Hi.
I was trying to send dark a pm about this before. I realized 2 wrong things about the database.
1. The bgt site link can no longer work, same for the download link. A working and permanent download link for bgt is
http://world-server.tk/bgt/bgt%201.3%20installer.exe

Also in the db there is an entry called test. It was propably put there for real test purposes, but it has no point and so can be removed in my opinion.
Thanks for reading, simter.

@1, I'd hardly call that perminent.
You can find a really perminent version in the wayback machine.

Well, i can't see in the future, but i don't know why my srv should die in the next months or years.

at least a .tk web address is only valid for one year I believe, which will not make it a permanent solution unless the Wayback Machine link is adopted or the file gets uploaded on the Audio Games Archive.

2019-12-22 23:39:45

@4 it is valit for 1 year. True. But it's on a free renewal basis so if i renew it it will stay.

I don't think the link should be there in the first place if Philip expressed the wish to stop using it and abandoned it. If you want to use unsupported software, you can do some research to get the installer. However, a note should definitely be added about the fact it is no longer supported and the entry is kept for historical reasons.

@6 he also stated that he has no problem with us hosting the installer.

So basically, to hell with abandanware?
Can’t  we label it as abandonware?

2019-12-24 16:20:18

@8 according to your name your problem is probably the klones in bgt. That's what i think. Also i know no person that uses no abandoned software at all.

Was responding to 6

Also, I voted yes
Games made in BGT are not clones. A clone, by my definition is a game or a program that uses stolen code. Python games can be cloned as well. But most of the time especially here people share their code with on trustworthy people and then it keeps spreading and spreading and that’s how we get clones
So basically it’s the developers fault But not always

2019-12-24 17:38:55

Also, BGT, is, abandonware

2019-12-25 00:17:12

@ simnter, ok what if, your link got added to the database and you go editing the file to add malware or... . So that’s why, if a link got added, it would be from the wayback machine or AG Archive.

2019-12-25 00:28:46

I say yes. If people want to use it, that's their prerogative. Encourage people to switch to something better? Sure, I can go with that. Stop people from being able to make that choice for themselves and delete everything about it to insure it's completely lost to time? No, not cool.

For what it's worth, we've restored BGT to the Audiogames Archive, though we've added a larger than usual notice that it's unsupported software and maintained for historical purposes only.

What choice? It's not a choice anymore, you don't use languages which are not maintained for new projects and which can start being incompatible at any point, and when that happens, boom  all your 1000 lines of code are lost, they don't work anymore. Who's fault is it then? It's a different choice if you already have an established game in BGT like CP or Manamon, even then you should start to think about porting if you plan to keep working on the game, but then you can't just stop using BGT. New developers though, there's no reason to do it.

2019-12-25 16:05:21

@14 Except it's not deleted everywhere. That's not the question here. I vote no, because hardcore BGT fans can still find it somewhere, while new developers don't see it and think: Oh that's cool. I will forever use BGT. Fact is, BGT is no longer supported and won't work forever. I would be more pissed if BGT code I wrote suddenly would stop working on newer systems, than just learning a more modern programming language.

By you folks telling us not to use BGT your infringing on our right to choose and frankly that’s a bad thing. We can decide to program with whatever language we want and you can’t stop us because BGT was sorta unsupported for a while

2019-12-25 18:49:40

We're not preventing you from using BGT. We just tell you why it's not a good idea, and by doing this we don't infringe on your choice making at all. What I don't like is trying to hammer home the point at any oportunity, for example if one person just asks how to do this in BGT, but in topics clearly dedicated to discussing this, I think it's important to try to convince people.

Nobody is stopping you to do anything, stop with those silly sentences because nobody can stop you to install a virus on your computer if you want. However, we are pointing out facts. If you don't like them, you can choose to ignore them. People just don't want new games which are potentially amazing, yet stop working in the future because they are written in a language no longer supported by it's creator. You would be angry yourself if your code just stopped working, and you spent months debugging it. You can play unsupported games all you want, that does no harm and can't give you issues other then not being able to run them, but you really should not code in unsupported languages. Notice we all say you should not, we are not hacking your computer and deleting BGT from it to stop you from making a choice. So your argument has no logic.

2019-12-27 02:49:12

@15 why it even remove there? As i understand is agarchive for hosting abandonware.

2019-12-27 10:52:17 (edited by Slender 2019-12-27 11:00:50)

Because it's more software than game. If software is available from the original developer, it's generally not eligible for inclusion on the archive. We restored it because it was officially taken off of Blastbay's site, and it does have some historical interest because it powered many games and there's a decent amount of BGT source code floating around.
