...And people can try to convince me why they think this way.

Especially the very same people who have been giving the mod team hell with endless accusations and drama, claiming the mods just ban anyone who don't agree with them. Ironically still posting while not banned under an authoritarian dictatorship or something that they claim.

Trust me, there are far worse online moderation communities on Reddit and Discord which are authoritarian dictatorships who ban users for not agreeing with them. Or endless online sexual harassment, or many other fun problems.

The mod team has taken steps to be a lot more transparaent, and in an easy to read format that's all compiled in the disciplinary posts topic, which links people to topics that had said violation to know how a user got their violation or ban.

No but seriously, convince me how audiogames.net is somehow as bad as the worst community wastelands on Discord? Surely there's plenty that can still be done to improve user/mod transparency and relations, but I really don't see the gloom and doom people claim.

...And yes I used an intentionally click-baity title to drag people here, why do you ask?

I mean, the idea is to see what the actual complaints are, and determining if they are an actual threat to the community of this forum, or people just disagreeing with minor differences in opinion.

Personally, I feel like the game discussion/new topics sections should not stray off topic, like how that bloodbath topic ended up being (and yes that includes zapping me and a mod or two), but that's not site ending problems of grand proportions.

Interested to see if any of them actually post here, with valid and well thought out responses. While I don't agree with every decision and action the mods and admins take, that's fine. It's not my community, and if it was really that bad, why keep posting?

One of my problems with all the mods is that they have letters in their names, which we all know really means they're absolute dictators.  I mean, we all know that every dictator's name started with a letter, ended with a letter, and had letters throughout the rest, including the middle of their names.
Another problem I have with them is that they breathe.  Seriously, have you ever seen anything that didn't breathe be dictatorial?  Once upon a time when things breathed not I bet there was a mass of peace that reigned supreme in nothing-nothing land...
Oh, and another problem?  For the love of all why do they even have to post MODERATION! Like it means something!  I mean anyone who posts the word MODERATION?  All they're doing is like showing off their powertrip desires and a need to clamp down on people!  You should never post the word MODERATION!  EVER!  And for that matter, you should never have the word moderator atatched to your existence!
Ok ok, I really couldn't resist... I do hope this discussion takes off in a productive fashion.

I mean, my opinion is that the mod team has been improving over the year. We're definitely in a better place then last year. I would actually like to publically commend Jayde for showing some growth. While I think he still has some things to improve on, I am glad to see him show some qualities that I would associate with a sober and fair minded leader. Again, he's not perfect, but growth is growth. As for the latest controversy on the fire, it's not too terrible. At least the updates got done in the end, even if it wasn't reminded in the most professional way. I thank Cartertemm for pushing past the unproffessional reminder, and doing his duty without snark. Even actually wrote the context to his ruling complete with links. A fairly solid post. Oh, and while I do realize Nocturnus is not a mod, his snark of a veteran mod is on point as always. LOL!!!  I always enjoy reading your posts, man. I'm sorry I'm not the target audience. I'm afraid the title had the opposite effect, and drew in those of  us who came to read an opposing opinion. LOL!!! I'm also curious why people think these actions are more ergant. I realize no one wants a repeat of last year's incident, but we should also be fair minded if we don't want to repeat those issues. No point in burning a system that could be fixed. I'm curious what people want. If they were more fast paced and harsh on their rulings, the mods could make terribly careless mistakes. If they took to long, though, it seems that people are way too quick to jump on them. I think if I had a preference, I'd rather them take more time and rule after a good discussion. It's slow, but it reduces the risk of careless mistakes.

Right, I'm starting to think that might be the case for the type of people actually clicking onto this topic. For the time being, most of the complaints are disjointed and all over the place. Was hoping this served as a central spot to compose any responses.

In my experience, most (although not all) such complaints of dictatorship, preferential treatment, prejudice and the like are made by opportunists attempting to capitalize on moments of unrest.

Incidentally, I do not breathe. Air simply enters me by way of my nose and then expels itself from my respiratory system by way of my mouth. The muscular action of my diaphragm is entirely coincidental, and unrelated to the whim of the air which chooses to make its way through my body. As such, I am not guilty of breathing and should not be labelled as dictatorial for this reason alone.

Though it's as you say, Jayde. Most. Not all. I think assuming motive before the individual has a chance to make their argument is not always a good idea. We don't want to even subconsciously dismiss their argument before they have a chance to make it if we can help it. That's how we miss valuable criticism. Now, don't get me wrong, it's hard to do. Especially if you have any kind of emotional attachment to the situation. That's partly why even lawyers hire lawyers to work their cases that they themselves are involved in. Emotional attachment makes a truly clean argument next to impossible. Correct me if I had misinterpreted your comment, though. That's always possible for me. LOL!!!

Essentially, I'm commenting on what has come before, not on those who might make valid criticism here.
Going through the forum over the last year or so will bring up the same ten or twelve users who cry foul in similar ways and at similar times, with (in most cases, at least) similar lack of proof.

Hmm. In any case, I think it's a sad state of affairs when even those who you wouldn't normally find defending the Moderation panel defending the moderation panel. I have my own theories as to why things are the way they are, but I think I shall put them aside. I most certainly would like to hear why these are thought to be reasonable complaints. After all, just because a voice is a minority doesn't make it wrong. There might be a legitimate concern that the rest of us aren't thinking about. Not likely, considering how things seem, but even that 0.1% doubt seems worth satisfying. I just hope they weigh in. It has been only about less than 48 hours, though, so we've got plenty of time. I look forward to seeing what comes of it.

Post 8 is perfectly understandable even to a non native english speaker (who you have previously crittisised for having worse english than you which btw is BS) before. He may use big words which your lack of english skills may prevent you from understanding, but that doesn't invalidate anything he says and doesn't instantly cast doubt on everything he does.

2020-01-23 15:13:26

I've checked post 8 and I can also understand it. respiratory system being, well, the system that keeps our bodies alive and does feature our lungs, and I think the heart, although it's been a while since I've heard about it, this was back in school after all, and I don't remember everything.
In regards to us as a panel, I agree we've grown over the last year, safe to say some of us have made mistakes including me, and sometimes, there's been clashes, but we now discuss things to make sure there's a compromise and agreement before acting.
However, there is a bit more. For instance, Pitermach recently got made a database editor, but neither me or him can do anything, the link to edit the database has seemingly vanished, and all Dark can do is contact Sanda and hope. He (Dark) can still edit, and I know he wants to try to get us back on board, and I'd be happy to. I'm just stuck waiting again.
One thing I'd love to do although I don't exactly know where to start, but I'm wondering if any of the staff would be interested in writing or helping with, perhaps, some retrospecives. Yes, it's not a moderator thing, but I do wonder if it might have a better connection with the community. I need to find out if there are any game anniversaries this year, although that's getting a bit off topic for this particular thread.

2020-01-23 16:20:48

@ 12 If I may, is your issue here that Jayde uses complex language? If I am understanding right, then just ask him to simplify something if you do not understand it. That might save you some trouble. Either in PM or on the thread if it is thread relevant. That would be my thoughts, anyways. Actually, that goes for anyone. This isn't the first time I've seen that issue raised about Jayde.

It's also fair to say that post 8 is something of a joke. The first part is true enough, but I consciously chose to write that way in that post because I wanted to make the silly "I don't breathe" joke in a way that would take a second to parse.
Respiratory system is breathing. Circulatory system is blood.

I would think that if someone had difficulty with someone using big words (which is quite common, mind, not everything can be fully explained with simple terminology) they would either: (1) look it up on Wikipedia or dictionary, (2) go ask someone else (i.e. a teacher or professor), or (3) ask about the used terminology to get the fullest depth of understanding possible. I had no problem understanding post 8, personally, and got the joke (its easy to see Jaydes jokes once you understand him). Also: love the topic title. smile
Personally I agree with 8; people are just taking every opportunity to try and destroy the mods/admins positions, reputation or character, in any means possible. Whether they have proof or not is pretty much irrelevent to these naysayers; they'll do it irrespective of whether its actually true. This may be a dim POV to take, but I'm getting fed up with it all the same. If these naysayers have a legitimate complaint/argument they can create without throwing in nonsensical insinuations and attacks, then I'll be willing to listen. But thus far I haven't seen anything like that happening, and doubt it will.

@Jayde thank you for your explanation; the whole of this world finally makes sense to me!  I can finally tell people that I do not spend money; I acquire goods through various monitary transactions, and any units of market calculated financial value that enter or leave my bank account are entirely coincidental.  I can never be accused of anything akin  to wasting money if I don't even spend it, right?

The joke was based off someone's earlier post about letters and breathing. With a bit of Googling on the unknown words, it makes perfect sense. I know what it meant and found it chuckle worthy.

Though seriously, Deathstar, you're quite vocal about this and all you had to point out was a single post that was a joke. Unfortunately, with an English dominated website, you're going to be encountering tons of people with varying levels of vocabulary. Luckily we haven't had a person only speak in SAT level. You know how I knoww Jayd, is an evil, moniacal, ruthless,  mad,  evil dictator? Because, his pannel, are all afraid of him. Nocturnus, has mentioned that, Jayd, is evil! He clones mods, mind controls them, and rules with an iron fist!  Also, Jayd, doesnt wear socks! What kind of evil person doesn't wear socks!

Now, to a more serious note, Jayd, rose to power very simularly to fascist dictators in the 1930's. Just like Hitler, Mussolini, or like the Bulshivicks in the 20's. The forum was in chaos, But one major difference, unlike the dictators I mentioned, Jayd was not liked. Now, I was a member then, but I wasn't very active. I lost my password, and I started to really contribute in July. From my time, I actually found Jayd to be a great mod. I still do.  Now, While I was banned, in December when I figured out how to access the forum, I started to read some of the old topics, and I must say he has really came down to earth. Back then, Jayd was actually comparable to Hitler. Hell, more like Stalin. This team is really trying. I still can't understand why people must bash them so much. OK. I can,  the mods slip up a lot of recently, I think my name is still listed as banned, but I'm not sure. Have to check. I saw the controversy surrounding Audiogame's ban, but I can look past all that only because, People forget. There only 3 people. Sorry 4. Guys give the admins a chance.

Early in my time as a mod, we had a firestorm to deal with regarding the whole Dark/Lori/Walter/Aprone mess. I still don't think anyone, self included, dealt with that very well. We had some discussion on the team and decided that closing the thread/suppressing discussion for a little while was a good idea. It really, really wasn't, but we thought it was the best thing to see that cooler heads prevailed. This was not my decision alone, but I was absolutely a part of it, and party to it in the sense that I was the one who enforced it. This is not a position I should ever have been in, one way and another, as the new person. Due to circumstances beyond pretty much everybody's control, I was put out front for it and took 98% of the heat for a decision that was not 98% mine; however, in accepting the mantle of moderator, I also accepted that anything a member of the team did would reflect on everyone on that team.
So yes. I was harsh, uncompromising and was not interested in quibbling. But so was everyone else who set themselves against what we were doing.
This incident is what sparked my somewhat long-winded promise to do better, not to mention amendments to the rules which I believe have helped the community learn from its shortcomings. We realized that the way things were going just couldn't be maintained long-term, so we resolved to change things. We're doing our best here.
I still wouldn't characterize me as Hitler, but what I will own fully is that I was portraying myself as pretty unyielding and forceful, and that is not a good first impression to have left people with. I did it in response to a crisis, and it was absolutely not the right way to have dealt with that crisis. Given it to do over again, I would definitely act differently.

Personally, I kind of miss heavy-handed Jayde. Well, not actually, but despite the mods actually keeping a strict enforcement of rules, it sometimes isn't that noticeable entirely, though the new disciplinary topic does help keep track.

Actually why I started this topic. Despite the more attentive moderation, it doesn't really feel that different. it's not like some places where bannings are unfortunately too frequent for less than valid reasons.

Was hoping to have some people come forward with what they think might be up. There's got to be a reason for the many forum attempts and claims of gloom and doom.
