Just read through this thread; this sounds interesting. What I found most interesting is that this can, or could, work with Steam. Is this the only screen reader that can do this, or are there others?

If the screen reader starts, but then doesn't say anything, you might have downloaded the paid version.
The default voice is something that I think they call skyvoice or something like that. It is made for Chinese, so hearing it read English is interesting. You can change it to a more american sounding English voice, but then it doesn't read Chinese characters. I wonder if they use 2 different tts engines or something because for the last 3 years I have tried to set one as the first voice and the other as the second, and it just says they won't match. I would think you can do this with the Chinese voices though. I am not sure if it reads steam content. It doesn't always do well in windows with changing text. It has trouble reading the status of windows updates, for instance. Nvda could do this. People say it uses very little resources though, so if it did read steam, it could be a good option for resource heavy games maybe.
There is also a companion program that you can download called Zhi Duo Yin which lets you download music, check the weather, read Beijing approved news, and a few other things. I'm not sure if it works with the free version though as it always crashed last year when i had the free version.

Sounds like a recent change Microsoft made to Windows in 1903 broke it, and this company isn't particularly fast at updating it. Sending them an Email or posting on the forum is probably the best course of action.

When the ZDSR started and played the welcome sound, but you didn't hear the tts.
The most times the default tts engine was wrong.
You can try to change the tts engine.
Press ZDSR key and F9 to change to another voice scheme.
Or press ZDSR key and z to open the main menu, and press letter v to open the voice scheme setting dialog.
And tab to the main voice combo box, press down arrow to select another voice.
last press Alt and o to close the voice scheme setting dialog.
