it's sad. I didn't wana give up using that cool platform. I talk with my friend Madeline there, and other people as well. it had alot of potential befor they fucked me with shift key. Daaaaaaaaaaaam you discord!
Hi!
In my experience, the best way to use discord is via the desktop app. I've just started a new campaign with some friends and I made the rong choice of letting them vote between hangout an discord. I can understand why they prefer discord, there's a bot to play music directly from youtube and it has some other cool stuff, but it's so frustrating! And, as you've already said, I don't think it would be difficult to make it completely accessible.
As a side note, I'd really like quentin's playroom to have a voice chat feature. It would make everything easyer and it already has the dice roller feature. Not asking to implement it or anything, it's just a small dream.
Actually, they're going to substitute the classic hangout with a new suite of apps, as I understand from this link
https://www.theverge.com/2019/1/22/1819 … -chat-meet
Hope they'll be accessible.
lmao hipster companies don't give a damn about accessibility until the fines are being filed. They act like that with every other responsibility they have. A few years ago I tried to open a ticket and offer my assistance but it was just ignored. funny to see they still are dragging their feet. Oh so predictable.
Fun fact, did you know that the people who run discord are totally fine with people posting pictures of underage furry porn? It's actually explicitly ignored in the rules, there was a huge firestorm about it a few months ago. Furry pedos man. If we could have an accessible, decentralized alternative to discord that'd be rad.
There are only a few that stand out, but yes, once they get their heads around CVAA, and figure out the bare minimum the law requires, that's what they'll do.
@20
"The FCC really aren't the good guys here swooping down and stomping out injustices with their capes on."
Correct. The US government (by broad bipartisant agreement) enacted legislation to protect your rights, and told the FCC they had to put themselves at your disposal as a tool for you to use when enforcing your own rights.
So if you encounter an issue with a communucaton service and why to see it resolved the FCC are obliged to help you get it resolved.
So it really doesn't matter at all whether you like the FCC or not, they're simply a tool available for you to use. As you've discovered yourself, an individual contacting a corporation carried way less weight than a government body contacting a corporation.
I've actually used the Windows Desktop application for almost a year now. I stopped using it for a while though and just reinstalled it recently, and the only thing that bugs me really is the fact that when keys are pressed, it automatically jumps to the message edit field. I've tried to look for an option to disable that, but nothing seemed to work out. Has anyone found a way around this? I don't use it for gaming at all, so I've never really looked into a lot of the features. For just text chatting on various servers and adding/messaging friends, it worked fine for me. (until recently) The IOS app is a headache to fumble through, but I've even used it for some time as well.
yeah that shift thing is annoying as hell, I get why they do it so you can just start typing and its in the box. I even see practical uses, like if you have SLI over 3 monitors or something and moving your mouse across to the right one takes so much time or something. But for us, it's annoying and there's only so much we can do on our end to mitigate it.
hi,
so I made a reddit post about there accessibility in there subreddit r/discordapp and a product designer from discord commented.
check it out:
https://www.reddit.com/r/discordapp/com … ty_please/
also reply to his comments to give him suggestions on how to improve there accessibility. He also said they had a small accessibility team working on features.
It would be interesting to see what happens in the future.
I'm looking through it now, I added a comment, I'll read the rest of the comments there. The one thing I will say is that posting with a heavy accusatory tone and swearing is not the way to talk to developers. If you pulled that little trick with someone working on their own project, i.e. an indie developer, you'd either get no response, or get told to fuck off most likely. I know it's frustrating, I ranted in here earlier, but the chances of Discord devs being in here are virtually nil. You really want to be putting your best foot forward when writing to developers about accessibility, or really anything. You need to be polite, and constructive in your feedback.
For better or worse though, they are responding, I saw the one staff response, so that's good at least. I just hope in the future you keep that in mind because maybe it might turn other devs off to working on this and that would affect all of us, not just you.
maybe... but doubtful any Discord ones do, at any rate, a forum isn't directly addressing them so...
That was a statement rather than a theory, devs 100% do come here
It's always best to assume others are reading.
well, ya know, people have to have a place to vent ya know, they wanna play their BS games about saying their doing shit and then not doing it time and time again, tough shit. There's a difference though in going right on their subreddit and using that tone and doing it here though.
for real.
Sounds like 5 totally flew off the handle there.
I got it to mostly work on my android phone but I don't have anyone else to test it with.
Apparently there are bots that enable you to play pokemon in text form but I can't seem to add it to my group.
just a quick update. as of today discord has been trying to improve accessibility by labeling buttons.
am i imagining things or discord really fixed there shit and we can now navigate without the edit box stealing focus?
This is good news. i use discord a lot.
@hadi.gsf no, you haven't lost your shit.
But for me, because I've gotten use to it, pressing the escape key, when I'm in a chat window puts me into the edit field, which for me is actually nice, because if I'm reading long up in the history, I'll automatically put me back down and into the edit field, ready to type a message
Can confirm that Discord's user experience on desktop is certainly improved, though it's still not flawless as yet.
I haven't used Discord a whole bunch lately, but i can confirm buttons are now labeled. I can't yet confirm that the jumping to the message box thing is fixed, since I haven't really used it much lately like I said, but I'll be darn glad if it is.
One thing I've noticed though is that when I try to navigate around, it still jumps to the "Where would you like to go?" box, and I have to keep pressing control K to dismiss it. As a result, I can only really go to my friends list with NVDA's object review or document review functions. Trying to arrow to it in browse mode keeps popping up the "Where do you want to go?" thing which I'm guessing is the quick switcher.
Any tips to work around that, or will I have to use document review or something? Thanks!
@48 I'd strongly recommend getting in touch with those people on Reddit to get it fixed rather than trying to figure out workarounds... Whatever the motivation, they're clearly interested in getting it working well
