Here's the problem.  I don't have an FTP server installed yet. I need to get Samba on it or something, and then set up user authentication so I can log into the FTP with my user name and password.
But the other problem is that I can't find the Ubuntu version on the Bearware DK site. I am using an Ubuntu V16 VPS on http://www.vps.net/

The Debian version should be fine. When downloading files from HTTP, use the built-in gnu wget
Also, for simple use you don't really need FTP, thanks to SFTP. You shouldn't have to do anything to set this up

Winscp is a good ftp/sftp/ssh client you can use. Explorer-like interface makes it easy to upload files to. Same login details you use to login via terminal.

Yeah, was gonna say that Ubuntu derives from Debian, so that's something nice to know. :-)
Also, you would need a startup script to make sure the server restarted in case the server ever rebooted.

@Green Gables Fan: I wil highly recommend you to get a Linux server on linode.com. It is much simpler and easier for newbies.

I've got a friend who is helping me out during their spare time. They are familiar with Ubuntu and SSH and SFTP, and although they never heard of VPS.net, they are interested in trying it out through my account.

Yes linode has many guides, but the same can be said for digitalocean and more. I fail to see how its better for newbies, still just the shell anyway.

ok so I just got myself a vps with 500gb banwidth per month, 20gb space and 512 mb ram nice and cheep. 25 bucks for a year. now I've no idea how to actually set up a teamtalk server on there. lol. all new to me. anybody got any simple guides? I'm using winSCP as a client for the vps which seems nice and screenreader friendly so far and is free. vps is set to windows x86 /x64.

What kind of operating system are you using, SirBadger? Perhaps I might be able to help you. You'll need to use command lines at some point, unless you want to do a lot of workarounds to avoid them.

The Dashboard is very accessible. They have everything set up for you, so you can do SSH and FTP to your server as soon as you have installed it. I tried an other service then I was totally new, and didn't found the guides very much helpful. They were pretty much geeky, and therefore I found the guides on Linode much easier to understand. Now, after having got some experience with Linux, I would be able to use other services. But for me, at leased, Linode was the way to go then I was new.

You're using a Windows server as your VPS? You will have to use remote Audio or NVDA remote, and install the Windows version of TeamTalk.

actually the vps is running centOS 6.5. I have no idea what that means. I think I picked the wrong one when I set it up. I think I can change it though.

ok sorry about multiple posts but I think I've got my head round this now. only question for now is does anybody know of a good piece of software for sending commands to the vps? I've tried the latest version of putty but it doesn't seem very screen reader friendly
