hi,
I installed unpatched xp on a vm just to see what would happen
since on a normal pc this unpatched windows got owned as soon as I inserted the ethernet cable
even though the vm was connected to the internet for about 2 hours nothing happened
I am using win 7 ultimate and vmware
so what could have happened

Well giving that vms use a host to actually run, Everything needs to go through the host first.
I have never tried unpatched, bug I guess the host system would take  the load on itself.
Vms are just data files after all not actual systems.
There is no virus that could or has infected a vm and actually dammaged the file since thats about all any real breach could do.
There is no proffit hacking the vm because you would have to hack the host unit first.
I guess if a hacker hacked the main executable of the vm, he could do dammage to it, and maybe the host but then he would have to hack the host first.
