Hi there.
As you can see by the title, I'm happy to announce that Microsoft Narrator will be coming to minecraft in the next version (1.12). Although it will start only by reading the chat messages, just think 1 year ahead.
Currently the features are being tested in the new snapshots of minecraft.
You can read the full changelog here: https://minecraft.net/en-us/article/min … hot-17w13a

Thanks very much for posting this.

I bet Karate25 will be pleased with the potential for accessibility this has, though I personally think it'll be somewhat limited.  But as you say, imagine what this could do a year or so from now at least.

OK... I did not... expect... this... at all. Mind blown. In a good way. But a question, is this the xbox or the pc version?
Also, right now the narrator thing isn't in the current snapshot changelog. Which leads me to another theory but I don't want to say that just yet, because I think that will blow people's minds even more... or will it? big grin.

@post 3

The title specifically says PC haha.

also, adding narrator is great and all, but I'm wondering if that's as far as it's going to go, or if they're literally going to try to make it playable for blind people, which would be hella cool.

Hi.
Sounds awesome. I have read through the changelog but don't find any information regarding Narrator. I look forward to hear more about this.

Best regards SLJ.

Thats narrator, but it only works for the chat messages atm.

I thought this was an april Fools ting at first. If this is true, I wouldn't mind trying it, at least.

2017-04-01 00:24:41

yeah, this would be cool.
although, I do wish they'dmake it playable on the pc without a remote controller.

sightless, you'd better believe I'm excited for what potencial this has, of course, I'll patiently wait and see what happens with this, it would be better for me if they put it on the xbox 1s, since narrator is involved here, but one step at a time I suppose. I've always been extremely curious about mindcraft and know that you can build what ever you want pretty much, I've even heard of whole groups of inhabitants, I suppose that's what you'd call players of mindcraft, building whole cities themselves and running them. That would be so cool. Again, I won't get my hopes up too high right now, but I'll admit it I'm getting very excited and interested in the developments going on now that Microsoft has made and is still making the xbox accessible. I think they've started something and have gotten the attention of developers slowly but surely. I'll be watching these forums.

Wait, wait, I'm slightly confused here.
Are we talking about the mine craft from telltale games, or the other mine craft, where you can build things and do things depending on the module you have?
If it's the latter, that would be great if it was accessible. My friend plays it all the time.

This is not the game made by the Telltale games.

This is not April Fools, it was already added to Minecraft Education Edition back in January:

https://thejournal.com/articles/2017/01 … s.aspx?m=1

Don't get too excited though, narrator is not actually being added to Minecraft. It's just text to speech for chat, nothing more. Having that added does not mean a first step is being made on a general narrator roadmap.

#15 I know it is only for chat messages atm. If they aren't testing accessibility stuff with minecraft why would they then take the time to implement the tts feature for chat messages.

@11 right... sure.

I see all this excitement over the littlist things and it is disappointing to me. Sure, be optimistic, fine, but don't be getting your hopes up, something may come of this, but then again it may not be. Think about how it would be a complex project to make a full 3D game accessible for a second, think of all the things that would need done.

Ironcross you might be right, and I do agree with you. Having tts for chat messages only isn't really a huge leap forward towards accessibility. However, on the flipside of the coin, it is something, and we got to celebrate over the little things.

They're implementing the TTS feature for chat messages due to a law that states that all communication-related stuff must be accessible in pretty much everything going forward.

2017-04-03 18:03:05

Oh? So does that mean the game itself will not be made accessible?

They most likely did it to comply with the US law. Who knows.

A pity it probably only works for Windows 10 as well as Narrator. I bought Minecraft several years ago before I lost my vision. It would have been nice to revisit it again, but I have JAWS and Windows 7 and I'm not upgrading to Windows 10.
