Hi all!
ive just made a linux vm running ubuntu 15. it has about 1.24gigs of ram, and it is running fine. sure, there is some lag between key presses, but that is to be expected.

and?

2020-12-26 17:23:08

Wait why Ubuntu 15? If you mean 18 or 20....and why 1.2 gigs? I personally never use less than 4 gigs of RAM in a VM honestly

@2, just because I can.
@3, I onnly have fgb of ram I am thinking to upgrade. and I tryed 15 just because I don't know.

Remember to install VMWare Tools, please!

I don't get the attraction of running a VM on a system that can barely run the host OS.

Sounds like mere suicide, but to each their own I guess...

@Minionslayer, it's linux. Just remember that. I'm 99.5% sure there's no VM ware tools for that.

2020-12-26 20:55:55

There are. Though if you're having trouble with the official set, you can get open_vm_tools instead and it should do the job.

@9 I hope you said unsure instead of sure? because this exists

I don’t know what you guys are talking about, my PC does not go through any stress while running the VM, and yes, I have install VMware tools.

I think they were assuming you had a crappy computer? I dunno, they meant well I think. Most of the time I use at least 2GB with VM's, but your memory choice isn't that bad as they are saying.

2020-12-27 05:26:14

well, the ram could be better, but meh. I am making do with what I have.

why not install linux on a second partition?

Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking. We have a small problem. All four engines have stopped. We are doing our damnedest to get them going again. I trust you are not in too much distress.

@soren I really wouldn't recommend installing linux for a beginner, even, or especially, on a second partition. You can screw things up badly. Actually, maybe its just me coming from trying to dual boot MacOS and linux at the beginning of 2019 and epically failing at doing so.
Point is I had to reformat my whole drive lol.

I am going to try upgrading my ram today. the ram sticks we have at home are not the correct ones. so later, we will go buy some. I pray to god that the kind of ram stick that we need are in stock

Your CPU  is still not that good though. RAM isn't the only driving force in this quest to run a VM. Though it will most definitely help in other areas. If it won't exactly give the system a huge speed boost, at least it can stop swapping as much to disk, which will be good. Unless you really need audio, WSL can help you get to know the linux filesystem and general utilities.

I don't recommend dual booting. It's easy to mess up and when you do, you may have to reinstall windows as you could have inadvertently repartitioned. Then you'll have to edit your boot loader config to drop you into windows if nothing is pressed. While learning linux, it's probably best to be able to jump back and forth easily. But I wouldn't recommend  dual booting unless you've first done disk partitioning manually and successfully first.

Yes, I know about the ubuntu way of installing alongside windows, but that's such a kludgy mess that yeah, I'd stay away.

i'm not sure why you want linux anyways, I was trying to love linux but there is no reason to do so, I dool-booted it to sea it in realltime with out any vm limmitation and yeah, most things need extra efert, orca isnt really the best, most things are command line, there is nothing rong with that but just why, and when I got rid of it it fuckt up my ssd so badly I had to freacking re format the hole ssd

@18, never mind the CPU. it's what I have and I will make do with it. my mother says that she might get me a laptop with better specs in february.
@19, I just wanted to use it. windows is waaaaaaaaaaaaay better.

I wish I had a few RAM sticks. I have two empty RAM slots, according to LSHW, that need filling! I could have 32 GIGS ram! of course this is only an I7 with, I believe, 2.6 GHZ processor, but yeah that'd be good I suppose, but wouldn't really make the thing run faster necessarily.

Nah it wouldn't, but if you wanted to do virtualization, you could with a bit more head room.

well, you can always upgrade the motherboard...

Well this system has 8 gigs ram already, so I'm not starving for resources.
