I have a released my new text Adventure game: The Inheritance.

It is available currently for Windows PC (all versions). It is screen reader friendly and when the game starts specifically asks if the user wishes to be in blind compatibility mode.

There is a free demo of the game available as well as more information about the game at
http://www.msadams.com/inorder.htm

I am also happy to answer questions about the game on this thread.

Hi Scot, great to have you on the forum and thanks for the inclusion of the blind compatibility mode. i'll certainly look the game over, though i do confess my previous experiences with your old games from the 80's such as adventureland were somewhat confusing big_smile.

Hi,
Wow, it's the real? scot adams?
I've heard quite a lot about your games. Unfortunately I struggled with puzzles and such, but I certainl gave a few of them a go and liked what I could accomplish, liked the writing and such.
Nice to see you on the forum.
Just out of curiosity, have you given any of the choice of games a try? I'm finding them a bit easier than the text adventure style stuff, however I'll give the INheritence demo a try.

2013-04-01 14:17:36

Aaron and Dark, Many thanks for your kind welcome.

Yes I am the Scott Adams who in 1978 published the first home computer adventure game and ran Advenutre International for 8 years.

I am actually still around! At least for now wink

Try the Inheritance demo and see if it is something you like or not.

It has a 5 stage help system and is designed so the player can never loose. I consider it the best of all my games.

2013-04-01 14:50:33

I'll be interested to give it a try. your games were some of the first if titles I played in 2002 when I first realized a computer could be used to actually do fun things.

i will confess I haven't played much if lately, and like Aaron have very much migrated to gamebooks or games like Eamon deluxe with a far limited parza, since I got rather sick of five out of six games I tried ending in a guess the verb situation, being told "I don't know how to put" or having some completely illogical puzzle, though i admit this might be my lack of patience or ability with lateral thinking big_smile.

I am however interested to try a modern if title, especially one with as comprehensive a help system as you mention inheritance having.

As you will notice, this website has a database of accessible games.  We don't usually give individual pages to if titles, because there are so many hobbyist works of if available it's easier just to create entries for the various interpreters such as winfrotz and add links to directories of games in appropriate format.

However, we do make exceptions and do individual entries for some if titles, such as those with full rpg mechanics (there being few accessible rpgs), or for commercial stand alone games (especially those with full sfx).

So, The Inheritance will likely be getting an entry. Do any of your other games available on your site also work in a similar stand alone way with sfx?

The previous games of yours I tried were convertions into zcode I played with winfrotz, and obviously none had sfx much less a help system, but if you have updated stand alone versions or new titles we'd be interested to know.

Hi Dark,

Many thanks for offering to place my game in a seperate entry in your database.

I currently only sell one other game: Return To Pirate's Island 2. It uses the same engine as The Inheritance and supports screen readers as well. Like the Inheritance it also contains sound effects and voice acting. There currently is no demo for this game.

My new games are all written using my own properitary engine. I call it SAGA which is an acronymn of Scott Adams Grand Adventures.

Note that when the games are placed in screen reader mode the sound effects are turned off to prevent any conflicts with the screen reader. The sound effects though can be toggled on and off if the user wishes. The sound effects can be totally turned off and the game played succesfully without them. Tthey are only there to add atmosphere to the game.

I have not converted any of my classic games to this engine and currently have no plans to do so. Fans have converted my classic games to many other formats over the years. I plan to leave that body of work as it is.

The Inheritance is available both as a digital download and as a physical package.Realistically I do not expect any of my blind fans to find much use of the physical package. But if interested there is a special limited gold physicall package that includes both SAGA games in one package.

Note if people play the demo of the Inheritance and enjoy it the full version (digital or physical) will allow them to pick up their adventure where they left off.

My suggestion is to play the demo for an hour and then stop and walk away from it. If you find yourself thinking about the game while not playing it then the full game will most likely be fun for you as well.

Happy Adventuring,
Scott Adams

I'm on a forum thread. obvious exits: back. visible items: the real Scott Adams says 'bring feedback here'.
Lol hi Scott. I am a big fan, as you can tell. I see you've traded in the ol' Level ii BASIC for something more... Modern? Way 2 go!

hi, I can say this is an exelent text adventure game, with a sound effect make me like this game is a real adventure game!
but I have a problem.
1. after I examin the lock, the ground, open the mailbox, get the front cover of the mailbox, how do i dig the cover of the mailbox to open the gate?
2. after I wring out the blanket on the sink, take the shower, and what should I do to sleep? it says there is no spesific solution on that. it happens when I enter the bed.

going in to the wilds, collecting pokedex, and capturing them are my kind of thing,
training them, making them evolve, and generally making them stronger is my ultimate goal,
fighting other manamon tamers, winning the tournament, and fighting octoros are what these manamons like to do,
and ultimately, I become the master of mana!

Hi Scot.

As to sound effects, usually it's quite possible to play games with sound because most screen readers are quite able to alter volume of the voice independently of the main volume in windows, so that shouldn't be a problem, indeed that is one of the things that will make your games stand out.

2013-04-01 19:23:28

Thanks Dark for the feedback.

Blind compability mode sets two seperate options in the game's option menu. It makes the input and outputs align in a single window so the screen reader can easily read it. It then sets the suppress all sound effects option

So a user can turn the sound effects back on if they so choose.

I will be interested to know how folks play the game and what settings works best for them..

Hi Scott.

Thanks much for posting about your new game here on the forum. Sounds really exciting.
Sound effects and voice acting in a text based game sounds really cool. I'll give the demo version a try.
I have a suggestion which might be hard to code, but here goes: It would be awesome if your future games is being made for Mac, IOS and android. There should be a cloud sync feature which let you play on your computer, and then continue where you left off on your iPhone or tablet on the go. I assume your new text adventure is really long when it costs money, which means it would take a while to complete.
I like text adventures a lot. For me, they are great to train my english because english isn't my standard language. So doing strange and complex puzzles in english does also train the language for me. that's something I just realized after I completed a pretty complex puzzle text adventure on my iPhone.

Best regards SLJ.

I'll check it out, chiefe.
and I hope it will also be available for the android soon!

I would like to have an Android version as well. I suspect it will be the next thing I work on after the Apple versions.

2013-04-02 17:33:11

may be you can also add a sound effect boath on apple and android?

Yes I would put in sounds in them as well. By the way if you are playing the game in blind mode try the following. On the options menu unselect "Suppress all sounds" and then select "Sound Effects"

The game will have shut off sound effects in blind mode.

2013-04-03 08:47:47

Hi.
I haven't had time to play the demo yet, but I have a small question: Does the game have any kind of replay value, unlockables and trophies? Would there be any reason for completing the game twice and are there any hidden secrets to come back to?

Best regards SLJ.

The game has three easter eggs in it. One is easy to find, the second a bit harder and the third a bit of a head scratcher. The demo shold provide from 2 to 4 hours of play time assuming you don't use the help system. There is one easter egg in the demo.

Hi:

Just as a heads up for those of you using NVDA, the game actually plays better *without* blind compatibility mode, in my opinion.  To get the best experience, at least in my testing with the demo, do the following:

Under the options menu:
1.  Uncheck suppress all sounds.
2.  Check sound effects.
3.  Check input on bottom - output classic

Now, whenever you want to read game output, press control tab. To type a command, press control tab again to get back to the input window.  For whatever reason, control tabbing will put you back at the top of the output window each time, but home, end, page up, and page down all work as expected.  If you want to have a quick look at the last output, the NVDA review keys also work as expected.

I like this much better, as my typing isn't mixed randomly in with the game text.

Thanks for the tips on formating the game Fasfinge. I will modify the game information to include your tips.

What is the NVDA? Is that the full name or an abbreviation?

Anyone else have a different setup that works well for them?
