Hi all,

Those of you who play Sryth got the email about this, but I really hope this Kickstarter is a success.
Matt implies in the description of the project that, should this be a success, he'll focus less on the financial side of things. I'm hoping this means less pay to win item packages and such every month.

Thanks for this, I didn't get that email, but I did back them. I don't know if he'll hit that goal, but we'll see.

I...have serious doubts about this. I'm sorry, but I view with considerable cynicism a claim of needing more money when the last, I dunno, half-decade or so has seen a ton of unfulfilled promises and such. He's saying that Sryth is his main method of making money, so he's been focusing on multi-player scenarios and special packages and heaven knows what, at the cost of actual game development and interesting adventures. It's not completely dead, but it's...wobbly, at the least. The way you keep people playing is by giving them more of what they like, not by becoming aggressively interested in the money of your players.

In other words, I hope this does, in fact, precede new and better things, but I'm not in a position to consider backing, and even if I were, I'm not sure I would.

Hi.
It's sad the game is that difficult to play on a Mac. I might donate, I'm not sure yet. There are so many stories and adventures which has never been finished which is a shame.

Best regards SLJ.

I, like Jade, must be one hell of a cynic. I don't actually see anything in the Kickstarter page that would imply that the game becomes less focused on getting more money out of you. All I see is another avenue for income. He doesn't promise any easement of costs, and in fact the backer rewards are full of nothing but adventurer tokens, which sounds like the financial floodgates are gonna remain wide open.

I have no issues paying to play a game I love, but man. The money required to play Sryth? Do you know how many AAA titles I could buy with that, full of voice acting, awesome audio engineering, and (not that it matters to us) spectacular graphics, all of which Sryth just can't boast.

I appreciate that Sryth is an amazing adventure. It's wonderfully accessible. It's astoundingly addictive and intriguing... It's also bloody well expensive. I've bought books with more content that cost so much less, so I think I'll just live my epic fantasy dreams through those, and through muds.

Hi,

I considered backing the project, but when i see the rewards you'll get for the packages, i am quite sure i pass on this kickstarter, given the fact that i spend over a few hundred dollars the past years i play the game. And, i am still playing it, it is quite addictive, but not so much, that i decide to buy a backerbundle, given the other packages i already have ...

I'm afraid I lost all confidence in Sryth when it became clear that it was entirely a a pay to win game, I was there at the start in 2004, and occasionally have been back since, but  all the new updates were all about paying for advantage, this after you've actually subscribed to the game.
I'm more than happy to pay to support a developer, I'm even happy to buy in game items if they will let me play more of the game, but just having to buy bigger and bigger weapons or lottery tickets to get those bigger weapons just seems like a cash grab to me, and now the kickstarter just sounds like another. especially when you consider how dam much some of those huge damage weapons are!

The irony is if the gm of sryth had actually focused on more paid modules and selling adventures, as he did back with the original secret of stoneback hill, I'd have probably supported the project, since I'm always up to pay for game content, but  just to even keep pace with current content, especially when that content doesn't actually let me explore much, no thanks, there are plenty of other games I can look to a good experience of textual rpgs and the like.

Its sad, I still hold nostalgic associations about Sryth, it was there that I first ran into Bryan p who introduced me to audiogames, but really it seems the game has gone down a very bad direction, and each and everytime I checked back in, it just seemed to be getting worse.

With our dreaming and singing, Ceaseless and sorrowless we! The glory about us clinging Of the glorious futures we see,
Our souls with high music ringing; O men! It must ever be
That we dwell in our dreaming and singing, A little apart from ye. (Arthur O'Shaughnessy 1873.)

Admittedly, I have bought two or three special packages for Sryth and have been able to stay current. I have approximately 340 melee and stamina and about 93 nevernel reserve. In other words, I would say it's not exactly pay-to-win, but more pay-for-perks. You absolutely do not have to pay hundreds of dollars just to complete regular adventures. Some are hard, it's true, but most are pretty reasonable. The only exception is stuff where you are pitted against others directly, such as some of the Battlegrounds stuff, or the multiplayer scenarios, where people with nearly 8 times my stats can quite obviously do far more damage to monsters before having to retreat or whatnot.
Apart from that, my feelings are almost exactly the same as Dark.

Seems like I haven't missed much since I stopped playing the game back in 2009. smile

I've looked at the rewards, and nope. Not while you're offering something that is gonna break your game that badly, nope. Sorry. I loved the story, but the constant "Donate your money to my cause!" message turned me away. I don't think I've gotten far, in fact, I'm sure that I didn't purchase the lifetime upgrade for an account, all because of all these items a person could buy to have an advantage over somebody who couldn't pay.

I have great memories of Sryth also like dark and jade. I was back there with dark in the early days, and it was very exciting and oh so fun and new. I've sunk hundreds into sryth also and its been fun, but I'll go no further.
Thanks anyway.

Well, he did it. With 205 people, the kickstarter is a success.

Now we'll see if he actually follows through on his promises. I have my doubts, but I hope I'm wrong.

Take care, it's a desert out there.

Hi,
Happy that the kickstarter actually went through and here's hoping for better things.
To be honest as much as sryth seems to be a pay to win game, from what I was able to play a few years ago, most things are doable even without spending mountains of money, most stories adventures were the kind you could play through just a bit of a grind is all.
And for what I actually payed or you end up paying for either a AG membership or the lifetime upgrade, the content that you can could play was pretty good and worth it, imo, of course.
Its just the new adventures I am unsure about as I haven't played in a long while and even how many new adventures have been added sinse if any at all.
When all is said and done, I don't think there's an alternate to sryth around, even now, at least the type of many adventures etc that you can do with just one character and the like. pretty old school but still fun
And before people think I am defending my investment, even if I wanted to I couldn't pay for ATS adventurer packs and the like. The only 2 things I have brought over the years to support the game and unlock content are the AG adventurer's subscription and the lifetime upgrade when it came out.

I backed it, so I hope things improve also.  it's been a long time since I last played, so I'm in discovery mode again which is great.  Interestingly enough, the experience on a phone is pretty nice.  Just wish I was better at mapping dungeons... tongue

I backed it as well and was glad to see it succeed. Guess we'll see what happens.

But wait, what's that? A transport! Saved am I! Hark, over here! Hey nonny non, please help!

2019-03-24 21:50:35

I'm pleased to have seen it succeed, but when I saw all the rewards people could get, I was very conflicted. On one hand, if I was a millionaire I might've helped out in a big way just to wield a big stick, because wow. At the same time, though? So, so, so many random boosts and stuff, so that there are constant ways to use them to effect against others. It's not just about you having a "click to win" button, essentially, but with the huge focus on multiplayer stuff, having bonuses to skill checks, improved stamina and such, not to mention all the other benefits? It's just a lot.
So I will be interested to see how many of the literally hundreds of loose ends he fixes in the next year. I will be watching carefully.

Hi.
I didn't bagged the kickstarter, but I'm happy he made it. I hope the best for the game in the future.
