Ok, the file works fine for Dectalk 4.51 and 4.60, but with 4.41, I now get another error. Now, it says: Dictionary not found.
The folder contains the folowing files:
dectalk.dll
dtalk_us.dic
MSVCRTd.DLL
say.exe
speak.exe

Do I need an extra file, or what to do?

2018-06-12 13:09:29

For some reason you have to run that one as an administrator.

Oh no! Somebody released the h key! Everybody run and hide!

2018-06-12 14:35:14

I do, but it still says dictionary not found

2018-06-13 15:14:14

You're running using the run as administrator option when you right click?

Oh no! Somebody released the h key! Everybody run and hide!

2018-06-13 15:16:10

Yes. Tried boat with and without that.

2018-06-14 08:36:55

And you haven't deleted the dictionary file?

Oh no! Somebody released the h key! Everybody run and hide!

2018-06-14 08:44:55

No, I haven't.

I've now also tried to re-download the speak window, but with the same result.

2018-06-14 11:28:20

You could also try restarting your PC and running GWDEC32 again, I found that worked. Also try sending the contents of dtdic.log in the root of your c drive or in %userprofile%\appdata\Local\VirtualStore\dtdic.log.

Oh no! Somebody released the h key! Everybody run and hide!

I've tried restarting my PC, but that didn't work, so here is the complete content of my dtdic.log file. The first entre  is from may 13, but strange, Dectalk 4.41 isn't menchoned anywhere.

Hmm, try renaming the dictionary to DTALK_US.DIC.

Oh no! Somebody released the h key! Everybody run and hide!

2018-06-15 11:01:33

It's already called that.

2018-06-15 22:13:42

4.41 is broken beyond repair, that doesn't work in the NVDA version either. And apparently the first time you run GWDEC32, you've bricked 4.41. I mean I guess you could install the big one with SAPI and all that to give it dicts in the program files but... I don't know. I would really just recommend 4.3 or 4.60. To me 4.60 sounds just like 4.3 except when you set the breatiness to 100, 4.3 holds its nose, while 4.6 just has too much breath and is loud as fuck.

I also have 4.3 and 4.60, but I want all the Dectalk version I can get my hands on to compare them, and do some crazy things with them.

Hi,
I now have some questions about Dectalk and other, although I still haven't got Dectalk 4.41 speak window to work.

1. I reat somewhere on this forum, that Snoopi Botten has a version of SAPI 5 Dectalk on his site, that can sing, but I can only find that version that can't. Where on the site can I find the singing version?

2. Is it possible, somewhere on the internet, to buy a hardware version of Dectalk with version 4.2 or 4.3, that can work with a typical Windows 7 laptop, and what would it cost?

3. Is it possible to get a working software or hardware version of Stephen Hawking's Speech Plus Prose-2000 voice?

4. I hear samples of the Microsoft Whistler system with Mike and Mary from the Dectalk Archive, but is it still possible to get it work on Windows 7?

Thanks in advance.

I can only answer these questions, but I'm sure others can chine in.

2. Is it possible, somewhere on the internet, to buy a hardware version of Dectalk with version 4.2 or 4.3, that can work with a typical Windows 7 laptop, and what would it cost?
You mean the DECtalk Express? Those are pretty hard to come by these days on auction sites. I once saw a few listings on eBay, but they're gone now. Even if you DID manage to find one, you'd never know if it had version 4.2 or 4.61, since the newer DECtalk Express units shipped with Force Computers' DECtalk version 4.61, even though it is possible to downgrade the firmware back to version 4.2. Plus, you'd need a Serial to USB cable, since the DECtalk Express was meant to work with old PCs that have a Serial port. But, it does work on modern Windows, as I've read reports of users getting it to work under Windows 8 with JAWS.
3. Is it possible to get a working software or hardware version of Stephen Hawking's Speech Plus Prose-2000 voice?
There was an emulator version done recently, made to work on the Raspberry Pi, but as it stands now, we may never have access to it, only his family and the team who made it have access to it, even though there's an implementation built into MAME that doesn't even work. That said, the closest thing you'll get is using TruVoice.
4. I hear samples of the Microsoft Whistler system with Mike and Mary from the Dectalk Archive, but is it still possible to get it work on Windows 7?
That project was shelved before it was even released by Microsoft. Had it been released, it would've been a competitor of sorts to VocalWriter, even though there are rumors floating around that you can find it on the CD of certain Windows 2000 and XP distributions. Take that info with a grain of salt though.

2018-07-16 20:09:21

But what about the Dectalk USB thing you menchoned in post 3. What version is it using, and how does it work?

2018-07-16 20:27:51 (edited by Slender 2018-07-16 20:28:36)

I believe it's similar to the DECtalk Express, but newer and connected through USB, however it uses 4.6.1.

Oh no! Somebody released the h key! Everybody run and hide!

2018-07-16 20:33:25

The DECtalk USB is said to be using a heavily modified version of Fonix DECtalk 5.0. They modified the voices to sound as close to classic DECtalk as possible. There are two cables that it comes with, an RS/232 Serial cable and a USB cable, and there is a switch on the unit to switch between RS/232 and USB modes, though you'll only really need the RS/232 mode when using it with older machines that have that Serial port. In that mode, most applications will see it as a DECtalk Express. Note that it only changes the operation of the unit.
As for ordering it, you're looking at around $695 USD. However, unless you are comfortable ordering over the phone, I wouldn't get it.

2018-07-16 22:28:10

Ok. So i'll never ever get Dectalk USB.

But thanks for the replies.

Hi again,

Now, the Dectalk 4.41 speak window magicaly works, and I don't know what fixed it.
Maybe it was because I downloaded the Dectalk Access 32 for JAWS, that previewsly was on grossgang.com, through the Wayback Machine, and installed it.
The Dectalk Access 32 for JAWS doesn't work, but the Dectalk 4.41 speak window does work fine now, and it's good enough for me.

Do anyone know, where on theflameofhope.co I can get the beta SAPI 5 version of Dectalk, that can sing?

Hi again,

Now, I finally found out, what made the Dectalk 4.41 speak window to work, and I'm posting it here, if someone want to know.

You need to run gwdec32.exe from the same directory as the speak window is in. It is the only speak window, that needs the file in the same directory, so if you run gwdec32.exe from the 4.41 directory, you can still run 4.51 and 4.60.
You'll also need a few more files for the speak window to work, and an ini-file, that specifies, where the dictionary is.
I've created a zip-file with the speak window and all the needed files, but for the speak window to work, you'll need to run it in a folder on the roth of the harddrive called dectalk441, because it is what I've specified in the ini-file.

Download the zip/file here.

@familymario: Thanks for the link. It isn't the singing version, but never mind.

Another question:
Iam thinking of maybe buying a Dectalk Express unit, and get it to Work with my computer, but which software will I need to install, so it can process singing commands. Because I guess, that JAWS Blocks those commands.
I guess I can't save as wave-file, so I'll have to record it, but which software do I need for it to accept the comands?

Thanks in advance.

2018-07-18 19:56:31

Hi.
There is no speak window for the DECtalk Express. Instead, you had to use some kind of command line program that was provided on the DECtalk Express installation CD and send it the text file you want to make it sing, although you could probably use some kind of terminal program on modern Windows. Take that with a grain of salt though.
DECtalk USB is a bit similar, in that instead of using a command line program, you get a standard Windows interface with menus and whatnot, and to send it the text you want it to sing, you'd choose an option to send a text file to the unit, and you'd select your text file and the unit would do the rest.

2018-07-18 20:27:36

But what about that menchoned NVDA-addon, which can unlock commands. Would it Work? I have a NVDA-addon for Dectalk Express.
