I got this message from A Hero's Call email list, waited for Joseph Westhouse
to post it but he might be busy.
Project Update #10: A Hero's Call - An Accessible Fantasy
Game For Everyone

Tonight, something amazing happened. Two representatives from Out of Sight Games stood up at the IGF Awards to be honored as one of the ID@Xbox Gaming for Everyone Awards. This award is offered to developers who are using their games to speak for an underrepresented population. We're absolutely humbled, honored, and amazed to have been selected, and to have been given this opportunity to advance the conversation of accessibility in gaming. We also owe a huge thank you to those of you who backed this campaign, as it was directly through the Kickstarter campaign that we came to the attention of ID@Xbox to begin with.

So, what's next? Tomorrow, we'll be showing off the game at Microsoft's booth at GDC, and talking with anyone who wants to know more. We're so grateful to have this opportunity to share what we're doing, and to get people thinking about the needs of blind gamers, and the opportunities available for creating games that a diverse range of gamers can enjoy together. And then after GDC, it's back to work finishing the project, and pushing towards a release that will make good on all of the faith that has been placed in us.

Hey everyone, thank you so much for the excitement and congratulations. Phil, thanks for posting—yes, we've all been pretty busy ^_^ It was an incredible week, and a tremendous honor, and has opened up so many opportunities for us, not to mention just allowing us to make some really incredible connections. And let me tell you guys, the feel around game accessibility at this year's GDC is unreal. See my post on Ian Hamilton's thread for my full thoughts (short version: don't get too excited, but get very excited). Talked to so many incredible folks, particularly from Microsoft simply because those are the ones who brought us to GDC for the award, and let me tell you we are not without allies. I know there are plenty of people within the machine who would like nothing more than to see high-quality accessible content available on the mainstream platforms, and even better, for disabled gamers of all varieties to be able to enjoy the same titles as their able-bodied peers. So excited to be a part of that process with "A Hero's Call" and future titles from Out of Sight Games, and so honored to be able to.

2017-03-06 17:18:05

I know you might not be able to respond properly to this, or you might be under NVDA or something, but, could we, possibly, see a hero's call come to the xbox one, not at launch, but possibly some time in the future, or, if not a hero's call, a future project from out of sight?

2017-03-06 18:32:36

That would be fantastic, especially now when the TTS feature in games is possible. big_smile

So, short answer: if we can overcome some technical hurdles that we're facing, there is the possibility that we could publish "A Hero's Call" on Xbox. However, those technical challenges are pretty significant, and there's no guarantee either way. Either way, we will also be pursuing the possibility of releasing future opportunities on Xbox—it's definitely our hope that someday you'll be able to play one of our games on a console.

Of course, bear in mind that the certification process to publish on a platform like Xbox or Windows is a major step, which developers who just self-publish and self-distribute don't have to deal with. What that means is that if we do release as a Windows 10 and/or Xbox app, I imagine the release would be later than currently anticipated. Of course it would open up a huge market and would be a pretty big milestone for accessible gaming, but it's still something to bear in mind.

Hi.
You know, when you start publishing that game on the steam market, it's already quite the big opportunity to see how the general gamer comunity will receive your game, when this turns out great, you still have the possibility to jump onto the Playstation or xBox market.
Greetings Moritz.

Hey guys,

Sorry I've been quiet—last couple weeks, life has kept me pretty busy. (Side note: it is really hard to be productive as a game developer when everyone on the team has a day job, and some of us are doing graduate school as well. Yes.)

Anyway, that's a really good point about releasing on one market and then pursuing a possible, later release on another platform. It's actually something I had been thinking about recently, as well.

Hello.
Well I've been away from the forum for a while so I just took a look at this it sounds incredible! If it's not too much trouble could somebody post the demo recordings of a hero's call? I know their around but I don't want to go through pages and pages trying to hunt them all down.
I'm very happy to see that something cool is coming! That's awesome Ian Reed is working on this I still love tactical battle! I thought he just vanished, or had become one of those very cool, very mysterious developers like ghorthalon, aprone, or tward lol! I'm excited I can't wait to get my hands on a copy when it comes out! Btw, love the name out of sight games, it has a nice ring to it!

Someone requested the links for the recordings, and here they are. I think most of the links still works. I'm sorry for the weird way of posting this, but I am too lazy to find all the links again. smile

@Joseph, just for your information:
I have taken the time to write a very long mail in danish to the blind community here in Denmark who don't speak english, explaining a lot about the game and RPG games in generel.
I have linked to the Kickstarter project, your website, the original topic here on the forum, this Kickstarter topic and all the audio demos. So the project has been shared to a lot of people, and some of them are already as much excited as I am for the project... big_smile
I have a suggestion: Instead of sending the collecter's edition on cd or dvd, you should consider sending it on a USB thumb drive instead. Most laptops don't even have a dvd drive, and a thumb drive is much more up to date. To protect the drive, you can burn an iso to the drive, so people can't delete the data from it. I would personally get the collecter's edition if you choose a USB thumb drive instead of the cd or dvd.
Oh by the way, I'm so proud to see what you got out of my suggestion regarding the Braille imbosser. A tactile cover  . I look very much forward to see this...
Keep up the fantastic job guys.

Best regards SLJ.

I was hesitant to ask but, does that mean that the progress on the game is slow? Will the release date be delayed?

Hello.
@Slj, thanks for the recordings that made it a lot easier for me!
@Joseph Westhouse, I've listened to the demos I think you guys have a great development team. I want to thank you for all these features that are in a hero's call! I haven't played mainstream games much since I'm totally blind but I do like to listen to videos where people played them. Something I've been thinking to myself for years is that we really need to push the audiogames genre forward. I'm happy to say that this is happening but very, very slowly. I think a hero's call is exactly what we need to shake things up! I like the replay feature after fights it's like listening to an action movie. And the music is great it sounds like something you would hear in game of thrones! I'm curious about something, I read a little bit of the introducing out of sight games topic where it said you guys were building a game engine to make a hero's call did you ever get that done and what is it like? You don't have to tell me of course I'm just always curious about things like this.
@Muhammad, I don't think he meant the game is being delayed, I think he just meant that everyone on the team is busy with work, school, things like that, so progress has slowed somewhat. He didn't say anything about stopping a hero's call.

Guitarman: I'm glad Ian is working on this project too, haha. And if you ask me, he is definitely very cool, though maybe not so mysterious.

Muhammad: At this point, I can't say much about release date. Please bear in mind that a release date was never actually officially announced—just an estimated date of delivery for the KSC rewards, which is just that—an estimate. I can say that progress is slower than we'd like, but I can't say at this point if it's slow enough that it's going to affect our estimated release. We're definitely figuring out the timetable as we go.

447, it's been what, 2 weeks? It makes me chuckle when I see a question like this. the Devs want to release the game probably more then anyone here, and the time spent writing the posts saying "we are still working on it" could be spent on coding, checking for errors in the story, etc. we all are waiting on the game, trust me on it.
I found that the best thing to do is to distract myself. Like reading? Check out Hounded by  Kevin Hearn. The iron Druid. That should keep you busy for a couple of months.

2017-03-30 18:47:21

Not trying to be an ass, but it's not really been a while... Joeseph's last post was on March 22, post 447 which is saying it's been a while is on March 30th. That's only 8 days. Remember, the game wasn't even slated for release until June, and I'm sure they'd say something of their own accord if delays were expected.

Spill chuck you spots!

Lol Kai, I was meaning that it's been a while and we didn't see any update or something. Wasn't talking about posts big_smile but you're right guys. Got to be more patient xd.
