Hi.
Oh yea! Topic about Number stations!
Listening and searching the Number stations and other mystery/unique sw signals is my hobby.
I have own page about that, but it's in the big underconstruction:
http://dashradiorecordings.ugu.pl
Few years ago, Simon Mason had big archives with signals, texts informations and video clips about this stations but he's website unfortunatelly goes down in January of 2019.
I also remember other old websites of strange signals fans but 50 percent don't exist eg "mystery signals" http://www.apul64.dsl.pipex.com/.
Maybe it has been archived on http://archive.org?
If you want check the number stations schedule, you can wisit http://priyom.org. Sometimes you can find me on Priyom irc under name NightPurrer or PixelDash.
If someone want listen live the Number stations without a receiver EG Tecsun, in the internet exist much remote controlled receivers.
I recommend http://websdr.ewi.utwente.nl:8901/ or http://sdr.hu.
Teory about NS on the Wikipedia is wery outdated.
If anyone have questions about number stations, feel free to ask me, Slightly exaggerating, i can say that I am an expert about NS on this forum. big_smile

I've been interested in knowing weather the ITU or any government entity licences numbers stations to operate, or if it is like military stations. Some people think numbers stations are like encrypting messages, and the music is sort of a personalised ringtone to alert someone of a incoming message.
Maybe, if someone who was bored and had the appropriate rig, sent a brief transmission slightly above the MF band for AM and short wave broadcasts, or just at the bottom of the HF band.

Oh my God. I've been obsessed with "the numbers" for years. When I was like 12 and I first learned about numbers stations, I went wild, reading as much as I possibly could--how they work, where they come from, and what their purpose is in the first place. Awesome to know I'm not the only person on this forum who is obsessed with them.

Numbers stations are not licensed. They just broadcast, and sometimes they interfere with genuine radio communication as a result. Sure, government agencies know they exist, however according to an NPR piece, the FCC will work with the offending country if the transmission is affecting any other sort of communication, but otherwise the regulatory agencies usually turn a blind eye on the numbers stations.

As for your ringtone theory, that's sort of correct. The ringtone (interval signal) tells the listener what station they're listening to; it doesn't signify a particular recipient. The hedder of the message (the groups of numbers read out before the message begins) is theorised to contain some sort of agent ID.

Finally, yes, the messages are encrypted somehow, most likely with a one-time pad which is mathematically unbreakable.

Yep number stations are weird. My favourite is the one that plays that cool little ice cream truck tune.

Are you talking about this one?

Why would the FCC be the only government to work with the offending country? Unless it is seen as the number 1 government, which wouldn't be surprising considering how arrogant the United States is.

When I first read about them, I heard the Lincolnshire Poacher, which sounds a lot like the Lincolnshire Posy piece.

I never heard this part. Does it sound like an encrypted version of CW, AFSK or MFSK, or any developed form of digital data mode protocols? I listened to the one where you referenced an ice cream truck, but the ringtone kept playing after each set of numbers.

Many number stations return's after few years of inactivity.
Yes, some stations using digital modes eg. HM01.
This station is really strange. When it's on air, you can hear numbers and digital transmission.
After receive and decode the digital transmission, on your disc appear's txt files with numbers in the content.
Here's my recording from SDR:

If you all want me to, I can create a break down of a stereotypical numbers transmission without digital modes so you can both hear what they sound like and understand what they mean.
