I like that idea.  I'll work on implementing that next time I work on the code.

I love the idea of custom item lists!  I was thinking about that on Sunday, how it would be like a thousand games in one, if you could choose a list to use, thus making different-themed stores.
And that just gave me another idea!  I'm going to make a Christmas one!

2015-10-13 18:46:43

Hello, it seems that I am the only one who cant get his head around the game properly.
Can someone give me some tips on how to start the game and dont lose like 5000 euros in the first few days?
I always sell my things, but my money goes down and I dont know what to do about that.
Greetings Moritz

Hail the unholy church of Satan, go share it's greatness.

Hello.
1. @simba: you should manage what to buy and how much to price. If you find something priced, let's say, $800 in the wearhouse, you might find that people aren't wanting to pay like $600, and thus you'll be losing $200 per item, which will let you lose some bucks: make sure you ask the market research team when you first launch the game and want to buy valuable items.
2. @Aprone: The thing I liked about the game is that it used the money of my own country. In other words, it  uses the local money of the country the player lives in. So just out of curiosity, how did you figure that out? Is it done online or directly throughout a certain DLL? Just curious big_smile

2015-10-13 20:38:05

Roro, I have the game check your computers regional settings so it knows what money to say.  The only down side to that is that I know money in different places have different values and this game doesn't know how to take that into consideration.  For example, a $1000 television makes sense using US dollars.  If a player in China is playing U-Mart they might see a 1000 yen television, which is absurdly cheap, LOL!  So it tries to make people feel more at home, but the numbers themselves might be a bit unrealistic for the area you live in.

Yeah, and that's the case in Lebanon where I live, 1 single dollar is 1500 Lebanese pounds, but anyway the importance is in the game itself, not in the value of the money, keep up a great work!

2015-10-14 18:21:00

Mirage I love the Christmas store idea.  When I first though up custom item lists I was thinking of stuff like, hardware store, grocery store, electronics store.  I can sure see I wasn't being very creative, when the first 2 ideas you guys type out are a magic store and Christmas themed items!  You guys rock.  big_smile

New update has been posted, which should help you with your customized stores.

Changes from 0.9c to 0.9d

- Fixed a bug that would tell you about AI players going bankrupt after loading a saved game, even though they had already been bankrupt.  The first time you load an old saved game this bug will probably still happen, but saving it again should correct the bug.
- From the main menu you can now enable and disable the default game items, as well as any custom item list files.  This will let you fully customize your store managing experience.
- Fixed a bug that could affect saved games, causing them to show some gibberish once loaded.

Ah, that's right! I can create for example, CD shops, musical instruments shops, ETC ETC ETC.
Thanks so much!

Ja volim samo kafu sa Rakijom.

2015-10-14 22:02:42

CD shop could be interesting, but I'm wondering how that would work as while you can set prices, I don't know if keeping cds at their normal prices would work for this so the shop would be quite unrealistic, but quite fun too.

2015-10-15 03:10:14

uh, problem. i disable the default, ... start a new game ... guess what? all normal items are back again. exit the game back to the menu, and check the custom option? ... nope, default is enabled again. rofl. damn thing refuses to take hold.

2015-10-15 03:45:59

yeah i also noticed that it doesn't seem to know how many items the custom lists says it just says that items1.txt has items without giving a number like it does for the default list.

hmm, would anyone mind posting their custom item lists for me?  I'll see if I can figure out where the problem is.

Oh, if your custom items add up to be less than 28 items, the game will enable the default list automatically.  I'm not sure if that is the case here, but just tossing that out there.  The game needs a minimum of 28 items to play.

(Possible dumb question ahead.)
When I update the game, what do I do with the old version?  Last time, I uninstalled it and saved the newer version onto my PC.  The problem with that is that I didn't get to keep any of my custom items lists.
Is there an easier way to update?
Should I just run the new version without doing anything to the older one?

2015-10-15 04:47:17

You can just unzip the new version into the same folder and have it overwrite the older one.  That will preserve your item lists, as long as you didn't just add those new items into items1.txt.

hi aprone, yeah, list length is more then likely my problem. will put together a bigger one and try again. lol.

2015-10-15 11:21:42

ok. i can confirm that list length was the fault behind that little problem. now i'm come up with another. the game appears to randomly be freezing up and locking, and i have to close it and restart it. no obvious patern to me as of yet, but it just seems to be random. it does tend to happen most, when buying new stock.

2015-10-15 17:24:55

Keba, I've been sitting here thinking about this reported lock up, and I might have an idea.  Do you happen to know if you only have 28 items?  When I put in the 28 item limit for the game, I am thinking now that the limit probably should have been set to more like 30.  If you currently have exactly 28 items, try adding 2 more and see if the game still freezes.

big_smile big_smile big_smile I never thought these will let me gain double their price and let me pay all my loan in my second game weak, anyway the save I was playing is now completed with a great victory smile

2015-10-15 20:24:27

Sorry for double posting, but thought I'd give you a suggestion: Why not to make/give us the ability to make items with fixed prices, like, hmm, an IPhone 6S with the price always fixed to $649, or some foods which prices never change?

2015-10-15 22:31:10

I had another weird fun idea for a different kind of "store."

I picture this one, kind of like a big Las Vegas resort.  So there are dinners of varying prices, from fast food, to expensive steak dinners.  Then there are show tickets for concerts, plays, etc.  Then there are "passes" for sections of the resort - spa, amusement park, water park, wildlife park, and things like that.

I also thought of a "car dealership" items list.

IMO, this is the best kind of game, the one where you can make one game into a million different things.

Well, . . . with 99 list options, I figure I can afford to think outside the box. :-)

2015-10-17 08:25:50

Ahoy all!
so ehh I did manage to keep myself from playing the game while my exams were on, mutters those 2 hours before the exam don't count,no...
Now I can play, and beat you all to the billion mark! wait, is that a good idea or what. tongue

I've just posted a new version.  This one tries to add in a few more things to consider when running your store, plus adds a little more customization.

Changes from 0.9d to 1.0

- I've adjusted the game to now require at least 30 custom items before it will let you disable the game's default item list.
- You can now change the names and store names for your computer opponents on the main menu.  Perhaps you want to feel like you're competiting against friends or family of yours, or perhaps you're using custom items and want the stores you battle to seem more appropriate.
- On normal and hard modes, the computer players will begin the game with a smaller starter loan.
- Fixed a typo in the description for the rewards program.
- A few new ways to draw in customers have been added.  Under store extras, you can now advertise for your store with mailers, billboards, radio commercials, and television commercials.
- The AI opponents are able to use all 4 types of advertising.
- On Normal and Hard mode, the computer opponents are given a discount when buying store extras.  This is meant to encourage them to build them more often than they currently do.
- Shoplifters are more common now.  I was not happy with how rare they were in the past versions, even without any security extras being added to the store.  I want players to feel like they need security measures as the game progresses.
- A new store extra has been added.  Security strips can be placed at the exits to your store, and will beep if a shoplifter tries to take an item through that was not paid for.  Nothing will stop every theif, but this adding these sensors will help.
- When buying store extras, the confirmation message now lists the monthly cost for the purchase you're about to make.
- Random injuries can happen in the store, for either your employees or the customers.  When these rare events occur, be prepared to hand over money to pay the medical expenses.
- Store insurance has been added, under the extras menu.  Having insurance will lower the cost of paying for lawsuits and other damages.
- Some items on the monthly statement will no longer be included if they were at zero.
