I just want to suggest a Mud quickly.
Edge of Creation is screen reader friendly, and a lot of fun. I wrote a long post about it Sunday, and when I tried to post, the site was down.
So for the time being, here's the connection info.

Hi Mirage! Whats so very special about this? I am in the arena and till now it looks similar to other muds.
OK, there is cooking, but thats it in case of crafting i think.

2017-12-09 15:14:14

It may not be all that different from others.
I just found it to be screen reader friendly, and it was one I hadn't heard mentioned on the site before.
So I thought I'd share. big_smile

I'm sitting here trying to figure out why dark legacy isn't worked on. I wonder if the admin got bored of it, the game can be great especially for crafting fans.

"Heroes aren’t always the ones who win. They’re the ones who lose, sometimes. But they keep fighting, they keep coming back. They don’t give up. That’s what makes them heroes."

2017-12-09 18:15:21

Okay I'm going to mention a rather odd entry here, but one which people will recognize if they saw the topic in new releases.
about a mud that I'm getting heavily into at the moment which is Flexible survival.

Firstly I will say up front the game  is very adult in theme, since the setting is an apocalyptic world over run with sex crazed mutants, thus occasionally your interactions with npcs or monsters can be somewhat extreme in nature, (particularly if you lose in combat), however if you can take that with a spoon full of salt there is a very good game and a very nice community here, and you can even limit some of the erotica from combat by taking certain perks such as "control freak", "cold fish" and "graceful in defeat"
Personally I tend to find the descriptions of being ravaged by a hermaphrodite Gryphon and then mutating to grow wings, blue fur, a beak, paws and both male and female genitals so overthetop and crazy they don't bother me too much, indeed I began trying out first the single player flexible survival rpg, then the mud to test out whether I was truly free of my genophobia, since in the past I found the single player game far too uncomfortable to play, but have stuck  with it and found some quite exceptional games in there.

The multiplayer game has extremely unique combat, but as per this topic Crafting is a major focus in the game with several crafting skills that can be raised. All in game items from weapons and armour to food, drugs and furniture must be built. This can be done with salvage which can be gained through battle or other methods. You then need a recipe for the item, and recipes for any other modifyers you want to add on to the item, as well as the necessary craft skills and salvage, for example to craft a drug you might need some skill in craft chemical and craft energy, and likewise some chemical and edible salvage, where as to craft a gun you'd need some skill in craft mechanical, a recipe and some .
common salvage. What is quite unique with crafting is that as well as the initial items, you can also craft  which give items different properties, for example if you have the recipe for the modifyer "miniturised" and add it onto an item, that item will take up less of your inventory space, while if you add the modifyer "Efficient" the item will take less energy in battle to use.
Also, on the web interface part of the game (which functions like a separate browser game in some ways and an extention to the mud in others), you can undertake what is called a crafting bounty, this is where you get told to make an item, and if  make it and have it in your inventory, you get rewarded.

finding recipes (as well as finding quests, npcs, different forms to mutate into etc  and exploring generally), is heavily encouraged, indeed you get rewarded for exploration as well as crafting.

For those not interested in combat or people wanting a change, Flexible survival  also has another quite unique system of advancement called jobs.
This is where you go to a city which people are attempting to rebuild  and use your characters' professions and skills to do various needed jobs. For instance characters with the job of Doctor, researcher or teacher might have the research skill, and one job available is scientist, looking through  scientific journals to try and find useful information to help rebuilding programs.
When you do a job, you do a dice roll vs your skill, and  if your successful get xp and such, as well as perhaps other items.

This is a system I really like, especially since it's a great way to advance and gives you the feeling your helping in the games' world. You can even do this through the games' web interface, which is great if you just want to quickly use some patrol points and get some xp, however imho it's more fun in the mud iteself since then you get to walk around and read descriptions.

Btw, though not part of this topic, the web interface actually makes the game almost function like a browser game in some respects since there are a few activities you can do to advance on the web, as well as some easy ways to train and add things to your character, you can even do something on the web at the same time your doing something else on the mud if you wish, which is freaky but fun. The web activities also tend to be more automated, indeed I'm fighting a monster in another browser window right now as I write this big_smile.

there is also fishing, mining  and animal racing as separate minigames not to mention farming.
In farming you spend a few turns harvesting and looking after crops and get paid for your time, but also need to prepare the soil etc, in mining you go to a dangerous area and mine to get salvage, and in animal racing you have a mutant racer who competes in races every day and who you can train or feed to increase their stats.
Actually, racing is pretty cool since you get a description of the race, who is in the lead, how your racer acts at obstacles etc.

In rp terms, the game does have roleplaying, some of which even awards characters with experience and such, however rp is not enforced for those who do not wish to. With the theme of the game some of this rp  is erotic in nature (though not all of it by any means), however I'm quite impressed at the way the game has a heavy amount of restrictions to avoid those who don't want to be involved in that sort of thing keeping out of it, ---- indeed the community I've found extremely friendly, very helpful, and not the least bit crass or lude.

The game even has a system where people can run judged scenes which effectively function like tabletop games in which a judge, acting as gm creates a scenario, and players can roll their various skills etc, as well as type out rp to get through it.

I've not tried this yet myself since I'm currently learning the game (and the web interface), so have enough to explore without getting heavily into rp, but it is something I may try in the future, ---- though i might leave the erotic side of things to others big_smile.

I do not think the game is like Hell moo from what I've heard, since the community are very helpful and friendly, your never forced into anything you don't  want to, and the hole ethos is generally a pleasant one, despite the chances of being ravaged by various mutated beasties if you lose in battle big_smile.

If Anyone is interested at giving the game a try you can sign up and create a web account here with this link and use your favourite mud client on flexiblesurvival.com port 2000.
Oh, and yes, the link to the web interface is my referal link, but hay!

Hello all, especialy dark. My problem was on Flexible Survival that in combat you see a huge line stating status effects like cold resistance and stuff, and found it annoying. Any tips on how to turn that off?

Hail, Daughter of Hatred. Creator of Sanctuary. Hail...Lilith.

@Arnold, since this is a general topic about crafting muds I suggest moving the discussion of Flexible survival's combat to the topic I created in new releases so I'll answer your question Over here

Btw Just thought I'd add a bit of threadcromancy to note that Alteraeon really is! becoming a crafting mud these days, they've just added cooking and have extended fishing to be a true minigame with hunting and trapping in the works for later.

Another mud is accursed lands. I wrote about it here: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.p … 61#p379161 More complex than lament, with a lot more to craft, even houses in the wilderness.

"Heroes aren’t always the ones who win. They’re the ones who lose, sometimes. But they keep fighting, they keep coming back. They don’t give up. That’s what makes them heroes."

2018-11-21 00:28:00

I updated the top post with Accursed Lands information, and will add Flexible Survival and other suggested Muds as I can.
Has anyone found any new Muds, especially those that have farming? That's the one area that seems to be lacking in many Muds.

2018-11-21 14:30:12 (edited by Dark 2018-11-21 14:34:31)

The main thing I see with farming, is that most muds with farming make it a comparatively short minigame as it is in 4dimensions or flexible survival, or make it a timed activity where you set something going then come back later as it is in  clok or cosmic rage.
The closest I've seen to active farming is gardening in four dimensions which has you need to pull weeds, water the plants and fight off things like birds and hungry goats, actually its pretty hectic,

I believe 3kingdoms has farming with a bit more detail to it and some puzzles, but that is one I still need to get into, likewise I want to get back to avalon at some stage and there are still some muds I need to try for the db which have good vi access like lensmoor and coffee mud.

Reviving this thread, because people still seem to be looking for good muds with cooking, farming, and such.
Alteraeon has really grown with its crafting systems. I am so impressed!
CoffeeMud has some crafting, although it seems basic compared to others I've discovered.
Sadly, although I loved Avalon, I think it has a lot of internal upheaval, so I'm not on there anymore.
Dartmud is one I'm trying to learn about right now, because looking at the wiki, it claims to have a huge and extensive crafting system.
BatMud and Ansellon Mud may have crafting, but I found their interfaces to be difficult. I don't know if it was Ascii art, or what was going on. It was really a shame about Ansellon, because I love the Dragonlance world and wanted in!
Unfortunately, some of the muds I posted about early on are gone.
So has anyone found anything new in the last year or so, regarding crafting muds?

2019-11-15 00:33:17

Although it will require a lot of work on your part, Cosmic Rage is one of the most extensive MUDs in everything. It has over 50 mainstream activities and dozens of things you can make from armor, to candles, to perfumes, to sculptures, to baskets, to bows, and all sorts of other things.

It's actually a space mud, and it does want you to act in-character as much as you can, but if you are willing to work at it, the crafting possibilities are pretty incredible.

2019-11-25 15:09:37

Just came across this thread and it's great! I get tired of ceaseless grinding advancement/combat so crafting Muds are perfect for me. I tried out Frandum a while ago but I'll give it another go - same with Clock. If I come across any more, I'll let you know!

2019-11-25 15:34:39

Always greatly appreciated.
I check out as many as I can, but there are always more. *smiles*

2019-11-26 05:07:13

Hi Mirage.
I still think you should update that great list with descriptions in the first posts so as to include muds like 4 dimensions, cosmic rage etc,  and maybe turn this into an article in the articles room since it's a great list.

2019-11-26 15:31:19

Didn't I update it?
I know I haven't put it in articles, but I thought I updated the top post to reflect those Muds that are gone, and also added the ones mentioned in the thread.

2019-11-26 15:33:01

Ok, I did add Cosmic Rage and Frandum, but for some reason 4 Dimensions is not in there.
I will go through this thread again, and see if I missed any others.
Sorry about that.

2019-11-26 15:59:28 (edited by Dark 2019-11-26 16:04:08)

Info on 4dimensions crafting can be found Here on the wiki
Also remember that to do crafting in 4d you need to complete quests, EG to cook you need to wander around and actually physically find ingredients, and I  mean just go into a wilderness and type forage or kill something and scan corpse, I mean literally find them like things in a quest, for instance, to get eggs you need to talk to people  find someone who tells you when their chickens lay and return at that time, and to get flour you need to physically grow the wheet yourself, then look on the bag to find instructions on where to find the mill etc.

Actually 4d has some of the most rewarding and in depth crafting I've seen, the one downer, is that as with much in 4D, its so obscure to actually find things or do things and the community isn't always as helpful as they could be.

There is also lensmore, though I still need to try that one myself, and I believe someone mentioned a mud called haven with a detailed crafting system.

Then of course these days I'd say Alteraeon is almost getting to be a crafting mud, or at least it was last time I played since the amount of stuff you can make is getting quite extensive.
As I said in post 80, there's also flexible survival, which oddly enough for a mud about post apocalyptic sex crazed mutants, has one of the most well developed and unique crafting systems I've seen which doesn't work quite like any other mud.;

First, you can craft pretty much anything in the game from clothing, to furniture to weapons and even pets, however to craft you need a recipe which can be bought, found, looted or otherwise acquired.
The recipe will call for so many salvage items. You can get salvage sometimes in combat, sometimes as presents or for completing missions, sometimes by mining or gathering in given areas, and sometimes even as rewards for roleplaying (really FS is the only game I've seen that has a tangible automated rp reward system).

You then put together your salvage and your recipe to build something, so to build a gun you would need a recipe and some ,  some mechanical or chemical salvage, the better the quality of your salvage  better the gun.
The cool thing however, is that recipes also come with modifyers. So if you add the modifyer "tiny" to a gun, it takes up less inventory space.

modifyers don't just involve combat items either, modifyers for clothing could dictate where to wear it,  how much salvage it takes to build.
If all that wasn't enough, the game then has crafting only bounties. You can find these on the web  basically, your given an order for an item and so long to fulfill it, get it right, you get xp and salvage and such.

As well as crafting, Flexible survival also has a lot of other none combat activities, including fishing, farming, raising mutant anaimals and racing them, and a really cool in game system whereby you can use character skills to complete jobs like rolling dice in a gamebook, indeed its possible to completely turn combat off in the game if you want and progress entirely through none combat actions and roleplaying, though you still will run into mutants from time to time and perhaps get infected.

Oh, and btw, the game has probably one of the nicest communities I've seen in any mud, as well as a host of very well   maintained guidelines and careful moderation for people to make clear   what level of eroticism people are comfortable with, if any.

All right Dark, I'm making progress.
I at least have a few posts from this thread in a Word document.
I'm going to start from there, and make it into an article.
No promises on how quickly it will be done, because I am checking out new Muds at the moment.
But at least I've started it.

2020-01-05 21:08:30

From what I read, but do not know,
The merchant system of Shattered Isles is a huge aspect of the world. All players regardless of class have the opportunity to learn gathering and crafting skills, allowing them to gather and trade materials, or craft them into something to be used or sold. New trade skills are unlocked by advancing related skills, such as learning Wood Carving from Wood Chopping. Additional trade skills can be learned from completing quests.
That's all it states. I think it sounds ok, ut never know.

i didn't know shattered isles had quests, I thought it was %100 rp focused.

that one is way to grindy for me, for example you have to forage 100 times to unlock the next skill, I even setup a trigger for it back then lol

@mirage, did you check out coremud? see this topic

It had a lot of really nice systems that I liked, in particular very detailed mining, item building  and lots of interesting quests.
I particularly liked how at higher levels you could specialise in one activity, EG engineering, mining or combat, and be slightly better at that thing, but not preclude yourself from doing either of the others.

It also really was a game that made me feel as if I were on an alien planet working for a mining company, with getting my own quarters etc.

Sadly, a lot of the game systems revolve around interaction and got changed to automate, which means economic interactions don't really pan out, EG I believe at one time you actually had to buy things from a human shopkeeper, but there's still a really interesting game in there all the same, with farming, building, quests, and of course lots and lots and lots of mining big_smile.

I never have checked that one out.
I try to get into space-oriented games, but I just can't seem to do it, and I have no idea why.
I'll keep it on my mind though, to try out in the future.
