Hi,
There is audacity, wich you can record your song with.
It maybe a little dificoult, but it works. smile

Check me out on soundcloud:

What kind of song?
The lyric can go like this:

I'm walking around in a circle
A purple one, maybe blue
I'm wondering how I can write
Something interesting and new
I'm walking around in a circle

Or... Well, maybe you're better to write that when it's your song... But what do you have in mind? What genre shall the song be - or are you talking about the soundtrack thing in BGT?

To see a world in a grain of sand, and a heaven in a wild flower.
Hold infinity in the palm of your hand, and eternity in an hour.
William Blake - Auguries of Innocence, line 1 to 4

I think Audacity will work. It allows you to record on top of your voice for harmony and stuff.

Go to Heaven for the climate, Hell for the company. - Mark Twain

I'm not sure if you know about qws. It's free, and accessible! I have it and it's worked fine. The only thing is is it uses midi, obviously. That might help to create your vocals. Another option is to get help from vocalists from around here, to pre-record the harmony, and they send it to you.
Good luck with your composition! Let me know if I can be of any further assistance to you.

I don't quite understand,
You say you want vocals,
well if e're being technical, vocals are done with the voice, there-fore you will need a microphone, and a sound recorder/editor.
If you're talking about  representing vocals through other instruments, midi is your best choice!
