Hi. As the title says; I have the orbit reader 20 plus.

I got it and the sd card and instructions weren't included so I had to phone RNIB to get that sorted.

Then I started reading with the thing. I know for a fact I prefer speech now; braille is nice but holy shit this display hurts. When they said signage quolity braille, they weren't kidding, it's so... Sharp.

I'll probably end up using this device on and off for about a year and then bin it. I can't give it to a charity because I don't want others going through this painful experience.

It works fine but yeah, I'm definetly not buying one of these again.

I'm gone for real :)

When you want to bin it,, I can your bin. For the dots being sharp is not enough reason not to like the device or not to donate it to a charity. I have saved for almost a year to buy a braille display which was deffective upon arrival. Returning it would cost me a fortune. So, behappy with what you have.

The past is a foreign country; they do things differently there!

Fight me. Lol.

I dunno, I actually like the Braille. It's rigid and... you know. I'm not such a big fan of how it refreshes though.

Some people really don't like it, others don't mind as much.  It's worth trying to get used to just reading it more lightly though, and maybe you can adjust the firmness?

@defender Nope! No customization here! What you get is what you're stuck with.

I have the regular 20 and I can't complain about it for the price that it was. I agree, there are definitely things to be desired, but it has been nice to have. Especially since I could have never afforded anything more expensive.

Hi.

@Maldalain, I can't be happy with what I have because it actually hurts my fingers after two minutes of reading. Plus. I can write so much faster on my computer/IPhone without it that it's not worth having for me.

I'm actually sending it back for a refund this week.

@Minionslayer, that's interesting. For me; it hurts my reading finger after two minutes or so of reading.

@defender, as Minionslayer said, what you see it what you get, if I could ajust the fermness, I'd probably keep it.

@Stevie-3 I get what you're saying, for me; it's usable but I can do much better without it.

Braille probably isn't for me, I don't mind reading it once in a while but I've decided I much prefer speech.

As someone who has a Canute 360, I have 9 lines of very sharp braille. I have gotten used to it by just lightening my touch. That type of braille isn't for everyone.

Hi.

@swigjr23, I think I just have heavy hands smile

I only use braille for reading long texts, not for interacting with the computer.  This way I can keep up my spelling and reading speed, while exercising my brain and not putting my ears under so many hours of strain.

2021-01-13 22:17:35

Hi.

@defender, yeah that's what I thought I'd do to but using my phone.

Oh well, i'm glad I can get a refund, even if it's not all the money back, I should at least get £600.

I didn't know braille displays had different sharpness. That's interesting. I find audio and speech to be much easier, but there are some things that I prefer braille for, math being one of them. I would use a braille display with my phone, but not really for my computer. Though I think more blind people should use braille displays because lots of blind people are terrible at spelling. I mean I'm bad, but I mean... some people are on an embarrassing level of bad. Of course if they aren't native English speakers I understand. But those who are... no excuse.

hi.

@Zarvox, yeah but they're so expencive and speech is just easier and much cheeper.

edit: Oh and yeah, some displays allow you to make the display softer or harder depending on what you like.

I just bought the Orbit Plus today, and I don't have a problem with sharper braille so I'll probably use it to read braille books from BARD mostly.
The last time I read brail was when I got a letter from the Social Security Administration after the cost of living increase, which was on the 30th I think.

Hi.

@Sam Smith, sorry but I really need the money for a new laptop so will be getting a refund. If you save up you can buy one if you get any kind of money each month.

I hate sharp braille. It's not really got anything to do with pressing less firmly, it's just ungodly levels of annoyance.

Hi.
It's very individuel if people like sharp Braille or not. I like it.

Best regards SLJ.

In my opinion, sharper braille is better.
DK why, but my fingers can't read braille that fast on paper, I know now, because the letters on paper are kind of too soft or something, and then I sometimes have to go backwards through a word because I didn't get some letters at first and that takes some time, as you can imagine. Btw, I can't use contracted braille, so that is a part of the issue I am sure.
Now, with the sharper braille on my note taker or however that thing is called in english, I can at least read more comfortably, if not faster by a very large degree, that's a plus for me.
Yeah, the things with the fingers hurting didn't happen to me, but I sometimes need to take breaks because the hand itself begins to hurt. And that's not really a problem, though. I mean, if our sighted pears get their eyes smarting by too much reading or whatever, then it's absolutely fare we should get the same with our fingers rofl.

I have a focus 40 blue from 2017 and that thing does have sharp barille. I do also happen to like sharp braille as well.

Hi.
I don't plan on getting this device since I have my Touch, but I'm just wondering. Does the Orbit Reader + refresh as loud as the original Orbit?
@23, What braille display do you have?
