I'm

wondering which file sharing programs, if any, you folks use for obtaining

music off the net and such. I find that many are inaccessible with Jaws.

What would be my best option, do you think?
I used to use Kazaa, but it's

full of spyware. *lol*

soulseek.

Well I find that accessibility isn't the problem. It's the fact that good

stuff is hard to find. Remember Audiogalaxy? That program rocked about three

years ago. I would reccomend newsgroups for good selection of music. The bit

torrent stuff is only good for new things. I haven't found any sites that

keep around old torrents.

Personally I prefer buying the stuff. I don't like risking viruses, and

prosecution is possible but less of a concern.

Just felt I had to mention

the virus risks, not trying to be a goody goody two shoes. If you're going

to chance it make sure your antivirus and firewall are as up to date as

possible.

If you can find torents I would suggest using bitpump found at

analogx.com.  It's quite accessible.  I don't usually download music

either and if I do it's over ftp.

i

know someone called samuel (no, not persenally, but on msn and stuff), and

he's cyberman on fc. we had a voice chat and he said he liked doctor who

and he had the old episodes on video. i said something about file sharing

programs, but he said that he did not want to take the risk. on an article

he read, he saw 100 lawsoots, including a 12 year old girl. so... i am not

surprised he does not want to take the risk... but surely.... do they mostly

look for US, if they are in the US? i mean, you wouldn't want to go to

england just to get a copyright infringer arrested.

The

companies only need an office here, which they will no doubt have. There

have been prosecutions here as well.

And I know of a relative, not a

particularly close one incidentally, who had their computer totally screwed

up as a result of viruses they got from file sharing.

Napster is pretty cool now I hear but it's not compatible with Windows 98,

which is what I have. Then again you pay for each song you download and you

can't burn them onto a CD. You'd need an Ipod. I'm curious how accessible

those are or if they can be adapted in any way. I wouldn't mind having one

myself. Right now the computer I'm using has a CD burner that's on the

blink, so I can't burn any of these MP3s I've downloaded.
  As for WinMX

it was pretty cool but apparently you can't download it anymore except by

doing a search. If you go to the official site it says the software's not

available anymore, so you have to find it second-hand. I bet they had to

discontinue it because of all the free music downloads and things and the

RIAA got wind of it just like they did with AudioGalaxy. Of course

AudioGalaxy's now Rhapsody and apparently the selection is excellent, but

it's no longer free and in any case it doesn't appear to be accessible to

JAWS. I tried it.

But wait, what's that? A transport! Saved am I! Hark, over here! Hey nonny non, please help!

Plus when you stop paying for Napster/Rapcity/etc you can no longer listen

to your music.  (there's a monthly subscription fee and you can download as

many songs as you want but no way is that worth it in my opinion)

I'm

guessing people moved on from Win MX because that software was being

specifically targetted with downloads tagged as being illegal planted there

by the music companies.
