Hello all. Recently I've heard people had issues with JGT, so perhaps this could be helpful for playing not only Japanese games, but pretty much anything in a language supported by Google translate. Note however that this addon is still under review, so bugs could happen, but as far as I have used it things have worked pretty well. Note also that the addon will cache every translation, thus it will not need to translate the same text multiple times. I'm not the author of the addon, just sharing it here since not many gamers seem to be subscribed to the addons mailing list. The author is Yannick PLASSIARD and you can download it from https://github.com/yplassiard/nvda-tran … nvda-addon
addon will automatically detect the language to translate from, and to use it press NVDA plus ctrl plus shift plus t to enable translation. At this point, the addon will translate everything not matching your NVDA language into your NVDA language. Note however that since requests are online, if you have a slower connection you could face some lag, so make sure you turn this on when you need to and turn it off once you are done. I'm not responsible for any crashes that could occur with slow connections, so make sure you know how to restart NVDA without speech in case something like that happens, but as long as your connection is decent you should be fine. Since september of 2019, the cache is saved after every translation. If you ever want to clear the cache, use NVDA ctrl shift f.

Are you able to put in your own translations like the instant translate addon?

What do you mean by your own translations? If you mean changing languages, at present no as it detects your NVDA language, but if you mean editing actual translations then that is probably not planned for now, but editing the cache might be possible.

is it something better than instent translate?

2019-03-14 23:52:28

It essentially uses the same API, but as I have described it will automatically translate each spoken text and thus is not for written communication like Instant translate where it would copy translations to the clipboard. A combination of both is what I use.

whether in the future, can we change the translation language? so it doesn't depend NVDA language.

2019-03-15 00:34:38

oh! That's good!. but I have a question. to be able to translate the documents there?for example the japanese txt documents. can it translate to english?

Very cool addon! Thanks!

I've been using this for a bit, and I saw the update which adds caching today. I use it quite a bit for understanding what is said in Crazy Party games that I host when people aren't speaking English, cuz I'm nosy like that, lol. In all seriousness, it's saved my butt on certain websites too when I didn't want Google to translate the entire page, I just needed to see what a specific link or button would do.

The glass is neither half empty nor half full. It's just holding half the amount it can potentially hold.

As far as I've read, it used Google Translate in the 2018.12 version, not sure if they've made it use Yandex now.

Instant translate is back to using Google translate API in recent versions. This addon uses Google translate from the start. Regarding the addons mailing list, I don't have a direct link right now but you should be able to find it on groups.io or on the NVDA addons website.

Will the addon updater detect new Versions of this addon?

2019-03-15 20:41:43

Once it is official, yes, but not yet. Soon it should be available on the site.

Lol, it seems I'm outdated, once more, like always. Apologies, for I thought it was still using Yandex

2019-03-15 23:29:17

No problem. Think the version is still development version, so not many people probably used it.

can you tell the author something, a thing about it: my friend was trying to translate it, but since half the message was in a different language, it didn't work. can you tell him/her to make it so that it scraps the smaller part of it that isn't in the language? so then there's only the message and it works properly.

I did try this addon. It is working incely. In this one some translations are better than JGT one.

The addon has been updated several times since this topic was created, so I have updated the link in the first post to point directly to the latest version. It adds offline caching support similar to the way JGT does it. To delete the cache if you ever need to, use NVDA ctrl shift f.

This thing should really be on the main NVDA add-ons site.  It's super useful, works quite well and is useful in many different applications and not just games.
