Hi.
I have read about Wear OS, which is Googles operating system for Smart watches. I would like to hear if any of you have experiences with this system, and if it works great or not.
How much can you do on the Watch compared to the Apple watch? What useful and cool apps have you installed on your Watch?
I feel like trying something new, and I have looked at the Ticwatch Pro which sounds like the best watch for now, which have a speaker.
Does Wear OS have the tactil time like the Apple Watch, where the watch vibrates the time instead of speaking it? I'm using this feature every day on my Apple watch so I don't disturb other people.
I hope to hear from you if you have any experiences with those watches.

Best regards SLJ.

I do not know much about this system, the only thing I know for a fact is that Samsung watches are pretty damn accessible.
Btw, I just freaking love that scrolling wheel, even I can not aford one of these at the moment, I had good experiences with them, a friend of mine has the gear S3 and it still rocks.

Hi.
Yeah, according to the manual, the Samsung watch is very accessible just like the Apple Watch. But, the watch from Samsung is running Samsungs own system, not Googles Wear OS. But it should work pretty good.
Edit:
I just found this amazing review of one of the Samsung Smart watches, but I was more looking for reviews of watches running Wear OS:

this has been brought up before rather recently, and even though I made some questions and points to keep the conversation going in a hopefully interesting way, as usual, no one even bothered

Well yeah, I was gonna point to the link provided by SLJ, the thing is amazing, not sure if you can have tactile watch enabled, but who knows.

Hi.
@UltraLeetJ:
I don't think many people have experiences with the things you're asking for in the other topic.
Regarding the Fitbit bands: I have not tried those, but as far as I know, they don't have any speaker. The app could be more accessible from what I have read.
The fitness on the Apple Watch is fully accessible. You can buy the Apple watch 3. gen quite cheep if you don't want the latest gen.
From what I have read but not tried: Both the fitness features in the Samsung Galaxy Watch, which runs Samsungs own system, and the fitness features in Wear OS are fully accessible as well.
@Angel: Yes the Samsung watch have the tactile feature as well. I'm not sure about the watches which runs Wear OS though.
Regarding Android in generel: It's a shame that there is no public forum like the Applevis forum. I'm already on too many email lists, so I don't wanna subscribe to yet an other huge mailinglist, unless I really have to. Most websites which covers Android accessibility haven't been updated for more than one year. So it's very difficult to find any up to date information regarding accessibility.

Best regards SLJ.

I am currently waring the galaxy watch, and i love it!
You can have tactile time.
Any accessibility questions with android, go to either me, on this forum, or my friend evan starnes on youtube, blind tech world. I'm on that channel as well.

Hi.
@Ty: Thank you very much. I will get some Android questions in the future.
Regarding smart watches: Is there any reason for you got the Samsung watch which doesn't run Wear OS but Samsungs own operating system? Wouldn't it be cool to have a Wear OS watch instead?
The Blind tech world you mention, is it this channel?

It hasn't been updated for one year and I don't find any Android related stuff there.

Best regards SLJ.

I recently purchased the Samsung gear s3 frontier. And are enjoying the pleasures of its accessible features.
As somebody mentioned above the spinning bezel they call the gear is very therapeutic to spin lol.
I charged mine every 3 days that includes a good amount of use making calls playing music doing workouts Etc.

Also loving how easy and accessible it is to change their watch bands to whatever you like which is compatible, I think I went a bit overboard with the watch bands as I have multiple colours in silicone and multiple coloured metal bracelets.
You can compliments any colour watch band you pick by selecting one of the thousands of different watch faces, which can give it a feel & look of a new watch.

only problem I have had with the watch is certain apps don't want to work while accessibility is turned on and wish it had Google assistant.
P. S I am using a razer phone with the compatible app link to it.

I am really thinking to purchase one of the Samsung ones just because the only android phone that I have and is not Samsung is a Nokia 3 and that is not going to change any time soon.
I do not have a problem with wear os, I am just used to that Samsung interface.
I had a 5 dollar smart watch, a DZ09, the one with the home button acting as power too, there are multiple variants of almost the same thing, but it had no speech, I could play music and stuff, but just no.
I ended up selling it for almost 20 dollars, a great profit for me.
If I ever want to familiarize with one of these more, my mother got almost the same model, it still says DZ09, but it has the button on the side, a touch home button and much better speaker.

@sirpdex and Angel: Thanks for some interesting replies. Seems like not many people have experience with Wear OS. I might buy a watch to check it out.

Best regards SLJ.

The reason I did not test any is because, 1. none of my friends have it and 2. the people at the tech stores do not let you activate talk back, even on phones.
And like TY said, you can count on me if you need any answers regarding android, I am really glad to help a potentialy new person in the android comunity.
smile I could try and find a cheap wear os watch on blindbst, or on eBay, something with a speaker, but I do not want to invest into an used one because personaly I do not want to buy it and not use it for much.
You can try that though if you are really interested in wear os only, or you could just go with a Samsung which I know for a fact it works with an Iphone too.

No, that's not it, slj
I'll post the link in a second.
We don't do a lot of android videos, but we both have used android for at least 4 years.
I got the galaxy watch for the main reason that it has dark screen, a built in hourly chime, it doesn't play the sound from your phone threw it, it uses the watches own tts, the app is nice and accessible, it can even work with an iphone, if, for some reason, you want a watch to pare with an iphone. Functionality it quite limited when you do that, but it's doable.

Hi.
Lol Ty: That was exactly the link I posted. big_smile
Regarding smart watches: A Wear OS watch can be pared with an iPhone as well. There is even a Wear OS app to administrate the watch, and it is accessible. So I don't really see the difference between a Wear OS watch and the Samsung Watch, especially if you wanna go Android full time.
Because no one seem to have tested it, I'll get a Wear OS watch in the near future.

Best regards SLJ.

Not a bad idea SLJ, if you get one, you can make a review on it and show us your thoughts, cause you are a good reviewer, in my opinion.
I mean, see the X-box guide, it is cool.

thanks for this! I was really close to buying some watches.. but when reading many many reviews no one decided on anything, so that discouraged me too, and then everyone goes from this is a really nice tracking watch to .. this watch is more for doing things outside your phone than for exercising..
or just the opposite, too. That drives me nuts and ultimately makes me not want to invest in any watches until things are more .. mm, stable?

@Angel: Thank you very much.
@UltraLeetJ: If you would consider an Apple Watch, I think you can get most of your questions answered on AppleVis, or just by reading reviews and comments on the forum.

I've heard they are bulky, and I have a very small wrist. I've also heard the screen readers tend to act weird. I won't be getting one, but that's mainly because I have an iPhone and my wrist is too small for a big watch. That's why I like the Apple Watch, that plus no pins in the bands. Those things always come loose on me.

I just got a Smartwatch from a friend who didn't use it anymore, so he gave it to me, but I need a charger.

I don't know anything about it; I just know it cost 60 euros in Germany. I don't even know what model it is. It isn't for sure Samsung as there's no logo on it. Assuming it cost 60 euros, I am guessing it is good. smile

2019-05-20 14:15:56

uh,,, 60 euros is relatively inexpensive hopefully you will figure out the model and get a charger. A friend has a polar sport watch. Its really expensive but apparently it is the ultimate fit tracker and stuff, I think it has no screen reading capabilities but I would have to see if I can get my hands on it temporarily at some point
