Hi, I have a pretty huge sound library. When I am looking for sounds, I open up file explorer, and press enter on sounds I want to check out to see if they're any good. I was wonder if there was a kind of file explorer that could auto play sounds as you navigated to them, to avoid the extra step of loading them up into the media player. Because then I also have to alt- tab back to the explorer window. I know that Aprone's thumbnail wavs can do that, but that only works for a single folder of sounds. Also, it is limited to Wav sounds, but I have wav, mp3 and ogg sound files that I would like to preview this way. Any suggestions?

I know that Studio Recorder (link) has this capability. It is also something like $200 for the full version. Try out the demo, it might be good enough for what you need.

This also seems ridiculously overkill. I don't know of any other applications that'll do this, though.

GoldWave's auto-preview does wonders. Once you hit preview, it'll autoplay sounds in any folder you enter.

My solution to this problem has just been to write a program for it. At first, I wound up copying it to the top directory I was interested in, then I remembered that it does let you enter an address, too.

http://www.sendspace.com/file/2v4n5n
(It uses custom_voice: http://www.sendspace.com/file/cjgwos ; but if you don't want to bother with that, I guess you can replace the custom_voice references with a tts_voice, and remove any calls to voice.options_menu.)

Hi Cae, I tried out your player. It seems to only play 1 sound at a time. Like I can't browse through a folder of sounds and play each one. The gold wave preview thing was the closest I've gotten to what I wanted. In the open sound dialog, after the cancel button, is a preview button. If you activate it, it will play the sound as you move down the list of sounds in the current folder so you can find the one you feel like opening.

You could press l to browse for sounds, and when browsing, you can press space to play the sound. It started out as a more one-at-a-time player, but I added the play-with-space option to the browser and never looked back.

If the goldwave preview is better, though, by all means use it. After all, mine only plays wavs and oggs.

Hi.
You can open up Winamp, press alt tab back to the sounds folder and then press enter on the sound you wanna play. The sound is being played in Winamp without switching the focus from the folder.

You can do similar with foobar: I have it configured to stay in the system tray, even when I press enter to play a new file.

BTW re: post 4, godwave is awesome.  I feel a game inspiration coming on.  Maybe I'll take a nap till it goes away.

I might be crazy, but didn't Aprone write a sort of sound-brosing application like this? I thought I remembered something to that effect from descriptions of various programs available on his website.
