Yes, there is as of the latest updates of the web client. Open options, then channels and views, then channel global messages. Here, you can choose when those messages will be spoken. Activate the option speech, only when active and set it to never and they won't automatically be spoken. They will however be visible in the history if you ever want to check that.
As for getting started. first you must register an account on https://qcsalon.net
if you already have one, simply use any browser to open the website and click the play link, or connect  to the web client in the quick links section. It works as a web app, and is quite good for the amount of browsers it supports.

Hello. This is a limitation of Apple as far as I remember, that's how it was explained. However, you do not need to restart the app. Whenever the sounds stop playing, click on any item under the actions menu and the sounds should be restored. You should need to do this only once each time you log in.
