I don't like it either, but since there's no other way to know, and I feel like most people aren't in the habit of checking their PMs, this is really the only way.

i guess that makes sence. it should realy ask you if you want the websight to send notifacations and it can then notify you about pms. or email them to you.

Cross does have a point though. I mean. Half the time people don't even check their PM's that it takes a topic or a post to actually get them to check it.

Flux is basically a more modern version of this, at least last I checked. It uses tables and I think that they are also topic headings in there also. I can't quite remember it, but I remember it being close to this. It also has a barrel of plug ins, such as PM notification, the ability to ignore the posts of players, automatic warning system, forum birthdays, a live chatroom, the ability to tweet your posts, etc. I think I'll be running a fresh install of it after dinner just to see what's new and to report back on some stuff.
