Aaron, we will want to be careful with this.
Mentioning that you can google how to set up x, or that it's available, is safe enough.
Mentioning that you can go to this site (providing a link) and then writing a detailed guide...something like that, particularly if it's a topic that keeps bobbing to the surface, may attract negative attention and is not a good thing.

You can absolutely say. this is what Mame does, and this is how to configure it, but giving links to roms is the issue. the software itself is not the illegal part. It's the dumps of the system data that cross those lines.

So where exactly is the line. E.G: if I make a GTA clone for the blind that's advertised as such, is that okay as long as I don't use stolen resources?
I'm sorry that this is my third post on this, but I want to make sure we're all on exactly the same page here about what will and won't be allowed. If you could use examples, that would be great.

2019-07-09 01:10:39

Alright. Example time.

Jayde posts a forum topic on this awesome ps2 game he found out about. he talks about how amazingly accessible it is, and leaves it there. That's fine.

Jayde posts a forum topic about how great Mortal Kombat Special forces for the ps1 is. he goes on to tell everyone that they can download the rom at such and such a link and invites everyone to download. That is not okay. First because Special Forces was an awful game. More importantly though. he is linking to an illegal download directly.

Jayde wonders how to get his hands on the Battle Arena Toshinden 3 soundtrack. Ironcross32 suggests checking Amazon and Ebay. This is obviously fine.

Jayde wants to find some audio described movies he can watch while he researches more big words he can use on the forum to adumbrate his points with more clarity. Defender suggests www dot super illegal movie downloads for free dot com and tells Jayde about how they have all these great movies for download including the dirty ones. naturally Jayde is beside himself as finally his ardent and truly voracious appetite for elicit cinema can be actualized. Once we get done decoding what he's trying to say, this is what would probably happen. Defender would get a warning for linking to this source of material, and Jayde would be asked to use smaller words like I, and, and the.

Finally. Jayde has taken it upon himself to attempt to create a game called Crazy Potty. it's a game which consists of 250 bathroom themed minigames. the music is from Battle Arena Toshinden 3, and the sounds are borrowed from MK Special forces. The staff would take a collective look at this and ask a number of questions. Mainly we'd want to know if Jayde was attempting to be financially compensated from this work. If not, it would most likely not be touched, but if so it would open up some other avenues we'd have to look in to as staff. if it turned out he was using stolen assets and was attempting to augment his bank account, there is a good chance we would ask him to remove it from the forum.

Yeah, okay, this really helped. Thanks. It was also fun to read.
P.S: if this were the stance from the get go I think there would have been a lot less pushback, so maybe we can all keep that in mind for next time. We already have few games as is, losing a game like crazy party scares people.

I fully agree with you. I apologize for being absent for a while. I would have written this up much sooner and we could have avoided a lot of what we all went through here.
Like it or not, you are all stuck with me.

@356, damn straight. It's not about supporting illegal assets, or gloating about doing the same, not if you're a decent human being. It's about the fact that, no matter your moral stance on such things, games like Crazy Party, Beatstar, Rhythm Rage, and a host of others which are known to use copyrighted sounds, are some of the most well-designed games we have. Again, if you really wanted to, you could argue about what that says about the community at large, but the fact of the matter is that if you take those away, you're going to have a flood of clones and mind-numbingly simple games written by kids to take their place. At that point, the mods would be playing a game of Wackamole, desperately trying to bat away all the stale concepts and stolen code. We really, REALLY don't want that, but that would be exactly the sort of future I'd forsee for this place if a hardline stance were to be taken.

Like it or not, no matter how much drama has been infesting this place as of late, this is the place where people go to learn about audio games. How do you think it would look if someone unfamiliar with the scene comes here, and has to look down a list of dozens of blacklisted games so that they don't accidentally talk about the wrong thing for fear of punishment? Because, let's face it, if such a system were to come into effect, there would have to be such a list that people would have to look at before they signed up, since there are other sources which list currently available audio games out there, so if someone claimed innocence, that claim could easily be shot down, and the person would be punished.

In summary: people get defensive about the audio games they love because, frankly, we just don't have the vast array of choices that sighted people do. This is, I hope, not coming off as an entitled stance, since I'm well aware that, depending on how much effort one chooses to put into it, there are games which are made for the sighted which we can play. However, there are just as many that we can't, so we do tend to fall back on audio games. If we end up getting inundated with games like Glass Breaker and Beyond the Bullet and God knows what else out of frustration that all the good games can no longer be spoken of, that is arguably worse than the current climate.

The glass is neither half empty nor half full. It's just holding half the amount it can potentially hold.

efully agree with you, turtlepower17. CP is one of those games that is really good, and I personally feal that, if you change the sounds and music, it would just ruin the gameplay. I guess noone realised that CP is A fangame, with A few bels and wistles here and there. And one of the best and first! and you could try to put me down, but I do what I do because I love helping those who never had access to them like me, or for those who just really want to get into mainstreme gaming. It's not that we are bad humans by doing this, and believe it or not, when we do this, we are actualy being a comunity. helping each other out with guides and links. I don't want you leegalists to yel at me, but I would like you just to give me one, just one more weak please, look at that topic. Don't you see us all helping each other there? Did you see any dromma? I would like for us to at least help one another even if only by PM. With respect, Juan Noel Reina

So where does this leave classics like the game Duck Hunt that Liam made all those years ago?

I found myself playing it the other day, so I thought I'd visit the l-works site and see if it was still up there.

It's classed as abandonware, but it still works quite well for killing some ducks.

Crazy Potty needs to be a thing now. big_smile

2019-07-09 19:53:44

Well We should flush out an idea and see if we can make Crazy Potty. I'd hate to see it tank though. Imagine. All the work down the crapper. Maybe someone will be brave and take the plunge?

Another thing to consider, links to dumps of the system firmware should also be removed, since dumping BIOS from PS2 original playstation etc. is technically illegal but without it, the emulator isn't able to run the games.
