Hello folks,
For over a year and a half, Nathan Tech have been running a, mostly,  successful text-based multi-user dungeon game called Cosmic Rage.
It got me to thinking. Not everyone probably likes space-themed, or fantasy-themed, or any other themed for that matter games.
Some people might want to just build, or socialise.
So I come to you, the users. I have had an idea of making an environment, not necessarily a game, but an environment that is unthemed.
It would be a mud, but would only have these features:
*several channels for you to talk on
*a forum
*a few cities, on which you can build your own houses[descriptions provided but customiseable]
*things to buy to place in your houses

And that's it.
No leveling up, no cash, no end goal.
Just a place to chat, build your dream home, and relax.
My question really is, is there any interest in this?
Do let me know!

Moderation!

While I can see why this was posted in the offtopic room, as you do mention custom descriptions and objects I'll move it to the general game discussion forum.

personally life sims haven't appealed to me as much, and so I confess this probably sounds less my sort of thing, since generally in muds and games for me it's the activities, quests, exploring etc first, and though I'm not against chatting a bit and actually quite like building things I probably  myself care for a game just with that intention.

But that is manifestly just me and others might feel differently.

hi, I would like such a thing, however it would be great if we were able to build our entirely own areas, not just homes, so you would have a central hub with a few things you can look at, then you can type a command to go to areas other player have built if they are public. You could type something like areas list to view all public accessible areas you can explore, areas search spaceship to get all the areas that feature a starship for example. If you do buy objects, you should also be able to give them custom names and descriptions so they can fit in whatever world you build. You should be able to privatize areas so only those you invite can go to it.

Well.. It would be almost like one of these old talker games..
I myself would be in favour of a life sim. I've always liked titles such as the sims, so it would really make my day.

One already exists. Someone created one because people wanted a destination to go to chat and build, but I forgot the info to it...

that's squid moo, and it requires knowledge of moo code from what I know.

It's just like any social MOO out there. SquidMOO, LambdaMOO, etc. If you want to make it though, go for it.

I would love it. And I have the feeling that you'll make things easier, so no coding would be required. You're planning to add something similar to the cosmic rage vehicles? We could make them cars, and the cosmic ones are amazing. Many people on CR created great items, so go on, I think it would be great. I'm here to support you, feel free to message me on twitter or facebook, I can throw ideas at you. I'm not on cosmic as much as I would like, But I'm here to give ideas!  Go for it!

Hi.
Hmm, this sounds like a neet little idea. One thing I am asking my self though is, what will the game provide us with and what availabilitys does the player have? so do we add custom room descriptions, custom items and so on or will the game provide things that we can work with like wall tiles, different surfaces, wall, objects and so on?

Hi, just as a FYI, there is already a mud that can do all of this developed, called Chat Mud. There is a soundpack for mushClient that is actively maintained. The mud is in semi-closed beta right now; when it goes out of beta the MOO core will be open-sourced.

Hi.
This doesn't sound like something I'd be interested in, but if you do make it, I'd be willing to give it a try.

Hmmm.
Well if it was an audio game, that allowed for everything from planet side things to space things that would rock.
I mean we are talking about full soundscapes here.
I'd be happy to pay 30 bucks for the thing, not a subscription though.
I don't know if I'd play this regularly, it would be something I came into, and chatted on or moved to a room for ambience, so I could say read my book on my pc or have some adventure but I don't know.
My issue with life sims is that when I go online I want to get away from my life which while for what it is is quite good, it could be better, and it has limits.
Games are my way outside reality, I don't need to play a crappy reality game of sorts because I allready have a semi life like that.
So it would have to be a bit more than real life.
I like the open world style though but if it was just me going here and there to do what I do I don't know if I'd play.

I honestly don't see the point, also, what would make it unique and something different than the other builder MUDs out there.

Not into life sims because I use gaming as my fictional media I enjoy experiencing/getting storytelling from and I always just think if I wanted to do all that I'd do it in real life.  So this isn't something I'd be interested in, and it doesn't sound like it would really last the test of time/have much replay value imo.

Hi.
I like the idea. How would you buy things for your house if you can't earn money? Sounds like there's already such thing in works called chat mud, but I don't know what it can do. I could see people being bored if there is nothing to do other than chat. Maybe some everyday activities.

Best regards SLJ.

hey folks
SEems fair enough.
Was just gauging interest. An audio game is a nice idea, as in converting it to audio rather than something else. So I'll bare it in mind.
Thanks!
