So I have a question about this. Youtube DL seems to be the new thing, but I haven't had any luck trying to get it to work as my computer doesn't seem to like it and believes it's a virus. I just want something that can download big playlists... and something that doesn't take an eternity to do it. If anone has tips or suggestions, that'd be reat. Youtube DL wouldn't be a bad idea, if I could get it to work with my computer... I just want something to download mp3s with.
the most accessible youtube downloader that I know of is one created specifically for blind people and with this feature in mind, pontes media downloader, I am not sure if it can download playlists though.

Pontes media downloader is effectively an accessible and customizable frontend for youtube dl and another convertion program, so yes it certainly can download playlists if you enable the checkbox to do so, just copy the playlist into the box for the youtube url.
There was one weerd point I had where it refused to convert to mp3 for a while, but either because the components it uses have been updated or because youtube is being more cooperative that seems to be fixed now.
Try youtube video download (YTD). it is also a good app. I used it. and it is accessible.
When you say using youtue-dl, are you referring to the command-line version? Or the one coded using wxpython? That can be found on github, its called youtube-dl GUI. You can either run it from source, compile it, or if you don't feel comfortable compiling it yourself, getting a binary from somewhere on the net, I imagine that won't be very hard. But, stick to trusted sites
I'l try pont's youtube downloader first, then youtube DL to see if I can get it to work better.
Ponce youtube downloader used to crash on my computer. So I removed it. I used to work with Free youtube to mp3 converter, however, that is not a full playlist downloader because it limits the downloads to 20, unless you are using the premium version.
Note: that is Free youtube to mp3 converter clasic, because the normal version is no longer accessible.

what i do to download a song or an mp3 file from youtube, is the following. this can be done on any device phone or computer.
step 1. go to youtube and coppy the link of the video that you want to be convirted.
step 2: go to www.youtube-mp3.org, and then remove all the info that is in the edit box and then paist the link.
step 3: klik on the convirt video button.
step 4: klik on the download video link.
note: you are able to hear what the length of the track is, and what the name of the track is.
i hope that this will help you a lot. it has no viruss and so on.
Afrim, even if you use the premium version, that program doesn't seem to be viable... the downloads take forever to happen, and when they do, you get duplicates and sometimes original unconverted m4a's.

There is also another site, but not sure if that one uses youtube-dl.
That last one isn't a bad site, cause it downloads playlists, but sadly, you can't resume your download like the first site.
It's odd that Free youtube to mp3 converter does this, because when I paste multiple videos, that never occurs. Perhaps the number is too large like 500, but not sure what to say since I've never tried the premium version. Another choice is to use YTD video downloader pro, but the problem here is that the engine of it first downloads the video, and then converts it. This is, time-consuming. But sure this will download as many videos as you wish.
Hmm. They usually aren't that big, I don't download anything more than about a hundred videos at a time. It just takes a long time... I don't now what the specific issue is. I'll have to check it again.

I've just installed the pontes media downloader on this windows 10 machine, it's updated to the latest version of youtube dl, and it's awesome.
What's the differents between youtube-dl gui and pontes media downloader?
Neither get regular updates, not counting youtube-dl, which is what the programs use in the background.
Pontes Media Downloader only lets you download one file at a time, unlike youtube-dl gui.
I suppose Pontes media downloader is good from an accessible standpoint, when youtube-dl gui has a few items unlabeled, I'm not sure what they are off the top of my head.
Pontes Media downloader crashes for me when I try to download playlists, and last I looked it only supports around 400 sites.
video-download.online supports a hell of a lot more sites, asuming they actually work.
It all boils down to preference.

Hmmm, Rather odd there cooltirk, Pontes is quite able to download playlists for me, I just enable the box to download playlists and copy playlist url into the right box, check the program preferences.
Pontes uses youtube dl, and yes does indeed update, use the "update download engine" in program options.
Actually I did once have it happen that downloads kept breaking on me until I updated the thing so obviously it does do some good.
As to preference, my mum adores! pontes downloader and is quite able to use it, which is good since unfortunately my mum chooses not to be computer literate.
It actually drives me a bit nuts, since she is far from stupid but she has decided that she is "too old" to learn and that I have "an aptitude" for computers which is how I know things.
Still she loves looking up things on YouTube and I was able to show her how to use pontes successfully, ---- at least until youtube and xp stopped cooperating.
as far as downloading whole playlists goes, pontes would crash when I tried that too, even with the checkbox. When I have to download such playlists, I generally use youtube-dl, cmd version, though I have previously messed with the gui version and I overall think it's a great utility. The only thing about youtube-dl and even it's gui counterpart that I don't necessarily like is what you have to do to get a custom output template, especially with cmd version if you don't specify an output template it defaults to the video name, dash, then the video ID, which is a royal pain. It ignores playlists and uploaders altogether.
For those who wish to use youtube-dl, cmd line or gui version, this is an output template that is designed to download a playlist.
%(uploader)s/%(playlist_name)s/%(title)s.%(ext)s
If you want to ignore the uploader's directory, remove the "%(uploader)s/" part.
Here's a quick command line example that will extract to the best possible audio format, as youtube has adaptive streams, as well as using my playlist output template earlier.
youtube-dl -x -o "%(uploader)s/%(playlist_name)s/%(title)s.%(ext)s" url
obviously replace url with your youtube URL, this template works for playlists only. To download individual videos you would use this command line.
youtube-dl -x -o "%(title)s" url
Please note: as the -x option extracts the best possible format, you will get format variety, anything from m4a to mp3 to ogg to opus. You don't usually see flac or vorbis.
To choose exactly what format it extracts to, I.E. mp3, you would use this in the middle of the command line before the link, with spaces on either side.
--audio-format filetype
where filetype is one of flac, mp3, m4a, vorbis, aac, opus, or wav.
For those who may not know, vorbis is ogg.
All this is only rellavent if you're using the command line version of youtube-dl, accept the output template stuff. You'll want to use options and output in the gui to set a custom output template to that. Also do note that the audio extractor requires ffmpeg and ffprobe, which you can find by googling "download ffmpeg windows binaries"

Do note that on some larger playlists the downloader might throw an error saying something about the site didn't respond in time, if it consistently throws this error on the same video in the playlist use the -i option to keep going if it encounters the error.
