Here it is: The Xbox One guide for blind and visually impaired people

Link:
https://forum.audiogames.net/post/405567/#p405567

Comments, both good and bad, all kinds of suggestions are very much welcome. My goal is to make this guide as great and useful as possible.

Original post, so you can see how all this started:

Hi.
I have thought about making a huge XBox guide for quite some time, but I'm not sure on how many who are interested in such guide. I'm not an XBox pro at all. There are many things I don't know about the console yet. Therefore, my plan is to let people contribute to the guide, and of course either mention people in the credits, or mention them in the guide itself, so you can see who have written the different parts of the guide.
Here is what I'm planning to include in the guide if people are interested:
How to setup the XBox from scratch, without any sighted help at all.
The controller: Basic layout, check the battery level and how to update your controller. Maybe the difference between the old and the new controllers, and a link to a great review of Microsofts expensive controller for hardcore gamers and disabled people, done by a blind gamer.
A section about headsets.
Narrator: Basic usage, virtual cursor, Narrator commands, maybe the settings and other relevant stuff.
The interface: I'm not sure on how much I'll include here, because there is a ton of stuff. Here are some ideas: Installing, uninstalling and managing games and apps. General overview of the interface. This part is tricky because there are so many ways to navigate in the system. Achievements and what's available in this area. A section about multiplayer: I don't know much about this yet. A section about the social area which is also game related.
I would also like to cover all the other parts of the accessible features of the XBox, which is not game related. Most people are using the console for gaming, but like the Playstation and properly other consoles, the XBox have many other features as well. Some of them are surprisingly accessible. I don't think a lot of people know much about those features and know that they are accessible, so it would be awesome to explore all this, and cover everything which is accessible so people can get the most out of their console.
I'm not sure on how to structure such huge guide. I will write it in the articles room here on the forum, and maybe also allow it to be published at other places as well. Ideas and thoughts are very much welcome. Are people willing to contribute with information and maybe help writing some of the sections in such guide? Are you even interested in this guide at all? Then please either give a thumps up, or leave a comment with your ideas and thoughts. This might turn into a great guide for gamers written by gamers...

Best regards SLJ.

I am interested in this and that is because I really wish I can get an xbox in the future.
And I have a suggestion, can you explain the touch thingy who covers a big part of the console?

Hi.
Thanks a lot for your interest. The only touch part is the on/off button and the eject button for the disk. I'll explain that in the guide for sure. This is very easy to use.

Thanks.
In your guide you can include some accessible games, free or paid on cd's, do not really know, I know that you are good at making reviews and guides, seeing your guide on the beat star pack maker and the review on Eco's of lebia.

Absolutely do this! This is a great idea and would serve as a good getting started read for new blind users to the Xbox.

Hi.
Thanks a lot for the interest and the positive comments. I'll start to write the basics of the guide as soon as possible.

Yeah this would be an excellent resource!
I just hope that other people help you out, so your not all on your own. This is an ambitious project...
I'd suggest using any communication methods you can to find other blind XBox players that could be interested in helping contribute.
And once you have a good framework, shop it around to any accessibility sites that you think might be interested too, CBT and BB for instance, and that could net you more assistance as well.
Good luck, and thank you very much for thinking of how to better the community!

@Defender:
Thanks a lot for all the positive words. All this is going to happen. It will take a lot of time, but I'll do my very best to include everything which fits in the category.
I will make it so everyone who wish to help making the guide will be able to do so. I already know some people who would love to help.
When I have something usable to share, I will communicate it out on Twitter, Facebook and other relevant places. When the guide is getting big with lots of useful content, I will share it with Microsoft to show them how much we love all the work they are putting into making the console accessible. I will also try to reach out to game companies to tell them we actually have an accessible console, and there are blind gamers out there. We just need more accessible and playable games.
I even have more things in mind, but I'll keep that as a surprise.
So, yeah, it is going to be huge, and hopefully great... big_smile

I think that this would be a awesome and helpful guide to everyone rather you are new or old to the system. I would love to get all of the controller commands for the web browser with Narritor.

2019-01-04 08:51:42

Hi.
First I thought about posting the guide in the articles room here on the forum. But that is quite limited when it comes to formating. Here on the forum, we can only use one level of headings, and I would like to make a guide with multiple heading levels, a table of con-tense etc. So the big question is:
Would you like a limited formated guide which will be harder to navigate which is easy to find here on the forum, or would you like me to make a better formated guide which is easy to navigate, hosted on my own website? I could of course make a post in the articles room which links to the full guide for easier finding, but I think that would be kind of crazy. big_smile

Hey, SLJ.

I think that would be a great idea. Are you going to explain the controller and keyboard commands for moving around the web browser Edge?

2019-01-04 17:06:54

Hi.
I'm going to explain the controller for sure.
I'm not sure about browsing the web, since I haven't found any special commands for doing that. It just works for me by using the arrow keys, or by using the Narrator mode, which I'll of course also explain in the guide.
If you know more about browsing the web on the XBox, then I would love to hear about it.

Best regards SLJ.

Hi.
Thanks for asking. I'm still working on the first part, and carefully thinking about how to organize the guide to make it as much flexible as possible for the future.
I will make a section in the guide where I list all the playable games for the Xbox. In that section, I will link to official material like walkthroughs or guides, which makes the games even more playable. Regarding to that, i'm currently working on a small guide for an awesome game I found, which is much more playable that I thought then I tried it the first times. i'm working on a small guide which will make you able to buy the game, pick it up and just play it right away just by following the guide. I will release that as a surprise for everyone, and I will show with this small guide how playable a game can be, if we have a great guide with all the information we need.
Because I will use that game guide in the games section of my Xbox guide, the Xbox guide takes more time than I had planned to get started. It would be better to have a Xbox guide which mentions playable games including sources with guides on how to play them, than having a guide explaining how to use a console without any playable games... smile
So, if everything is going as planned, I will write the guide for the game this weekend, and then concentrate on the Xbox game afterwards.

Best regards SLJ.

Hi SLJ

Thanks a lot for your work, and for charing this with others! that's great, I was thinking to buy a Xbox for a long time, and now with your help I'll seriously plan this ^^
Sory I can't help with the guide itself, since I'm a complete beginner regarding the console.
I look forward to read that anyway. About your question, in my opinion it'd be better to have the guide on your website, I agree it would make finding different sections easier.

best regards

Hi.
Thanks a lot for your kind words.
My website is not in English. So if I put up a blog post in English, then people will need a direct link. If that's not an issue, then I can do that for sure.

Hi.
Nah, I'm not sure that would be possible. I'm having the website together with a friend of mine. I spoke to him about it, and we came to the following solution:
First I'll make a gaming category in english, and send out a direct link to the guide. Then, you can click the english category to see the english content in the future.
Later on, we will make an english section on the site for easier navigation.

Hi
I have a Xbox one seam december, and I will read your guide.
Thanks for your work.

A litte commentary, you are inversed the key X and Y on the pad. X is at the left and Y at the up.

Hi SLJ!

I just red your guide, and like I said before, it'll greatly convince me to buy a Xbox 1! Seriously, it's great, and I hope with some hlep you'll be able to add more and more content. Keep the good work, and thanks a lot for sharing this with us!
I can't wait to read new sections ^^
