Hi,

I've downloaded the trial version of Roland Sound Canvas VA, but I can't find out how to use it?

When I install it, there isn't an exe-file or something that I can run anywhere, and there's not a new midi-port in my midi-programs with Sound Canvas VA.

I've also tried to import the sound canvas va.dll file into a vs10 program, and it sort of Works, but I've read about using it as boath an SC-55 and an SC-88 and some other modes too, and it also has some effects too, but I can't find out how to change any of those Things.

So how to do it?

Thanks in advance.

Best regards:
Aksel Christoffersen

There isn't an EXE to run, this is a VST plugin only. Your VST host is expected to scan for VSTs and find it that way. I'm not sure if Sound Canvas VA is even that accessible, though people have gotten it to work with DOS games.

Another question:
Not counting the Sound Canvas VA, does anyone know what is the closest I can get to the real sound of a Roland SC-55?

there are a few roland sc55 soundfonts floating around on the net. the one by Jexubandicoot is probably the most acurit.

also, if you have SCVA installed, foobar's midi plug in can use the dll directly, bypassing the vst plugin. It's under advanced>Midi>secret sauce path (Code5, creator of the midi plug in, calls this engine secret sauce, since it was deliberetly put in as an easter egg). Set the path to where SCVA is installed. If dun correctly, under the normal midi prefferences, an aditional option will be added: secret sauce flavor, which determins what sound set should be used, of course one of the options is sc55.

I've now tried the soundfont you menchoned, and it sounds very good, I think.

But as fare as I know, foobar is a media player, so if I set all this up, as you describe, can I then play midi files in other applications with Sound Canvas VA, like will it be accecible as a midi device or something?

Also, I'm thinking of maybe buying a real Roland SC-55 device, but does anyone know how big it is?

Is it a full size keyboard, or a Little portable device like for example a DECtalk Express, just as an example, and will it Work with modern Windows?

I must confess that I don't know much about sound modules.

You can use Sound Canvas VA with Reaper, but before that you load it, first you need to load ReaControlMIDI and finally the Sound Canvas VA. ReaControlMIDI comes bundled with Reaper. With it you can navigate through programs and banks.

@4, It should also be noted that there are some glitches in the SC-55 emulation in Sound Canvas VA, though, such as an incorrect ride cymbal, most noticeable in the Grabbag theme from Duke Nukem 3D, and a cymbal that doesn't mute properly, most noticeable in Doom E1M1. The general consensus seems to be that for the most accurate reproduction of the SC-55, you should get the hardware, but SoundCanvas VA will work for the SC-88 and above. @5, Yes, foobar2000 is a media player, so you won't be able to use Sound Canvas VA as a MIDI device with it.

@7 Actually, you can play MIDI files with Sound Canvas VA with foo_midi. Just you insert the path to the DLL file under Preferences>Advanced. In the advanced tab, Playback>MIDI Player>VSTi search path : <empty>. You must press spacebar button and paste the path to the folder that contains the DLL, press enter and apply. Now, under Preferences>Decoding>MIDI Player, you can select the VST in the combo box, apply changes and voila.

Yes, though I believe Akse wanted a MIDI device he could use with other programs, similar to CoolSoft VirtualMIDISynth.

In that case, he can use VST MIDI Driver.

Sounds good, but I'm still thinking of buying a actual SC-55 device, but I just need to find out if it can Work with modern Windows.

Do anyone know if there's a big difference between the original SC-55 and SC-55mkII, in terms of sound and compatibility with modern Windows?

2019-04-23 08:21:20

As far as I know, those devices are just MIDI devices. As long as you have a MIDI interface that works with your computer, you should be good to go.

2019-04-25 18:03:53

But how do I connect it? Do they use a serial port, or is there a specific type of plug called a midi plug or something?

Do anyone know, if the SC-55mkII sounds different than the original SC-55?

2019-04-26 01:04:49

You'll need a MIDI cable to connect from the Roland to the MIDI interface on your computer. MIDI uses its own cables, which are unlike serial, parallel or USB, it's its own standard.

But as fare as I know, my computer doesn't have such a plug. Does there exist a midi to USB converter?

2019-04-26 19:48:10

Yes, several companies make USB to MIDI adapters, I haven't tried them so I can't recommend anything in particular.
