 years.

In that time the audiogames forum has been a huge help in both developing the game and keeping it supported, with easily over 1000 bugs fixes due to audiogames users, and 100s of features added, and we've even got users like Bookrage, Niklas, and Defender represented in game as characters.

The game itself is a complex and deep kingdom management game that is deceptively easy to play but has a mountain of content to explore. It puts the player in the shoes of the ruler of a fantasy kingdom in a wacky fantasy world and has a huge emphasis on choice, you can choose to become a dictator and send everyone who visits you to the dungeons, or you could waste the kingdoms treasury on scorpion fights and gnome battles.

Some of the games notable features are:

Over 100 locations to explore, some of them very huge
1000s of throne room visitors from gamblers, and singers, to beggars and mercenaries
Over 94 million randomly generated races to occupy your world that can all change gameplay and make each world unique
An arena system where you can watch heroes rise and fall, host tournaments, and bet on fights
20+ mini games from simple dice games in taverns to snail racing tournaments and more
Procedurally generated bards that whistle, strum, and grunt their horrificly bad music to you
And tons more

I have worked extremely hard on this game for years and I genuinely believe if you are interested in rpg and management games then you will love Warsim.

It's rated 97% positive on steam from over 600 reviews and has sold just under 30'000 copies so far in it's development, which has been amazing for me and allowed me to work full time on it.

Warsim is available on both steam and itch.io but I have been told itch.io is more screen reader friendly, here are links to both pages for the interested

Steam - https://store.steampowered.com/app/6595 … of_Aslona/
Itch - https://huw2k8.itch.io/warsim

And if anyone has questions at all, I am super active on these forums so I'll always reply and am happy to chat!

This topic is perfect for replacing the previous one in new releases, given it's an announcement of game release. The original warsim topic wasn't created by you anyway. Love the game.:)

Hi.
I've read about the game for years, and I gave the free version a try long time ago, but never really got into the game.
I assume the free version you link to is an old version of the game. Would it be fair to try out the free version to see if I like the game?

Best regards SLJ.

hello! i have this game on steam, but i dont understand is there screen reader support or i should use OCR for playing? best regards!

2021-10-30 19:30:34

@SLJ, Hey mate I appreciate you giving the game a go in the past. I think to say the old version of the game is outdated would be an understatement, the game has had 5000+ changes since that version of the game and I'm not joking haha.

What is it in particular that you didn't enjoy if you can recall? I listen to a lot of feedback so a mountain of common issues people were having got resolved.

@Igggggoreha, Hello mate thanks for the support getting the game on steam. So once the game is open type 3 and press enter, then type 1 and press enter and your game will now be ascii-less

Hi @Wastelander.
I'll buy the game on Itch and give it a try. I'm not sure on why exactly I stopped playing the game. I remember it being quite overwhelming, but I'll give it a try again and give some feedback.

Best regards SLJ.

i solve my problem. i was a problem in nvda settings

2021-10-30 23:10:21

Hi.
It turns out that I bought the game two years ago, but I forgot all about it. smile
I have given the game a try again, and wow there are so much content. It's quite overwhelming, and I'm not sure on what to do. I've only played one year so far, but might play some more later on. I wish the game would give less choices so it doesn't feel that overwhelming.
The content, the sounds, the accessibility and pretty much everything is really great. But having all those choices and all the content thrown at you from the very beginning makes me switch to other less overwhelming games.

Best regards SLJ.

and that's the awesomeness in warsim. so much for you to enjoy

2021-10-31 01:54:34

The thing about warsim is while there is alot to do, you don't have to do everything at one point. You don't have to go exploring immediately, you don't have to fight others instantly, ETC. What I usually do though is try and get Monfort mine first, if I'm exploring, and on the domestic front adjust the laws to my liking, and get a Stuerd. I also like to sack the General and Diplomat so that I can get a new lot. Often times you can get better generals for less

@igggggoreha, I'm glad you solved the issue, I hope you enjoy the game mate!

@SLJ, Hey mate, well awesome to hear you already have the game so thanks for the support. As for the overwhelming thing I totally understand and that's a valid way to feel from the experience. It doesn't occur to me to see it that way because I guess I'm so familiar with the game but if there is anything you can think might reduce that initial overwhelming-ness when you start the game I'd be happy to hear it.

I think the game itself while being definitely full of stuff you can do you don't really need to do any of it. If you want a more chill game I'd play on one of the easier modes where you have a lot of money and land as this makes it pretty hard to lose.

You don't need to explore, or see throne room visitors, or upgrade things, or change laws, but you can do any of those at your leisure. Ending the turn progresses your kingdom on and lets you know the happenings of the world, some of which you can interact with or ignore. And then you can choose to attack a kingdom, although I am currently working on a feature where the player will be able to assign military matters to their general if they don't wish to deal with them so we're nearly there haha.

If there's any things that you feel overwhelm you that you'd like to ask questions about to clear up I am absolutely happy to chat about them, but honestly I think if you have a little explore and play a few more years it might click better for you as once you get a hang of what is at your disposal you can do what you want without feeling as overwhelmed.

@Hard to destroy reptile, Thank you mate, very lovely to read that!

@JayJay, Hey mate, great seeing you here. That's a great point, you have no requirement to actually do anything, it's just that the game typically rewards you for indulging in the world. And that's a great intro stategy, I usually keep my first staff just out of sentimentality but you are definitely right about getting better staff.

The best bet for any beginner to the game, when everything seems new and confusing: try, die and screw everything up just to see how it is. Warsim doesn't kill your progress what so ever. Save before you do and you'll have endless fun destroying or building your kingdom. I used to start on easy or normal. Now I always go for insane. It's just more challenging that way. It doesn't take grinding or lengthy practice. It takes strategy. Just screwing things up on purpose to explore game mechanics doesn't hurt.

@Mata, Oh absolutely, It's a great way to crash course the game, good tip!

already bought this game on Steam a long time ago, thank you for such an amazing project. I wish you had as many copies sold on all platforms as possible. I personally love Steam. :-)

2021-10-31 10:00:32

# 11 is actually not a difficult game. I just like the content that appears. you can learn it gradually. about the auto attack by the general. I think it will kill the gameplay. but I could be wrong. I understand if there is a car sale of slaves in the forts ...

2021-10-31 10:02:11

just what to do then if there is an auto attack. :-)

2021-10-31 12:09:39

Hi.
Thanks all for your replies and great tips.
@Wastelander: You're welcome. I'm glad to support you, and I'm surprised the game is that cheep.
I have thought about how to make the game less overwhelming for new players:
Make a beginner mode which can be disabled if you wish. In this mode, you start by having the most important things unlocked. For example, if batteling others is important, then this is unlocked. If assigning jobs to others is important, then this is unlocked.
Then, you play a few years, and more and more things gets unlocked. If you then wish to see all the content, you can disable the beginner mode. If you feel too overwhelmed, then you can turn it on again to have them unlocked as you play.
Thanks for the tip telling that it doesn't hurt to totally mess up your kingdom just to get better at the game. Maybe I've missed something in the tutorial, but that would be great to have explained there as well.
Again, I'm really impressed by the content. I think the game would make even more sales if features like my suggestion could be implemented, so it feels less overwhelming to new players. Maybe make some Youtube videos with tutorials if that hasn't been done already. Not for blind people, but for all people. smile
Since the game is played in the terminal, would it then be possible to have a Mac version and Linux version of the game as well? That would be awesome.
Oh by the way, I'm having a small issue with NVDA not reading all the output automatically. The window is maximised.

Best regards SLJ.
