here is a link for the latest version of commentary screen reader for android. I really wish this screen reader could be put on the google play store for easier installation, updating and purchase options. maybe someone on here could manage to get it onto the play store? There is also a telegram commentary screen reader group for the telegram app and the link is:

enjoy the commentary screen reader. It makes android phones nice and fast and works with apps that talkback does not work with. commentary gets android accessibility right! you can even swipe through the keyboard like you can on iPhones.

thanks for the link, though last time I was reading translation into other languages besides Chinese appeared to be incomplete, is this still the case?

Is commentary translated in Italian too? Thanks!

How can i use my primary text to speech engine with it? i can't understand what the default engine is saying.

And, can it be used with Android 4.4.2?
Thanks

No Android 4.4.2 support I don't think. You really ought to get a new phone if you are actually running that full-time, as a lot of apps are pulling support for it. Even the Braillenote Touch moved up to Android Oreo. So I would not recommend holding onto that.

It's a very old phone which noone uses and I just happened to turn on Talkback and play with it. I use an iPhone as a primary device.

you can get a good nokia android phone with android 9 pie with update to android 10 for around $150 or so. The xiaomi phones such as xiaomi mi a2 and mi a3 are also very good phones that get the latest android updates.

I'm a little suspicious about the amount of permissions.
As soon as you open the app, it asks to allow 10 things which includes letting the app make phone calls, take pictures and record audio.

Though our eyes may fail, our ears prevail!
User Karma, every little helps

2019-09-15 17:52:55

the app is fine. I just allow all permissions and it works great! I also scanned it with several antivirus programs and everything check out.

A couple of things here.

1. You can in fact swipe through the keyboard with TalkBack, just as in iOS.

2. The screen reader needs access to all those permissions in order to get the information it uses to read, well, anything, so though it sounds invasive, it is as others have said not a problem. Scanning with Antivirus is a good practice all the same.

My opinions are my own. I try not to state them as facts and if I'm not sure about something, I do whatever research I can. I feel everyone should consider doing the same.

commentary, or csr, needs all those permissions because it has plugins that access your camera, location, and microphone for its voice assistant, language google translator, and image descripption features.

Is there a document explaining its gestures? They sound totally weird for a beginner.

2019-09-16 06:29:28

I'm kind of conflicted here, I'm seeing all these posts where people are raving about how good Commentary is, then a few weeks ago someone posts an audio clip where it clearly says your phone will be decrypted if you use this screen reader.

So which is it?

I'm mainly asking in case I decide to dabble with an android device in the future, since iPhones are getting to be too expensive.

I'm sure there's a difference between asking for permission to gain access to things, iOS does it all the time with location services, but to outright decrypt your phone?

2019-09-16 14:20:06

I am also conflicted. Not sure of being able to use it with other languages, no one has been clear on that. Just because I write and read English here does not mean its my primary, every day language. Also, not sure what the whole keyboard advantage type thing is.. or how even to use it, i just touch the letters, and slightly rise the finger when I find the one I want, with practice you can get faster, and autocorrection suggestions are at the left, center and right, above the keyboard when you want to use them, and also space bar autocorrects as well. Is there anything I am missing? how is commentary different? I also use voice dictation a lot and it works well for what I need to do, otherwise I just stick to voice notes or an external keyboard or use whatsapp web or other apps from the pc.
also, whats this with joining a group and so on... why can't there be a published article of some sort so that questions can be answered without repeating over and over and over the same thing...
and, who uses telegram anymore, its accessibility was pretty poor a year back or so if my memory doesn't fail me

Telegram on iOS is accessible. I haven't tested it on Android
