Hi, folks,

I'll keep this short, and apologize if there was a better topic I could've shoved this in.

I am a long-time skype user who hasn't monkeyed with it much since about a year ago.
I am using Jaws and Windows 10 on a notebook. I have no interest in putting skype on my iPhone.
Which version should I use, and are there versions of scripts I should download and install?
I am looking for an experience about as close to older skype as I can reasonably get, if that's still possible. I would welcome any and all constructive help here.

Thanks in advance.

As far as I'm aware, the Electron version (Skype 8) is superior to the UWP version (Skype for Windos 10) in terms of accessibility. The latest version of JAWS supports Skype 8, but I use Doug lee's scripts.

As you'll see from the guide there, it's not exactly like using Skype 7, but it's usable.

Draq is sadly correct. I'm not sure about jaws, but if you disable browse mode in NVDA it can really help with usability. You can quickly arrow through messages like you could in skype 7.
Skype 8 on the hole has a lot of issues as far as lag goes though this could be better on jaws, and it's still inferior to 7 IMO, but you'll get used to it after a while. If only 7 was still usable...

Since you're on 10, the universal app off the Microsoft store also works, and is my own personal go to over Skype 8, just because it actually has the option for split window view if you care about that. No idea how it works with JAWS though, sorry. NVDA full time.

I would be ready to help with any specific. That guide is a great resource and should answer most of the frequently asked questions. I recommend trying both Skype for Windows 10, the one built into your system, and the most often used electron version, the one you have to download. Skype for Windows 10 offers a few advantages if you can get used to some of it's weird things, like global hotkeys, which means that you can mute your microphone, end a call and so on without being focused on the Skype window. You lose the advantages of a web application though, such as browse mode or in the case of Jaws virtual cursor, which can sometimes help to obtain information quicker depending on the context. You are essentially combining 2 modes, in the case of NVDA focus and browse mode, and in the case of jaws virtual cursor and forms mode. With virtual cursor, you are using Skype as a web page, and navigating with arrow keys. This can be useful in cases like a long list of group members, since you can use your jaws key plus f to look for someone specific in the find dialog. In general, you will be spending most time with the virtual cursor off, and by default Jaws turns it off as soon as you focus Skype 8. Here, you can use it like a web app, with tab, arrow keys and other app specific shortcuts such as alt 1 to focus the list of recent chats, alt 2 for contacts and so on. You can toggle between these 2 modes with Jaws plus z.

Note that the split view mode is no longer exclusive to the Windows 10 app, it is available in the Electron app as well since a few versions.

Ah, that would be my error then. But thanks for the correction.

Hmm. I didn't think JAWS had any support for the UWP version. Doug has written scripts for it, but last I knew they haven't been updated in quite some time.

In spite of what guys on the FS site says, the UWP version is very good with JAWS too. I know because I use JAWS.

If you want to contact me, do not use the forum PM. I respond once a year or two, when I need to write a PM myself. I apologize for the inconvenience.

The skype that is in Windows 10 by default, for some reason, does not play sounds when I get messages, so I either have to check every few minutes, or I have to wait for my windows sound skeam to open and close a process really fast, which is quite unreliable.

For NVDA users, you can turn single letter navigation on/off (with out effecting status of browse/focus mode) by using the NVDA-Shift-Space toggle. It doesn't get much talk sadly, but that command is there.

Additionally, both versions of Skype work wonderfully with Microsoft's own screen reader, Narrator.

i use skype 8 too with dlees scripts. as for chats, use miranda with the skype web plugin installed, and you have no lags during opening chats etc. use skype only for calls.

I thought the miranda skype plugin died? It does still work? I personally tried the UWP version and with NVDA noticed it had some focus problems, would often just jump you who the hell knows where in the message history if you tabbed into it wrong while it was changing, and I didn't see a jump to last button. I'd imagine since JAWS likes to use it's webpage mode and automatic forms mode, Can you turn that off?, it would be a bit more of a pain than with NVDA, though I'd imagine doug's scripts combat that somewhat and add all kinds of useful hotkeys, which BTW skype also has a lot of hotkeys

yes, i tried the skype web plugin, and chats worked with it.

I use the version of Skype for Windows 10, both on my laptop and on my IPhone. The only real problem I have with it is that trying to add new contacts don't work. I go to add someone's username in, the screen reader and Skype both says they found the person I'm looking for, yet it won't let me actually get to the part where I can add them as a contact. It's totally frustrating.

most annoying part of this new skype, chatwise, is that I can't use the end key to jump to the latest message. THere's sometimes a jump to last message button, but that is unreliable. Also, for multi line messages, it just doesn't read them as well. It instead just strips out the new line characters, which often causes words to run together or punctuation marks to run into new words, making the reading sound rushed. Also, the lack of sound scheme customization is another big turnoff. But I guess it could be way worse. I would encourage people using skype to just migrate to discord for large skype groups. Screen reader and keyboard accessibility is no worse on discord than it is on skype, and you could even make a persuasive argument that it's better.

Referring to discord,

If on Windows, get the Canary builds. For the Macintosh, it works? Though ya have to wait for a moment for it to properly start. (Thanks to a friend of mine for the Mac confirmation.) There is a Linux client for desktops, though haven't tried any of those yet.

Both versions of the Discord mobile app are now accessible.

2020-01-06 21:53:05

Skype for windows works good if you turn off browse mode on NVDA, it actually functions similarly to the classic app, although no quite the same. Only reason i'm still on Skype is because a girl I speak to uses it.. lol.. Discord has gotten way, way way better. And even more than just groups, you can make your own servers centered around whatever the fuck you want. For some reason it doesn't seem to work in Ubuntu though I wonder if anyone would know about that? Discord and skype too. Going into the window Orca just cuts off and I can't do any navigation whatsoever.. But otherwise it's the tits! Besides the 8 mb file size limit if you're not a premium user but meh, whatever, at least they're not a product of a big corporation like MS

2020-01-06 22:11:37

See, the thing I don't care for when it comes to things like TeamTalk and Discord is that you have to manage all these servers and junk. Great for group chats I suppose, but not so great when all you want is an IM program. Skype may be a pain in the rear at times, but it's usable.

2020-01-06 22:17:06

you don't *have* to make a server, I personally make one because I do music and it's a great way to get everyone together and channels help make things organized. Bots can do a lot of automation for you as well. But you can do regular groups as well, just like Skype.

2020-01-06 22:58:48

Thanks for all the feedback, folks. Bearing in mind that I really only use NVDA when Jaws doesn't work, or for certain games/certain tasks, I would prefer to stick with Jaws and Skype, and that's why I said what I did in post 1. So I'm not so worried if something works badly with NVDA but well with Jaws because Jaws is my primary screenreader.

On a sidenote, anyone using Skype/discord with orca on Linux can help me determine why I can't do anything while in their windows?
