In the wake of recent events, i’ve begun to ask myself a question. Why is the number of posts required to obtain a custom rank so high?

Try something. Start going through the forum. Look at user post counts. You will probably find that the number of people with a post count of over 10,000 is minuscule. There are some who have been on this forum for over 10 years, and they are not even half way to the 10,000 mark. Winning a custom rank is not dependent upon how much time you have spent on this forum, or how much you may have contributed. It’s purely dependent upon the number 10,000, with the exception of those who won custom ranks during the rank change a couple of years ago.

Are there any who think that the post count should be decreased? I’ve created a poll, so you can vote on this if you wish.

I would rather listen to someone who can actually play the harmonica than someone who somehow managed to lose seven of them. Me, 2019.

5K is a good amount of posts.

Here's what I think. You can get a custom title at 5000 posts if you wish, or let your post count climb to 10000, get the ranks associated with those post numbers, and get it then or at any point between 5000 and 10000

10k is good, but I agree with at3

Additionally, if a mod/admin feels you have contributed toward the community they might reward you with a custom title to showcase it, on top of your reputation, even if you haven't reached 5k.

When life gives you oranges, demand lemons since everyone else is obviously getting them.

I'll never get to either 10 or 5 k, but sure, we can lower it. As long as there is a function in place for admins to restrict someone's title changing if they put something offensive in there.

Then again, if someone reaches 5000 posts, they have likely already figured how not to be dumb.

I'm not even sure what I would put as my custom rank if I had the chance. "Sorry for the inconvenience!", probably.

Yes, I definitely left the forum. Mhm. Why would you have any doubt?

@Nocturninja, possibly if you've got more than 200 karma you can get a custom rank as well. aiting for mods to check this out

The funny thing is, I had no idea there was even a way to get a custom rank unless you were a moderator or something. There's nothing about it in the FAQ or anything.

I thought there was but when I went back, I didn’t see any thing.

There is.  Believe me there is.  It's just not commonplace because, as this topic clearly points out, there's very few people who have 10k posts.

I also believe that 10k is a bit high. I've been on this forum for 10 years and still don't have anywhere near 10k posts.

Actually for the record, the custom rank at ten k was more because we ran out of rank name ideas at that point than any specific planned reward system, and even with that, people who get to ten K would still need to tell admins their custom rank and have it set I believe.

this board has more in built ranks than most on the internet, usually ranks are just something like newby below 25 posts, junior member below 500 and senior member above 500 and there people stay forever.

5k would be fair enough I think, plus as I said, I still like the idea of more custom rank competitions.

I don't like the idea of rank as a karma reward though.

Our souls with high music ringing; O men! It must ever be
That we dwell in our dreaming and singing, A little apart from ye. (Arthur O'Shaughnessy 1873.)

Yeah, I don't know if the carma should be a reward, but if people want I wouldn't be against it.
Yeah, 5 k wouldn't be bad, but you could still go through the ones that are above 5 k now if you don't want them.

If people didn't abuse karma, I would say use that for your metric. But they do, so it wouldn't mean much. Number of posts could just mean you post nonsense but not enough to break the rules. It doesn't necessarily mean you've earned anything. Also, yeah 10K is quite a milestone, I'm over 5K now and I post quite a lot.

@15 I agree. Thus, when it comes down to it, there is no real way to judge who is worthy of a custom rank. but if we’re going to go by post number, we may as well lower it because as you said, it’s a giant mile stone.

2020-06-22 17:24:39

Personally, I don’t see why we should do this. It’s not like ranks really matter.

2020-06-22 18:49:16 (edited by Pineapple Pizza 2020-06-22 18:54:58)

Perhaps, but A custom rank would be cool to have, and 10,000 posts is just ridiculous. I don’t see why not. I do wonder if such a thing is even adjustable without the webmasters though. Probably.

@An Idiot, its forum software, not website software. The mods only have to go to someone's profile, then just enter the rank the person asked for. Hell. If they wanted, a mod can also change passwords and other things about users, so yes they can do it without the admins. There are a good bit of things they can do without the admins, but alas. None of the mods have posted on here.
