So my windows10 updated last night, I think it was a driver update and not a windows update as such. After restarting my sound was gone. I borrowed USB headphones from someone which works, but the intel hd audio driver isn't working at all. In device manager it's under other devices, and tells me "The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)". I've tried uninstalling it and restarting for windows to reinstall it, but it reappears in the same state. I've tried downloading the installer from both Intel and HP (this is an hp laptop), but in both cases the installer asks me to restart, and after doing so the driver is back in its broken state. Does anyone have advice? I'll probably need to buy some USB headphones of my own as I can't keep these indefinitely, but it would be nice to get the normal sound working again.

I had the same issue on my Dell laptop. I got someone to download and install the updated Dell audio drivers and I got my audio back.

you not alone. i had to re install from a back up. for it mest up my bluetooth stack and caused apple air pods to disconnect every few minutes. and broke the super fetch. service. removed it from the services list. so it could not be stopped. and kept it running even after it was set to disabled. had to dig in registry to disable prefetcher

There's a place for me in this universe.

turned out my problem was less sevear. it was actually triing to default to the headphone jack which was flat out busted so I had to disable it. Fortunatly, I have a pair of USB headphones just in case it rears it's uggly head again.

Zak, I don't know if you've managed to fix your issue yet, but here's something that may help. Apparently Microsoft has released an update that fixes the audio issues.

I managed to fix it with a system restore. Good to know it's safe to update again. Thanks for the suggestions.
