Re: Introductions

Some time I should probably tell you about a certain discussion topic I found quite amusing on a Shadowrun tabletop forum regarding that topic. I can't go into details here for reasons that will be obvious when I say the name though, it was a character concept called the "spam".

Greetings vojta, glad your aboard, and hope you have fun on this forum from now on.

luckily we don't restrict membership to only those who say sensible things, ---- otherwise I'd have been kicked out the door a long time ago ;D.

Hi I am Neil and I work for a company producing dialogue tools for Game Developers.

I am new to the Games Industry and I'm hoping to bring some of my experience of scripting, casting and directing Dialogue to add in a small way to the overwhelming passion, talent and creativity I have already discovered here.

Cheers,

Re: Introductions

hello all, I'm not new to this place but i just rejoined, this is one of the first unions i got to know.
I play almost all types of games but my favorites are Silent Hill, Metal Gear Solid, Lost Odyssey, Shenmue...so on there are others but that's what on my mind at the moments, lets see if we can get this place to the way it was.

Re: Introductions

Hello, everyone!

I stumbled on this site a while back doing a random search to see if the concept of audio games was something that has been explored, and was delighted to see that it has been. I had an idea to start some kind of similar project back in college, to develop some kind of media experience for the visual impaired and blind,  but couldn't find enough people to do much with it.  It's a concept that really interests me.

As for me, I am a 27 year old gamer from the Southeastern US of A. I've been legally blind since birth due to congenital cataracts, and the surgery to correct them left me with very little usable vision. Paradoxically, though, I got quite good at reading computer displays, and am even quite good at digital graphics an 3D modeling (although my traditional drawing skills aren't all that good.) I've been a life long gamer, although I am mostly a fan of retro games and simpler graphics, as the graphics in newer games have began to challenge my limited vision more and more.  I'm mostly a fan of RPGs.  I previously worked for a major game developer's QA department. It was a fun job,  although the hours got rough near the end of projects.

I'm also a wanna be writer, and the idea of telling an interesting story in some kind of interactive media interests me greatly.  I am curious if anyone has looked into the new XNA Indie-game scene on Xbox Live, which allows independent teams to develop simple games and sell them online for the Xbox 360.  I think it would be an interesting game to bring audio gaming to the wold through a console platform.

Hmm, what else? I'm also a fan of entertainment from around the world, such as Japanese anime,  Hong Kong action films, British comedy and sci-fi, and random movies from allover the place. I donno, I've always had a nerdy interest in language and other cultures, which is why I think it's neat that this forum has so many people from all over the world on it.

Anyway, nice to meet everyone!

Re: Introductions

Hi Pa and welcome.

Interestingly enough, my first experiences with games have been slightly similar, ---- though i don't pretend to know anything about programming, much less 3D modeling. i do not have enough site to read normal text, but up until the 32 bit era I did find a fair number of normal games which i enjoyed playing.

I could not play rpgs or stratogy games due to the textual component, however I had a lot of fun with platformers, particularly large explortion type platform shooters such as Metroid,  the Turrican games, Mega man, and super castlevania on the Snes. I also of course played a fairfew beat em ups, both one on one like the mortal combat and streetfighter series, and 2D side scrolling like streets of rage or final fight.

Unfortunately though, with the release of the playstation I found the numnber of games I could play plummit, sinse I found the spacial relations in 3D games such as mario 64 and tomb raider far too complex for my vision to handle even when the graphics were visible to me.

for a long while I got rather stuck, then started on internet brouser based rpg games such as legend of thegreen dragon which i could play with Hal, ---- my screen reader of choice. These were fun to muck about with, but sinse I've never really been a fan of multiplayer competition and would rather just explore a world and ongoing plot, I found the very vast majority unsatisfactory.

On one game I was introduced to audio games and the rest is history.

As far as audio games themselves go, they roughly approximate the state of freeware and hobby developement games for the pc, in that they're made by a bunch of single developers and a few companies.

The genre range however is quite straggering, going from full on fps (which is what I started with), to more recently an rts stratogy game similar to warcraft, and a currently being released, first of it's kind audio rpg.

I'd deffinately recommend giving several a try, ---- just look in the database.

Alternatively, if you want  personal recommendation, i'd suggestion sound rts, the stratogy game, Entombed, --- the first ever full audio rpg curretly  about  just about to go into full release (see the news page for details), shades of doom, the  shooter, rail racer, a futuristic racing game with online play capabilities, Q9, a side scrolling platformer, and Alien outback, ---- a highly modified space invaders game with interesting sounds.

In truth there are many audio games worth checking out, these are just some suggestions for interesting and well presented offerings of a variety of genres.

Most audio games do not have graphics at all. Some, ---- like the above mentioned shades of doom and sound rts, have an optional minimalist graphical overview to get general environmental information (very minimalist indeed!), and two, ---- audio quake, an application to run the old quake game with speech and sound output, and terraformers, an experimental 3D adventure title have full graphical support.

Most though run on a blank screen basis and do everything with sterrio positioning  etc.

Sinse this forum is devoted to audio games, discussing playing graphical titles with low site isn't really appropriate here. I would however very much appreciate an exchange of views and possible links with you on the subject.

There was a topic about this on the forum at www.gameaccessibility.com, however I believe their site is currently suffering a malware attack. So, if  you'd like to drop me an E-mail regarding low vision as apposed to fully audio game access, ----- feel free.

My address is dark at x g a m dot org.

Hope you have fun on the forum and find audio games as interesting and rewarding to play as I have.

Re: Introductions

Welcome indeed.

The idea of audio games on a console would be most appealing, though I do have some concerns. I can't say with any certainty thatt these would or would not be major obstacles. First is the buying and loading of said games if bought through a system like you mentioned, with inaccessible menus. The second is the availability of good stereo fields since they're normally played through a TV. I'm not trying to discourage you, I just wonder how big a problem they would pose and how they might be overcome.

Re: Introductions

That's true, the 360 interface isn't the most accessible at the moment. Perhaps a cel phone of some kind would be a good alternate platform for audio based games. Portable, can be used with head phones,  the display or graphic abilities wouldn't be that important,  all you would need is a good tactile keyboard (So the iPhone or anything with a touch screen wouldn't be so good, but..)

I've just stated checking out a few audio games. I gave the accessible version of quake a spin, and think it's a really interesting concept. It totally drove a sighted friend of mine nuts though, go figure. smile

I used to be big on text adventures and MUDs back in the day, going all the way back to the good old dial-up BBS days. While screen readers make those accessible, I've also always been a fan of audio / radio drama, and think games that could make use of a good vocal performance instead of an automated voice would really add to the experience. I do like how the quality of video game voice dubbing has been improving in recent years. It's a shame that, at least in the US, the radio drama is a lost art, but at least other mediums are keeping voice acting alive.

I'll be sure to drop you a line, Dark, I understand video games are kinda off topic here, sorry, don't mean to wander off topic, I tend to do that.

Re: Introductions

If it was the noises that drove your friend nuts they can all be toggled in Audio Quake. Then again try having a sighted person try driving in top speed 2 lol, its hilarious... for us anyway.

If you like radio drama and you haven't already found them try www.darkerprojects.com Dark put me onto them about their Falcon Banner series and they do some pretty good stuff, particularly Byron.

Re: Introductions

Hi all!

I'm 13 years (young), but hope that I'm welcomed here. As you soon come to know is english not my first language, it is swedish. so I come from Sweden.

I live in Trollhättan, an small but nice town located in the landskape "Västra götaland".
My hobbies are:
Sitting and spent a real day in the front of the machine called computer.
Open the door for my dog (LOL), he jump at it now!
Playing drums and sometimes guitar, I'm study in music school and love it, but not the music lessons.
Tricks with sound files in a nice recording program.

I only can see 0.0003% on my right eye, and that because my doctors don't believe my mum she saying:

Re: Introductions

Quite alright on all accounts. I believe you are trying to say you sometimes use your condition to your advantage if that helps.

Re: Introductions

Hi,
Also, video games aren't off topic just as long as they might be playable. For instance sometimes we get a few questions about gaes consoles here. I even posted about games to look forward to at one stage, but it was me, cx2 and dark, and a couple other members taking part in that topic and it only lasted while the buzz of those games and the hype up occurred.

Re: Introductions

Hello...I'm JM, and I am new!

I live in Ontario, Canada. I"m twenty-nine, and not much of a gamer, but every now and then the bug strikes me and I become mildly obsessed for a while. My favourite things to enmesh myself in are text adventure games, MuDs and so on. I haven't really played anything in years and I'm hoping to find some interesting stuff and pointers here.

I'm heavily into music (especially when it's heavy or trippy!), literature, wandering, fine ale and beautiful women! I like people who can argue well and stimulate my synapses and nerve endings. I guess that's it for the moment! Cheers.

Re: Introductions

Welcome JM, I'm pretty certain you'll find something game wise on here. There's currently a good choice around so maybe you can tel us what you're looking for?

In terms of muds there are several fantasy games commonly played including Alter Aeon and Materia Magica. If you want PVP try Godwars 2, or if you want space sci fi try Miriani.

In terms of other games, as always you can do a lot worse than trying Entombed the first fully featured RPG in an audio game style.

Re: Introductions

hi,
welcome to the forum and website. i hope you enjoy your stay. what i will say here though, is that dark, cx2, and i, have simlar sences of humour. and dark's news posts really make me laugh a heck of a lot. so keep an eye out. also, depending on what sort of thing you're looking for there's quite a lot of stuff about. for instance, we just discovered some dos text adventures and such (thanks dark and bladestorm360 -- oops, i ope i got that username right.)

Re: Introductions

Hi nightspore and welcome.

Actually this is a good time to turn up on the forums with an interest in complex games.

You've already noted Eamon delux, then as Aaron said, there's the recently noted text rpgs thread which has suggestions in for interactive fiction games which play as rpgs.

Entombed is very much worth a look, ---- espcially with the dungeon creator in the works and all the new stuff which has been added recently.

There are then a fair few brouser games which range from pvp options to rpgs, psluss a mention must go to Smugglers 3 and 4, text based space combat games where you get to fly a spaceship around, higher crew, buy upgrades and take part in a galactic war.

One other personal interest of mine is Gamebooks, which you can find links to in the database, ---- and actually a new offering from the Chronicles of arborell is expected this week.

In general things have actually moved on a fair amount recently, and games just seem to be coming out all over the place!

Re: Introductions

What a nice forum this is..people actually read the introductions thread! lol Thanks for the welcome, guys.

I've taken a look at the games list and it is huge! I've already tried a few...had a hankering for shooting things and I found Judgment Day (stupid and awesome fun) and Technoshock (bloody difficult; I commend those Russians for making a serious 3-d style action game but designing it completely with audio in mind!). Entombed does look interesting and I think I will give it a try. Actually, Dark, you mentioned Fighting Fantasy on the news page, and that brings back interesting memories as well, since I had a friend in grade-school who was really obsessed with those books and we played them together. Always wondered what became of that series..I have a few of the paperbacks at home. smile

Re: Introductions

Yep, for our sins we read the intro thread, ---- though I must confess that's partly so that we can give spambots the boot fairly rapidly ;D.

Yep, the gameslist is huge, and is getting larger (there is stil a lot of stuff I need to add), pluss, for even more! accessible games take a look at www.pcsgames.net, who have a similar list to this site listing websites of accessible game devs, ---- probably easier if you want a general overview, though I will admit it's nice to know the entries are being of use.

For 3D action games, Technoshock really isn't your best intro, I'd personally recommend some of the games built with the Gma 3D engine like tank commander, shades of doom or Sarah (great if your a harry potter fan).

judgement day is certainly one of the better space invaders audio games around, ---- there have been so many it's got it's own catagory in the database. Judgement day is certainly though the only one with as many crazy unlockables, ---- though sme others like Alien outback have slightly more in the way of enemies.

In terms of fighting fantasy, well actually they're all now being re-released, some even for Iphone, ---- though annoyingly in a completely inaccessible state (I did E-mail the publishers about this but never got an answer).

However, obviously online is a great way of publishing books. A lot of ameter authors are writing gamebooks now usin some form of html. These include the fighting fantasy project and indeed my personal favourite, the chronicles or arborell.

then, a mention must also go to project.aon, where the Lone Wolf series of gamebooks are now being published for free on line in accessible html versions, ---- deffinately worth a look as well.

Re: Introductions

Hi
I'm Overpowering Destinystar. I've been blind since birth and up until a few years agonever hat audio games existed. I never really understood how this site worked until reciently. It's really great because I don't have to go searching on google through dozens of pages to find the links to them. I'm sorry about my bad spelling. I rely very hevily on spellcheck.

Re: Introductions

Welcome, slight whoops with the double post there. Don't worry about your spelling so long as we understand the general idea.

Re: Introductions

Greetings star, and welcome to the site and forum.

Any questions about either the forum or database please just ask.

I'm always pleased when someone says they find the database useful, sinse it means the times when I occasionally get off my lazy behind to add stuff, it's worth while.

In fairness, www.pcsgames.net also has a rather fantastic overview of websites concerning accessible games as well. If you want a general idea of what's out there accessible games wise, ---- you could do worse than checking there.

Hope you have fun on the forum and playing games.

Btw,I took the liberty of deleting your second post, ---- hope that's okay. You probably just hit submit twice by accident, ---- something everyone has done occasionally and really not a problem.

Tried a couple of the fighting Fantasy gamebooks. Very nice. Haha, loved that enthusiastic audio review you did of the project, too...you definitely should do more game reviews/walkthroughs like that.

Now my woman says that after perhaps overzealous criticism of other peoples' habits I am becoming one of those mad, drooling creatures known as a Gamer. I assure all that it's just an intermitent phase. lol
