I've been on the ropes about buying this one for a good while now, because the gear and stats system really turn me off from it. That being said though, I think I'd have fun with the story mode and such, and the fighting mechanics are great. I read somewhere about a competitive mode that disables the gear system entirely, and I was wondering if that can be turned on for all modes? I don't do much online play, I'd mainly do arcade mode, or whatever it's called in this game, and local vs mode occasionally.

yes, i agree there, i completely ignore the gear system and can still play perfectly
and the mission mode is grate

If you want to do some of the multiverse events you definitely will need to put time into gear and leveling though. A lot of them require  a certain level to start, but there should always be some level 1 ones around. I think the classic tower equivalent Injustice 2 has should be fine though.
