This is all just information that is being leaked from the beta, so take it with a pinch of salt, these features may not actually see release.

However in addition to the remapping option that has been doing the rounds of kotaku/reddit/twitter the past couple of days, the full proposed accessibility menu has now been shared by one of the people on the beta.

There are other features in there for low/no vision, presumably only affecting the main PS4 UI rather than games - zoom, text size, high contrast, and a screenreader.

So if you have access to the PS4 beta program I'd strongly recommend you get on there and start sending feedback

oh and also I suppose it wouldn't hurt to let PlayStation know via social media etc if you would value those features being included smile

Hello,
Oh my gosh. This is awesome. I get the feling they might roll it out eventually, but it might take a while. I also hope, that if they do, indeed roll this out, it will give Microsoft a wake up call!

Hello.
Well I would love to see all this do you know if there is a facebook page where I can contact sony or it's playstation team?

Oh dear god in heaven! this is exactly the thing I've been waiting for all these years. For heaven's sake man, get me the information I need to contact sony or their playstation team, since I've got a brand new ps4 still in the box. If they put in a screenreader, you had better by golly believe that I would be playing video games with the rest of you.

Dang the stars for me not having a ps4 right now... otherwise I'd leap on this beta program! I strongly suggest anyone who does have one to get with the beta program, test the features and give Sony as much feedback as possible, not to mention encouragement for adding accessibility functions even though none of them are confirmed for the final version of the 2.50 software and I don't even have a ps3 yet. hahaha.

Alright so where do I sign up for this Beta. I tweeted the official playstation twitter account for the text to speech feature to remain in the final version. Now I want to test it out for feedback.

Hi.
Wow...
If Sony is going to put in a screenreader in the firmware, I'll get a ps4 as quickly as possible. It would be so awesome to use all the other features on the device. big_smile
I look very much forward to hear more about this.

Best regards SLJ.

I was going to buy a ps4 anyway but... if this becomes a thing then my mind will be blown.

This may have just totally pushed me over to the ps4 side. I don't have one, but I've spent the past few months considering a console but there's a few reasons I haven't just jumped on the bandwagon. Never the less, I'll be following this closely. I have a couple friends who have a ps4 who I know will be very interested in this.

If you have twitter, I suggest tweeting @PlayStation to have this feature remain in the final version of the update since this is a Beta. it may be taken out if no feedback is given.

don't have twitter, but this is a good reason to get one! There any particular twitter I should direct my tweets at? I assume chucking them at just Sony will only end up with them getting lost.

I've got twitter, and I'll go right on there and send playstation a tweet. Remember guys, this is a huge Wright brothers moment for us, so what ever you do, give them feedback and advice, but for heaven't sake be kind. We don't want to push them away. I'm going to suggest that they fix the screenreader so that a game's menus are read aloud for you as well as text on the screen, such as in a game where characters speak or other things like that.

I'm curious... is anyone actually part of planning on subscribing to the beta program and trying this? I don't have any ps4 otherwise I'd do it myself. lol

Hi.
Sadly, I don't have any friends WHO have a ps4. Not that I know about. If I had, I would ask them to join the beta team.

Best regards SLJ.

well. I ordered a ps4 yesterday so I'll see about accessing the beta when I get the thing.
edit:
Seems like you need to be invited to the beta party... what a shame.

Hello,
I wouldn't ask them to add text for games, unless they could come up with some sort of API the way NVDA works. I would, however, ask to get the main ps4 interface to read allowed and the game list, as one you are in a game I'm sure most folks would learn the menus. That would be a good starting point. The trouble is, games have different fonts and text styles, and not every dev will probably code in the accessibility API if one gets created, so if we're not careful we could be back to square one. We need to get them to start small.

2015-03-10 18:43:44

hi all of you, I'm glad that ps4 have some accessibility features in the beta program.
sadly, I don't have one right now, but probably soon.
hope that the ps4 will have a fully-functional screen reader that can read the system interface, web browser, apps and games menus, the PlayStation network, and more.
I think it's impossible for the screen reader to read the menus in games, so I think there must be a shortcut to turn on and off the screen reader(if the full 2.5 firmware was released and all accessibility features implemented, including a screen readers).
it's really a huge moments for us, so for any PS4 users on here it's time to throw out your feedback to the developers so the full release of the PS4 software update will have accessibility, including a screen reader.

going in to the wilds, collecting pokedex, and capturing them are my kind of thing,
training them, making them evolve, and generally making them stronger is my ultimate goal,
fighting other manamon tamers, winning the tournament, and fighting octoros are what these manamons like to do,
and ultimately, I become the master of mana!

Hi all.
People around the world has started to confirm the accessibility and especially text to speech in the new update. Read this totally exciting article:

Thanks for the article! Doesn't necessarily confirm it, but definitely helps to see a bit more attention given. Wish there was a bit more detail as to what the text to speech will actually be capable of. Even having different fonts and such, ps4 games could possibly still be developed with a lot of similar things under the hood and not in all cases through custom api's, so hopefully we will see something. but I wish a blind user could actually join this beta program and inform about how extensive this tts is.

Hi.
Suddenly, an awesome idea came to my mind:
No, a screenreader might not be able to read the menus in games. But... What if a recognition feature could be made, so the users could write their own text for each menu, and then get it read by the screenreader?
Here is the concept:
You get a new game. You ask a sighted person to help with the menus. The sighted person can pick a menu, go to an accessibility menu, and then write the menu item in plain text which will then be read by the text to speech feature when arrowing through the menus. Then, those menus could be shared, so you can either share them with your friends, or share them in a special accessibility spot, where users could share their menus. What do you think about this?
I hope someone will write to Sony about this feature request.

Best regards SLJ.

As has been said by others above, we have to start small... right now we have to convince sony that the tts as it is is goode enough at least to start with. they aren't going to go through the trouble to write things like that if they don't know if people will use them or not. Like the idea though... but I would prefer to have the screen reader be able to read everything.
