Hi all,

After the topic of arqmeister about pokemon let's go and a recording of a blind friend who uses the nintendo switch as his primary mainstream console, i became interested in this console as well. However i am mainly a xbox user, i am really considering into adding this console to my gaming arsenal. But i have a few questions:

1. How readable are the texts with seeing ai, i know that differences can occur smile
2. Can the main interface of the switch be read with seeing ai as well, or is it learning the menu's and associated sounds of the various pictograms?
3. Are there any other playable games then pokemon let's go and super mario smash brothers?

As i said earlier, i heard that every pictogram does have it's own sound, and that pokemon let's go is quite playable with the new sound design. But yeah, let me stop rambling, and give you the oppertunity to destroy my raising some more by adding another gaming console, of which my family probably will tell me on what i wanna do with it tongue

Hey Pelantas.
As a Nintendo Switch user myself, I unfortunately can't give any information about visual presentations as I am totally blind, however I can say that every time I've needed sighted assistance, they seemed to be able to read it, even at the low brightness setting I have it on, which can be increased or decreased to your liking smile.
Every time you launch a game, the most recent game icon will be brought to the front, unless there is a way of keeping the games in order which I don't know about, but I've managed with this, and as a sighted user, you should have no trouble with the layout smile
As for games, Dragon Ball Fighter Z is quite accessible, not including the story mode which is like a tile layout I don't understand. :d.
Apart from that, I don't really go for games like Smash Bros and stuff because it aint my cup of tea, however I'm sure you will find a game suitable for you, as there is a big variety of Mario games to choose from that have been ported to the switch, surprise surprise! :d.
I'm sorry my advice hasn't been as positive as I would of liked it to be, but at least I gave you all the info I had, better take advice you won't regret rather spending 250£GBP/300$USD on something you can't or won't play with.

Hi,

@theblindsaiyan,

Thanks a lot for your fast reply. The thing actually is, i am blind as well smile But i realize now that ai and eye do sound the same, however they're written differently. I ment, seeing AI, as in artificial intelligence, an iphone app from microsfot which is quite dedicated into reading textual information, for example on a screen or a piece of paper.

I think i will go to the game store this week and ask if i may try one in combination with pokemon let's go, but if you or others do have other or extra information, please don't hesitate to share. Not only me can learn and grow due to this, but we as community. Cause we have quite addapted the xbox, we pushed playstation more off thee boarder, however various members still use the console, my respect as well, no offence at all, but lets also see if we can addapt the switch more then it is currently being done, at least, as far as i know smile

Ah OK, my mistake, sorry for misunderstanding.
As I said though, brightness is key, therefore I think you may want to higher your brightness so the app seeing AI has a better chance of reading your screen for you.
I wish you look in trying, and hope you find what your looking for in the Nintendo switch smile

HI

haha no worries pal, when i walk over the sidewalk, most people do think that i am sighted anyway, cause of my speed of movement, and i am gesturing while i talk, so i have a very visual way of doing things and a very visual appearance for the outside world, but that isn't relevant for this topic smile

Thanks a lot for this tip as well, cause every single bit of info that i can gather helps on deciding smile

Hey again Pelantas.
Well, apart from setting up your Nintendo account for your switch, you will also be asked to create a MII, which is like an avatar for Nintendo users, if I spelt it right smile.
Any other things you need to know just ask, I'm glad I can help smile

Re: brightness, I'm not sure how the settings work these days, but I own a Sega Nomad, a handheld from the 90s that plays Genesis games, and its maximum brightness was a useless blur. It's possible that devices since then have set the maximum somewhere more useful, but if you find that Seeing AI can't read it at max brightness, maybe try something like 75-90%?

Hi,
Just m luck I just posted in the Pokémon topic about me wanting a switch and asking how it works, and, boom, I then find this topic where I can ask my questions. Firstly Where can I find a recording of the Switch? I'd like to be able to hear and get an idea of it's interface, and also, what is the interface like? How easy is it to navigate for a totally blind person, and what's the best way to select different games? Is it best to go the cartridge or digital route for this console?

2019-01-18 15:34:07

Hi,

@aaron,

I hope i can be of any use with my answers smile
But i think you can find something on youtube, i hope at least, i am currently watching a lets play about lets play pikachu, but that doesn't tell you anything about the switch interface itself. I do know at least, that the menu's don't wrap in the console, so making counting rather easy and correcting mistakes, jsut navigate back upward and count again. Each pictogram does have it's own sound, so you can know on what you click, and i do believe that going for the physical cardridges is the more easy way, cause the list of recently played games can get rather extensive when you all have them in digital format, i make a reference to the way on how playstation does this. Not very handy to work with at least.

I hope this answers did help you a little bit smile

The switch interface is vary basic, and only has thre lines on it that each sound different as you move your curser over the spaces.
If you can't move anywhere, or if you can't do anything, the switch will make a vary distinct sound when you press a button or direction.
The topmost space is your user settings, but once you have someone set that up for you, you won't ever need to go there.
The second line is your games, and while I only have smash brothers, it shows up on the left, and the line actually says, "Insert a game cartrage or download some software from the Nintendo eshop, so the other spaces to its right are also for that as well.
Once you select a game you'll be asked which user will play it, but you can disable that in user settings if you wish and have the switch just launch the game.
Please take note that their are no banner sounds like on wii u or 3ds, so you might have to launch games until you find the one you want, or just use cartrages.
The bottom roe has a few things.
News, Eshop, Album, System settings, and sleep mode.
Each one makes a different sound when launched except sleep mode.
From the home menu; accessed by holding down the home button for a second or so, you can adjust the brightness and headphone volume by just holding left or right to decrease or increase the setting respectively.
The volume will go up and down as you do this while the brightness won't change the sound volume at all.
The top option is sleep mode.
Speaking of sleep mode, by default you'll need to press the same button three times to wake up the switch in handheld
mode, but you can disable this in settings.
To turn off your switch, press down and hold the power button for about five seconds to display the power menu.
The top option is sleep mode, the middle is power, and the bottom one is close.
Selecting power will change it to restart, add an off choice below it and then the close option.
So, press and hold power for five seconds, release, then; on your controller, press down, then A, then down, and A again.
You'll need to do this within ten seconds or the system will go to sleep.
When turning on your switch, you'll need to hold the power button for a second or so, then wait about ten seconds for the switch to boot, then press anything on your controller to make it work, then press A to start the menu.
One last thing, before your switch is set up, plugging it into a power plug will turn it on, and it'll stay on until it's set up.
So don't plug it in until you're ready to set it up.
If you do need to turn it off, you can, sort of, by activating the force crash mesure by holding down power for 10 seconds or so.
Hope this can be of help.
Later!

Hi.
Wow. Thanks for all this awesome information. I have read this topic with huge interest.
So, regarding digital games: Sounds like the Switch have the same issue as the Playstation 4 with the reason games list which changes each time you launch a game.
Does it have a games library where it might be easier to find the game you wanna play?
Is the Nintendo store as accessible as the Playstation and Microsoft store through the website? Can you check lots of online stuff as well like achievements, add friends, chat etc. from the Nintendo website?

Best regards SLJ.

In my opinion, the best way to keep track of switch games is to buy cartridges. It requires some  trial and error, but when you insert a game card, it will be the first game that pops up.
Some other accessible games include 1-2 switch, some minigames in Super Mario Party, Mario Tennis Aces, and Mario Kart 8 deluxe, which has assisted steering. I hope this helps.

A winner is you!

This is some pretty cool information!  I've always wondered if anyone here has had any success with the switch.  I definitely wouldn't mind checking one out if there's some usability. It's somewhat off topic, but I always thought it was pretty cool how you could create a Nintendo avatar that can even be played in some games. I wonder if there would be some way to go about an audio equivalent? Hmm...

Trying to free my mind before the end of the world.

Hi,

Yesterday i played all day with the new Nintendo switch and lets play pikachu, i will write down a small menu guide on what i have gathered in a new topic.

@mitch

Could you tell me more about the menu's of mario kart 8 deluxe cause i just ordered that game as well, it will be delivered tuesday. And, is the smart steering turned on automaticly? Or should i turn it on each time i select a kart? Or should i turn it on once and it will remain turned on?

But, yeah, i am very eager to know about the menu's of that game.

Really, i love this console.

The menus are very linear in nature, with only one column.
Here is a rough guide from what I remember, to be edited if need be:
When you boot up the game, you must press L and R on the controller that Player One is using. In the the top menu, your first option is single player, followed by local multiplayer, followed by online,.
Once you enter the single player, you are presented with a menu ! includes the main modes:
Grand Prix,
Vs.
Time Trial,
And Battle mode.
When entering into the Grand Prix mode, note that the menus do wrap. The opq for speed are 50cc, 100cc, 150cc, Mirror, and 200cc.
In regards to smart steering, it is always on, except in time trials, where (because it is based on skill), you can not turn it on. I hope that helped.

A winner is you!

Hi,

@mitch, thanks a lot for your explanation. So if i understand correctly is the smart steering automaticly turned on? That makes starting with the game very easy. I can't wait till it will be delivered tomorrow. At some point i also want to try out super mario aces smile

Thanks to all who gave me a solidified vision for the nintendo switch, you made me decide to try it, and i am loving it.

Hmmm really tenis ases is accessible? how? Do you have to turn on somethin special like on mario kart? Or only based in sound.

In my case, for portability and in the case of loose the console, I choose the digital way, I only have Mario odisey in cartridge (because was my first game) but all of the other games are digital.
My unique problem is that when I want choose a game that isn't resently played, I have to waste some time, triing picking the differents games, to finally get the game that I want.

Games that I know that a blind person can be funny with them obviously is Super smash, dragon ball fighterz, pokken tournament, all the naruto ninja revolution serie, the two street fighters, the upcoming mortal kombat 11, and well, reading the forum, lets go, and mario kart, can be good options; I only have kart for wii u, but If works the auto steerin option, sounds good to get it.

A, oter game that can you play with a friend, is Diablo III. If your friend is sighted, you can put your character to follow them, so your player is automatically following the movement (in a range) of your friend to go to the diferent places, but you can fight, use skills and all of other stuf.

Thanks for the info!

So, a small sort option can be good, but.... well, isn't a grat problem really.

HI all,

Is there a pause button on the switch controller? Like the menu button on xbox and playstation so a game of mario kart for example can be paused?

Pelantas, the sthat steering is on by default.  You also use the tiny + and — buttons on the top of each JoyCon.
Also, I completely forgot to mention ARMS, which while being in 3D, can be played with sound alone.

In Mario Tennis Aces, if you turn off the music and make Toad shut up (he's loud), you will hear the shots come towards you in the stereo field. It's accessible, but that doesn't mean it's easy.

Is there any chance that someone might be able to do an audio review/demo of the Switch?

2019-01-25 06:26:00

Hi.
I could do a Switch demo but showing what? I coul show how to change the screen brightness, and settings like that and playing a little smash big_smile
Mario Kart it's... Accessible? I couldn't play anny Mario Kart game, I had the 3DS game before. But on Switch it's playable?

I am a gamer from the begining of my life, and that will not change :p
