note: For ease of navigation, this post is laid out by headings at level 5 (blame BBCode not me). Thus, if you're wishing to get to other posts, skip to the next heading at level 3 by pressing the 3 key with most screen readers. Apologies for the inconvenience, I went back and forth about how to best organize this post and ultimately chose the heading method.
Searching for high quality sounds/music for that upcoming project? Look no further!
This post aims to provide a frequently updated and concise collection of resources useful for anyone wishing to obtain high quality sounds or music with an emphasis on games/audiogames, but useful in other cases just as well. While many are freely available, cost is not at all a requirement. I've attempted to maintain a sort of kind of organizational structure, so finding all free content should be as easy as using your browsers find function and searching for "price: free".
Remember, it's important to give attribution where required. Many authors on this page have worked  hard in bringing all this content to the table, the least you can do is respect licensing. The info I've provided, while accurate at the time of this writing, isn't guaranteed to stay that way. When considering using stuff found here, it might be a good idea to periodically check back in case of changes.
Some links don't contain information on where content can be used, simply due to the fact that I couldn't find anything. They have been included here to give a wider array of options. I personally suggest getting in contact with the creator and if you wouldn't mind posting here. I'll try to make frequent updates, but if I take too long don't hesitate to reach out with info found in my profile.
Additions to this list are greatly appreciated. Every little bit helps! Keep in mind, this is designed to be a list of places from which to obtain content useful in productions, hence sites like getsounds.com with extremely low quality were and will be ignored. When giving suggestions or providing contributions, it would be nice if you could attempt to make my life a little bit easier by sticking to the format and providing as much info as possible, most notably where content can be used along with relevant license information. thanks in advance.

todo:

  • Better descriptions

  • categorization, I begun attempting this but as you can see it went to hell pretty quickly... Oops

There are a number of licenses commonly used here. They are listed below, along with a rather rough description. Consult the actual license for more information.

zero: Content is admited to the public domain. You can copy, distribute, whatever just so long as you don't claim you are the original author.

attribution: You are permitted to freely share, copy, and redistribute. However, you must give appropriate creddit, provide a link to the license, and tell if the content was modified.

attribution noncommercial: Same as attribution, but you are unable to use the content commercially - in any project that isn't completely free.

Free Sound

type: sounds

price: free (duh)

description: Freesound is probably the biggest resource for coming by a large variety of pretty much anything. Anyone is free to contribute, allowing the database to expand at a rapid rate. With that said, quantity does not always mean quality. Most of the content found here isn't exactly professionally ideal. When navigating, you might find it easier to search by specific and reputable users, tags, and packs as opposed to names/types of sounds.

licensing: various. the user is given the ability to select from a couple different creative commons licenses. At this time, zero(cc0), attribution (by), and attribution noncommercial (by-nc). This info is always listed on the respective page.

licensing: The adobe software license agreement. The gist is this. You may use, display, modify, reproduce, and distribute the associated Content File. You can't distribute sounds individually.

Some trippy alien sounds, along with some pretty awesome SciFi weapons, some kinda meh but still cool lightsabor recreations, some generator sounds, and a bunch of cool music stingers for logos. licensing: I've been looking around and there doesn't seem to be anything specifying restrictions, more importantly whether we're limited to only using these on youtube. There's nothing directly saying we can't so...

Josh Woodward

type: music

price: free

description: Music by Josh Woodward, a singer/song writer who's decided to give all his 200+ songs away for use anywhere. Interestingly, and in contrast to most other royalty free music sites listed here, quite a few of his tracks contain vocals. Not exactly ideal for games or podcasts but could work quite well for backgrounds.

licensing: creative commons attribution 4.0

Free to Use Sounds

type: sounds

price: Free for individual downloads, but you can pay ($10 or name your price) to get everything

description: A bunch of sounds recorded semi-professionally for usage across a variety of projects. Quality is hit and miss, and the download system could be better, but all in all good stuff that can't be beat given the price.

licensing: attribution for free downloads, though paying for one or all of the libraries eliminates this restriction. More info here.

The Match Maker Collection

type: sounds

price: free

description: They've got a mix of lower and higher quality sounds (though the LQ ones are seperated) and you'll need to use a browser like Chrome that autotranslates the page to use it but it's a pretty good resource! You might recognize a lot of these from games such as BK and Shadowline.

licensing: Attribution as far as I'm able to tell. There's an agreement page.

Made some updates to post 1. A ton of sites added and updated license info for a couple others. Most notably the BBC effects. Apparently you can't use them in anything but an educational environment which really blows, I never new this. In addition, when navigating freesound, you probably won't have a hope of weeding out  the really good stuff unless you follow users and tags. Huge thanks to Defender from Skype as well as everyone else who provided input/feedback in this topic and elsewhere. keep it coming!

I've been pretty busy lately, but considering changing the formatting. I recognize the heading approach might not be the best after all, since it has now become somewhat inconvenient and will only continue to do so as the list inevitably grows larger. suggestions?
My first thought was to simply remove each heading and keep links, but we'd be sacrificing quick, easy navigation which happened to be my inspiration for the current layout.

2019-03-27 07:47:09 (edited by defender 2019-03-27 15:47:02)

Thanks so much man I really appreciate it!
I only noticed two bigger problems, I checked all the links.
1. The no copyright sounds licensing link throws a 404, which is odd because it seems like the link is fine.
2. The youtube audio library section has no licensing part or heading.

As for the YAL I was confused about it's application off of youtube as well, which is why I didn't mention it. There is also a separate youtube music library I think.
At least the licensing is usually right there, but scrolling that thing gets crazy after a while and the searching aint great.

Running a spellcheck over my contributions may be a good idea as well big_smile

2019-04-03 19:20:33

@14, The licencing not being there is not a problem, it's good, because we have an excuse to break it.

Best regards
T-m

2019-04-04 04:18:33

Thanks for taking this on, Carter. You might consider adding audiojungle.net . I think it was part of the original list.

moderation:
Tmstuff000, this is not the first time you've expressed not only a wish but willingness to crack games or evade licensing. Be it begging for someone to hand you a silver dollar crack (directly against the rules) or outright condoning piracy by wanting to freely obtain paid sound libraries (also against the rules). Your actions are in direct opposition to the set of ideals we wish to uphold here on the forum.
You've received many warnings which have seemingly had zero effect, most particularly one from Sebby on the 1st of November back in 2018 that essentially said you were almost there.

Sebby wrote:

MODERATION:
@tmstuff000 remember, you're on your last warning before you get a ban.  You are free to hold your opinion about cracking games, but not, on this forum, to distribute or discuss them.

After that, you proceeded to receive cautions. This was before we really began administrating by our new set of rules however, and cautions were thrown around quite a bit.
Ordinarily I wouldn't want to take action based on opinion alone, however there is nothing in your post that might suggest an opinion, "I am of the mind of", "IMHO", "I believe", etc. No, you say "we have an excuse to break it". You elude to the fact that you have knowledge on this subject which obviously isn't the case. I would rather not have the he said so fallacy possibly dictating, or influencing, the choices of present and future visitors here.

After a unanimous vote from nearly everyone on the team, including two administrators, I'm hereby invoking the community failure clause. While each and every substantial warning you've received has now expired, you've made it Chrystal clear that warnings don't seem to matter in your eyes. You're being banned for 60 days. Should you come back after the allotted time and continue, stricter action will be undertaken by myself and the rest of the team. It is my recommendation that you read over the rules and understand precisely, beyond the shadow of a doubt, where you went wrong. If you have questions, feel free to ask.

2019-04-06 01:13:36 (edited by defender 2019-04-07 05:25:16)

Thanks Carter, I can't stand it when people ignore attribution. The least we can do to show that we appreciate the hard work and time people take to bring us free music and sounds is to spread their name so they may get some more paying customers, and writing up credits is not difficult.  Without this simple back and forth exchange, most have no real incentive to provide such a service to the community, since they could be focusing their time elsewhere. Disrespecting the rules is like stealing money from the wallet of someone who just helped you pay for your lunch because you couldn't afford it.

Anyway, post 5 has several good resources, but I'd just like to add hollywood edge, and bluezone fx to that list.

Found the link to this on Morakuma's site
http://osabisi.sakura.ne.jp/m2/material3.html
It's got a mix of lower and higher quality sounds (though the LQ ones are seperated) and you'll need to use a browser like Chrome that autotranslates the page to use it but it's a pretty good resource!
It also has allot of sounds you will recognize from games like BK and Shadowline.
