Joseph,
One thing I did in my Harry Potter game was to have each object have the ability to make a sound.
As you passed by a door to a room that had a cat purring in it, the mono cat sound would have its volume be reduced to half.
If you opened the door, the door object would make a creaking door sound and allow you to pass through it but would also stop the cat sound. The full volume of the cat creature purring inside the room would then play.
If the cat ran out of the room, the cat sound would change to a meow and the cat purring sound on the door that was stopped would be removed.
As for creatures like cats and dogs, they have several sounds associated with them.
1. Stationary sound: purring, barking or breathing
2. Motion sound: running claws flying wings.
3. Startled sound: when they first detect you.
4. Hurt sound: when you attack them.
5. Attack sounds: when they attack you best if more than one and in stereo.
6. Death sound: If you kill them, including a cry and body thud.

To be honest.
I have no issue with all the stuff going on steam for those that use it.
The sighted definately use it.
Steam is a bit hit and miss with us blinkys though.
I have never had success at all either with creating an account without sight, and or running the client even with the right switches.
Valve even though we have used multiple petitions blogs and violent sweary rants and other such junk all over the internet just don't care.
We could sue them or I guess hack their systems and delete their hard drives.
But the point of inclusiveness for accessibility means that if we legally do make them do something they may not even bother or just do a little but not enough.
The biggest issue is the steam client itself, and bits of their website, most of which actually is not to shabby.
I brought something a little while ago from somewhere and I was told no you need to use a steam key.
I then said I am blind and can't use steam, give me back my money ass hole, and so they did and I was like well thats another product I just can't even attempt to play.
If its possible I'd like to buy dlc and packs, soundtracks, bundles, etc directly as well as on steam for those that can.
Neilsbauer games do this via a store previder and directly through steam and gog so its possible I know that.
If you are going to do it for sightlings, then you really must do it through steam, its what the sightlings like.
Though some of my friends really hate it, for my geeky hacker friends anyway we find steam a bit to ristrictive at some points, we also don't care that things can have multiple patches and use gegs and gegs of data especially for those that just don't have the data to spare at all.
Where possible we will buy physical distributions of things especially if it decreases download time etc.
So I wouldn't be mad if I had to buy physical downloads and or disk packs.
However, I'd really like to not have to do steam.
Because if that happens then I will never play it because valve chooses to suck!
THe steam interface also chooses to suck!
I could start another sweary rant on this forum right now I am so angry about it and that they don
't deem it necessary to care for all their gamers.
But I guess they don't and nothing much we can do so there we go.
I would also prefur not to have to run extra clients etc on my system with the game.
It just means another program that could be fully loaded with ransomware and in least case another window open but whatever.

2017-02-06 01:33:26

Ok...let's not let this conversation get sidetracked into a rant about the evils of steam, or anything like that. All that is relevant, as regards Out of Sight Games and "A Hero's Call", is that we are going to make the game available in as many, or as few, locations as we are able. You can rest assured that there will be accessible means of acquiring the game, as it would be kind of nonsensical for us to only offer it on a platform that may give blind gamers trouble. However we also aren't going to take other platforms off the table just because they may not be accessible, as ultimately the more platforms the game is offered on, the wider access people have to it in general, both within and outside the blind community. Much of the decision about how and where to publish the game will probably have more to do with the technical side of publishing, and all of that is still in the process of being figured out. We will keep everyone posted through the forum, and the KSC, as more information becomes concrete.

Agreed with Joseph. I didn't suggest Steam to start a debate about its merits and flaws, just as a possible revenue platform for them to consider come implementation and distribution time.

Honestly, I think we're getting a bit too bogged down with the nitty gritty of how we want AHC to be, suggesting things before we even know what Out Of Sight has in mind for the project! We're like a bunch of diners at a restaurant who just can't trust the chef, and so keep shouting into the kitchen, suggesting things for him to do with our food. Add a dash of oregano. Sprinkle on a bit of thyme. Braze the meat gently, and then saute it with wine and rosemary. Serve the dish on a bed of white rice. Lets let the developers do their thing, and then we the consumers can do our criticism thing that we're all so fond of.

Well said, Kai. At tne end of the day, the developers will make it what they will... and from what I've seen, I'll be pleased with the result, whatever it turns out to be!

totally agree assault_freak

2017-02-06 15:03:19

Kai - I literally laughed at loud at your analogy, which I think described the situation perfectly. But here's what I see about the situation... The diners in the restaurant are starving. Not only that, but they've been watching Food Network for years, without getting to eat anything but McDonald's, while all their friends talk about their gourmet dinners. Now they can hear the chef starting to make a meal for them, and they're so hungry, and so excited, and so tired of waiting that they just have to do something. I totally get that. I do think that some areas of conversation are more beneficial than others, but I'm happy to see so much excitement and enthusiasm, wherever it may be directed.

Just to keep you all updated, we've sent a few more dialogue scripts out and are still going through callbacks to finalize the cast. In the meantime, we've been working hard to figure out some audio issues with our HRTF library which is resulting in some significant quality loss in our voice acted dialogue, but I think we're on the right path now. In the process, this has also led us to doing some more thinking about how we can take advantage of Dolby 5.1 and 7.1 surround systems, and how to allow the player to switch between setups for headphones, stereo speakers, and surround speakers. Also, our sound designer recently found a deal on some killer sound packs, and he's already putting them to good use. So in terms of both technical sound design and foley/sound contents, progress continues to be made.

2017-02-06 15:49:03

very good news

2017-02-06 17:04:31

Joseph,
Well the diner's are still hungry and the chef has run out to Kick start the meal but has to first get some better gourmet food, but it will take five months to collect the ingredients and cook it.
Maybe the chef should come out of the kitchen with a few appetizers from time to time to keep the diner's happy!

Hey Joseph, consider giving these libraries and resources a look. They're resources I use myself. Now, I'll be honest, some of the libraries here are slightly expensive, but they're all delivered in very high fidelity, letting your sound designer warp and stretch them to his heart's desire.

  • Primarily, I like ASoundEffect, as they're a font of indepent sound recordists. Lots of foley, footsteps, and various other elements to be gotten here, including variety packages.

  • A fantastic library (designed by Epic Stock Media) for fantasy themed games, sold through ASoundEffect, is Ancient Game. If you plan to get this library, though, consider the next link I'm going to show first, as its included in that bundle.

  • The Epic Arsenal from Epic Stock Media contains a lot of lsfx libraries (One of which includes the aforementioned Ancient Game library) at a very reasonable $219.

Again, just some links to help you guys out in the search for libraries. I really like that Epic Arsenal bundle, as it provides you with tons of media that can be used in future titles as well.

As am I. As I may have said this is exactly the sort of game I've been hoping for ever since I discovered audio games fourteen years ago now. I definitely feel we need more RPG's.

But wait, what's that? A transport! Saved am I! Hark, over here! Hey nonny non, please help!

Phil - But there isn't a separate chef to work on appetizers, which means any time the chef spends making appetizers pushes back the delivery time of the meal by that same amount of time. In a restaurant, you spend more time eating an appetizer than the chef takes cooking it (in theory). But in this case, any time we spend on something is time taken away from working toward release. Not saying that we won't do any demo videos or the like as it becomes appropriate, but just pointing out that our priority has got to be release, especially since we're such a small team with such limited time to begin with.

Kai: Thanks very much for the resources - I have passed them along!

Flame_alchemist: All I know is that KS said it should take two weeks to process the payments. I don't know at what point in that two weeks your money will actually be withdrawn.

I' probably going to bet bitched at to high heaven for this, but someone has to say it. This game seeks to bring together the sighted and blind gaming communities. Outside of here, sighted people do not call themselves sightlings, sighties, all-seeing ones, watchers or any other stupid terms. At best, a sighted gamer who stumbled on a post littered with words like blinks, blindies or sightlings is probably going to be confused but shrug it off. More likely though, they'll think the entire thing is wierd, that all blind gamers think of them as a sightling, a term that sounds mildly insulting if you read it outloud and avoid these wierdos with there wierd terms for things and their strange nack of righting smileys as full words. Now that that's out the way, joseph said He'll be pushing the envelope, That's good enough for me! I'll leave the chef alone now. tongue

Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right.

Joseph,
Your sound chef, Drew Becker   already served us some tasty appetizers,

and on YouTube:

There are sound describer functions in some audio games,
describing a sound effect, then playing it.
This could be done as an mp3 maybe with your game music playing quietly in the background so the sounds can't be bitten off, tasted, and spit into another game.

2017-02-07 06:28:18

I've backed AHC with reward 7. I really can't wait!!! The SoundClloud links on Drew's page mentioned above no longer are available. I'd love to hear them.
