@Arnald 18, I'd still like headings added to the screen and range info on the nearby list if at all possible, as it would  speed things up quite a lot and not be a huge change.

Unfortunately though, it seems that the waypoint quest tracking is utterly impossible, I tried a bounty quest and looked all over the map, and there was no textual indication at all which square the bounty was on, and sadly since bounty quests seem most frequent this is a bit of a rather large stumbling block to the game.

I also wonder what dungeons are like as well, though unlike most roguelikes, the nearby list hear seems pretty informative.

@Dark: Thanks for your nice small tutorial!
It helped a lot.
But i am not sure if i will stick with this game cause of its clunky controlling behaviour for us.
For example, i am stuck a little in a fight which i cant win. And fleeing is realy painful to master. A lot of keypressing and a huge time to check the history window.
I think i will retire this first character and check out if there are new classes available.
Unfortunately there is no manual for this game at all. The helpscreen only covers the basics.
I will wait if the developer will answer the requests.
Oh, and one last thought for now:
@Dark: Maybe there is a special class ability to help you with all this tracking and quest tracking?

2019-12-23 08:58:17 (edited by Dark 2019-12-23 09:00:27)

Well fights you can't win are a danger, though there are some things you can do to survive, EG craft yourself some gear, make sure to remember to eat, and of course practice the fine art of cowardice , since even if you can't use the /exit command to beat a hasty retreat, you can always get back to the world map by running straight out of an area, the jump command is useful too.

Always inspect your enemies, and if they're too tough take note.
My only problem in terms of combat is that it is a little lengthy to keep looking each time enemies move to check range.

with NVdA at least, the quick actions window always turns up at the top, so you can speed actions up by hitting ctrl home to go to it and clicking from there, similarly you can always get to the edit area quickly. The only slightly problematic thing is finding the end of the log/beginning of the nearby list, since it's usually quicker to go from the bottom, hence the need for headings.

With classes, if you mean the Astronomer's ability, I've tried the astronomer class, but I'm guessing whatever the benefit is, either I've not been around the world map at night to see it activate, or it is purely graphical and makes no difference.
Besides in a game with so many interesting classes, only having one would be depressing big_smile.

I admit at the moment I'm in two minds about Fara. ON the one hand I'm loving the exploration and complexity and all the locations, on the other I don't like the fact that I always feel rather stuck with  really progressing in the game due to the mapping problem, and that some of the screen navigating is a bit long winded at the moment, though I suspect if the waypoint thing were fixed I'd probably put up with that for the sake of an interesting game.

2019-12-23 09:53:37

HAHAHAHA, i totaly agree with you. We got the same problems with navigation.
How do you raise your abilities and how do you learn new ones?
For example. I choped down some trees. But i am not sure if this got me some progress in any ability.
And yes, i am twominded too. There are allways new ideas coming to my mind which i want to test.

2019-12-23 11:09:10

I don't know if you can learn abilities, though I know the character I progressed most with had better stats than when he started out and that the game keeps track of things like number of monsters inspected and killed.

I gather the game is intended to be vague about a few things, EG I believe you need to learn spells from spellbooks, but where you get them goodness knows.

Also you can apparently get more party members, but though sometimes when I've greeted someone described as a commoner they become a named character I haven't had them become a follower as yet, you can also have a mount and engage in mounted combat, though the only time I've seen other friendlies on my side is with the cat whisperer.

Unfortunately, I suspect much in the game changes when you start doing quests, getting better gear and being directed around the map, indeed according to the help file there are both dungeons and even collosiums to fight in, though I've not run across either yet.

I actually wonder if something happened to the developer of this game, since he seemed extremely active until about 7 months ago, then completely fell off the map, though since discord seemed his most frequent method of interaction, and there are apparently still people supporting the game on Patrion I'm not sure.

if we don't hear anything back this could be a frustrating deadend indeed.

Given this a shot on a WIn10 VM.

So...uh...ya, what's the command to turn off the map? Didn't find it in the /help stuff, but then again only got like 20 commands in before the table cut offf.

Does the game save if I for some reason close the window? Or is it done right then and there? If browser is more accessible than desktop then I wanna go for that one.

Why do ghost hunters have to hunt ghosts? Well, there's a fear of being ghosted out there. They may need therapy as well as their ghost hunting kit.

2019-12-23 16:45:26

hello guys
i tried to play this game usingmy iphone's safari.
but i cannot play this.
did anyone play this game?
if so, please give me advice.

hi. i am a dark matter miner. yeah, i am setting mines that when something steps on it, it will explode and release huge amount of dark matters. oh sorry... i am a slave miner, i am mining dark matters...

2019-12-23 17:04:32

@JaceK, The command to turn the map off is togglemap (obviously with the slash in front), though if the help table is cutting off something might be going weird on your display since I could read it in chrome right to the end.
There are commands in the help section involved with scrolling but I haven't missed with them.
Unless you specifically want to use a windows screen reader, you shouldn't need to run this game in a virtual machine as it runs in a browser, though I don't know how well voiceover plays with random clickable stuff. There's even a downloadable package for mac Here on the downloads page .

@Mata, the game will play in your browser whether you download it or not, one reason it's so accessible, and will save with no trouble either way.
I personally would recommend downloading the game, as the layout is complex, and the itch.io version has obviously all the stuff from itch.io's own site as well as the game, so for example if you hit ctrl home to go to the top and check the quick actions, you'll have more stuff to look through.

For people having trouble, I tried to give a few bits of handy starting advice in post 20, including about the interface and how to play, which should hopefully be of some use.

Sadly no news from the developer yet. I really do wonder if the poor chap met with some unfortunate circumstances, given how active he apparently was right up until may and then nothing.

Can you somehow check the status of a quest?
I had to escord someone to a settlement. I think i lost him somewhere. Can i still find him or is he gone now?
The history only telling me that i am not targeting him anymore.
And there is nothing specific in the quest-screen about the quest.

And yes, I'm afraid something must have really happened to the developer.

2019-12-23 20:08:31 (edited by Dark 2019-12-23 20:17:23)

You can hit shift Q to tell you about quests. I haven't tried an escort quest so goodness knows with that one.

It's sad, I suspect if the developer was still around, assuming he was a reasonable person, I imagine he'd have been okay about making the few changes necessary for the game to be fully accessible, since on average very active devs who care about their games have tended to be most receptive to accessibility, and looking at this one, it seems updates were very frequent at one stage.

Yeah, i think thats the normal quest-screen. I will try to move back to where i saw him last. Maybe he is still there, haha.

@Dark: I was using it on a VM so I could have a downloaded vdersion (the Electron build on Linux isn't new enough to work with Orca), I'll admit, I haven't tried it in a browser, however so I'll try that in Chrome now and see how it goes

Well I'm very pleased to announce to everyone that apparently I've been utterly wrong!
Today I checked my inbox and got the following male:

Fara's developer wrote:

Hey there!
This is some great feedback, and I'd be more than happy to make some changes in the next release to increase accessibility. I also really appreciate you sharing the game on the AudioGames forum! One command that might be worth checking out is /voice. Enabling it will cause the game to read the event log out loud. The command isn't listed anywhere because it's VERY rough and needs a lot of work. Even then, maybe someone will find it helpful. Thanks for checking out FARA!
- Brian

So, good news all around, and hopefully those fixes will be coming after all, since I think if the interface and access hassles can be ironed out this could be something very special completely unlike anything we've seen before.

sadly, I tried the voice command and it doesn't seem to work which is a miner pain, since auto log speaking even in Sapi could speed up gameplay I think.

HAHAHAHAHA! Oh! This! Is! Christmas!
Realy! I am so glad he is OK!
Fara rocks!

Wow! This is christmas indeed!

2019-12-24 14:22:52

What a brilliant Christmas gift! I hope he'll join us on the forum one day as well. Either way, I'm looking forward to finding out where this goes and glad the dev is OK.

2019-12-24 15:28:15

@Dark:

The /voice command works in Firefox, but not Chrome (not tested in Chromium yet), and appears, least on my Linux machine to use Espeak-NG and the first voice, so Afrikaans narrated Fara.

Then again, now I got that going, I'm enjoying this game. I did shoot the dev a quick email asking for a bit of help and my feedback. I'd try Firefox instead of Chrome with Fara, and see if the /voice command works

@JaceK, Thanks for the browser suggestion, I don't actually have firefox on here. My test of it years ago was quite the disaster, albeit that was still with Supernova,  and with all the recent NVDA problems I decided to give it a miss, so I'll wait for the fixes I think, particularly with me not really being a fan of espeak anyway.

@Aaron, I did give the developer a link to this forum and this thread in particular if he fancies joining.

I am using the downloadversion on a win10system and the voice-command doesnt say anything.
Not a big problem for me cause i dont like espeak and most of all other tts so much.
There are things like the distance notifications and the directions stuff which are much more important for us.
I realy hope we can welcome the developer here soon!

2019-12-24 16:32:07

this isn't a bad game. of course I'm running in to the same issue I do in all rogue-likes. I get in over my head and die quickly. I'll try it in firefox. if he improves accessibility, this would be great.

Much less active on this forum than in the past.

@liam: I do the same thing. At least I know how to chop trees. I ended up getting in over my head too.

@Dark/et al: It does work with Google's TTS.....apparently as well, but for me it cuts it off and only ever speaks one sentence.

I've never seen Googles tts work on windows so not sure on this one.
As compared to most roguelikes, I'll say Fara is slightly more forgiving if you make sure to do as much as you can in the starting area, EG chop some trees, make any gear you can, eat to get buffs, and of course as I said, if you do get into trouble, remember running like a sissy is the better part of not getting slaughtered big_smile.

One thing I particularly like, is that monsters attack each other in the wild, meaning that often you can  let them do your job for you, plus your attacks are timed, meaning that frequently combining quick attacks with heavy attacks can be a good tactic, EG when  the log tells you a creature is beginning tale sweep, you can often interupt with a quick attack.

also remember that inspecting a monster is like the compare commands in muds, and if your told something is dangerous it probably is.

the only miner pest is that without the quest fix, finding anything stronger than wooden skin or boen gear seems to be a complete gamble, as your not getting the quest rewards that would let you tool up properly. You can apparently smith ores and smelt metals into more powerful gear, but I've yet to work out how that's done.

A realy realy helpful command is "moveto" cause it saves a lot of manual stumbling.

Where can you see your buffs?
I had a nice orange-dinner. But i dont know if it raises something.
Oh, and i dont think killing or butchering or crafting will give you any progress in raising your char, wright?
So its all about gear and food.

2019-12-25 17:23:45

I believe it shows buffs such as "happy" under the status heading which appears just above the injury and below the quick actions, , where it also says "wounded, injured" etc.

As far as I've gathered butchering or crafting don't provide benefits on their own beyond their products, (after all, woodcutting in this game is essentially attacking a tree), however eating and gear are good things to have, and crafting doesn't take very long to  do.

I'd not recommend wooden swords, but wooden buclers are easy to make and very quick, as are leather waterskins. Burlap gear can be crafted relatively easily though I've not worked out at the moment which trees give plant fibre and which don't, you can also make wooden bows and arrows too and ranged weapons can be good.
