Thanks you guys. I'll start to work on that soon. I'll have to do the  audio  before Monday, because I have to send my computer back to dell for repairs to damage I didn't cause.

@ea_accessible, let me make sure I understand...

During a running play for the offense, it is important that the player know:

* Which is the optimum direction to run -- indicated by an arrow that works like a compass.
* Where nearby defenders are--the direction the defender is in relative to the player.
* How close defenders are--the range the defender is from the player.

So if I were only using sound. I might use a tone to indicate which direction to run--with the idea that the player wants to keep that tone in front of them and centered as much as possible. There might be a couple ways to do that.  One might be a floating tone that moves relative to the player.  The other might be to use just a few tones to indicate if the player is on course or if they need to turn left or right to be on course.

I probably should explain the second option. If the runner is faced in the correct direction, they would hear a sound telling them they are on track or possibly they would hear no sound.  If they are off track, they would hear different sounds or tones. For example, if it would be faster for the runner to turn left to get back on course, they would hear a tone/sound from the left or a tone/sound that indicates they should turn to the left. It might also be possible to indicate how far off the track they are by varying the volume or pitch of the tone/sound. The louder/higher the further they need to turn in that direction to be on track. The lower/softer the pitch/tone, the closer they are to being on track.

To indicate the direction and range of defenders, you might be able to do something similar. This is just an example. Each defender will emit a breathing or footstep sound.  The player knows where the defender is by the direction of the sound and knows how close the defender is by the loudness of the sound. I suppose you could also use vibration to indicate the range of the nearest defender--kind of like feeling the vibrations of footsteps.

Just in case you are unaware, I feel I also should mention that we do have a few people on these forums who specifically design games for the blind and they might also be able to provide ideas. For instance, @aprone is one who's work I am most familiar with. His FPS Swamp is fairly popular and I expect he dealt with some of these types of issues in designing his game. I also think he has tried at least to incorporate vibration and possibly other feedback in his games. He is not the only one--just the one I am most familiar with.

Is there any articles that explain what capability controllers have for vibration? I am assuming they allow you to vary the types of vibration, strength, and duration. I am not sure what else they allow you to do.  I will admit that I am most familiar with the use of vibration as a feedback mechanism for ultrasound devices that give someone who is blind an idea how far and object is that is in front of them.

Hi.
Enjoy your job and no need to stress to keep up with this topic. I'm so glad and thankful that you're spending your free time on this...

@ea_accessible, I was talking to a accessibility colleague today about this forum thread. He has evidently been playing Madden from the early days. He has a mobility impairment, not a visual impairment--but we had a good discussion about the challenge you are taking on. We ended up talking about potential ways to solve particular problems as well as thoughts on how to tackle Madden as a whole--in our work, we frequently end up having to figure out an approach to making a complex application accessible while working with a project team that may not know a lot about accessibility yet. If you want, I would be glad to try to spend a few days trying to write down the things we covered and that he mentioned either as solutions or potential problems that might need to be solved.  Also, if at some point you would think it would be useful to have a conversation, we would both be willing to try to offer whatever advice or assistance you might think you need.  Honestly, we are typically glad to offer help to anyone who wants to make the world a bit more accessible.

Dropping in quickly - any and all info is always welcome. I'm interested in identifying what works and needs to be kept, what causes problems, and possible solutions. All types of accessibility are important.

2017-03-25 02:05:30

Hmm. Are you familiar with Peter Meijers [Image to Sound] rendering? I can think of a few things it might help with, such as a way to present information of the play field with selectively rendered depthmaps from the rendering pipeline.

Hello audio gamers and video gamers alike!
I promised a couple of weeks back that I would do at least an  audio demo of the game. I have one! It's not perfect,  there is some choppy  audio, and I don't think I explained everything!  But I need some feedback on how to use twitch, so I can do live streams!
Anyways, here is the dropbox link for my demo, and I hope you enjoy and please feel free to leave constructive feedback !

Thanks so much!

Hi Darrell,

I think this was a great recording. I can show you how to set up Twitch, providing you can stream the XBox screen to your computer screen so that Open Broadcaster Software Classic can stream it.

Alternatively, Microsoft now intigrates with Beam Pro, which I hear is now accessible with Narrator. I don't know how to set that up as I don't have an XBox One, yet... but if you can set that up, you can start streaming games with a click to Beam.me.

You can also do that with Twitch, but the Twitch app I hear is not accessible yet using narrator.

HTH.

Hi Darrell.
That was an awesome recording. Thanks so much for demonstrating how the gameplay and menus works.
It's difficult for me to hear when it's your turn to control a player, or if you're watching other players. It would be great to have a sound playing telling it's your turn to play. It is also difficult for me to get an idea about what you was actually doing to control the player. How to run, how to know direction you need to run in, how long you have to run and how to do all the other controls. For me it sounded like the game did a lot of things automatically.
The recording gave me a much better idea on how the game is played. I think there is a huge learning curve for me to learn to play the game, but it might be more simple than it sounds like. smile
Can you tell more about how much the game do automatically, how you know it's your turn to do something, how you run and know what way to run and for how long, and some more information on the other controls to play the game? It sounds like the game is much more playable than I thought when you know what you're doing.
Again, thanks so much for the recording...

Best regards SLJ.

THat depends on wich side of the ball your on. You have the offense and the defense. It's easier for me to explain it with offense,   but let's see if it makes sence. THe team on offense controls the speed of the game, or the tempo.  In other words the defense can't move unless the offense snaps the ball. You first start out on offense as the quarterback, you can think of him as the pilot or as they also call him the signal caller.  He looks over the formations, and decides before the ball is snapped what possible actions there are.  I should have shown off audibles,  but I didn't want to make the demo too complex.  Anyways,  once the qb calls for the ball from the center, your in control of him. If you hand off the ball to your foolback or running back, you become in control of them. If you throw the ball to  one of the  wide recievers, when  the ball is in the air your in control of them. How well  your players behave is based on there raidings, and um, well,  raidings can be changed.  And no it's not against the rules to change there raidings,  but needless to say, the higher the raiding the  better your player  performs. You can switch to different players, and again, I'm sorry that  I didn't cover it. But you as the end user,  or the one with the controller, only can control one player at a time. Ther are 21 other players on the field at a given time, so yes, a lot of  it  is automatic.

Thanks for your reply. It makes a bit more sense. For me it's just difficult to tell when you have to control a character or not.

SLJ,
I'm glad that my explanation helps. I play other sports games, so if you would be interested in them, I'd be glad to provide demos of them as well.
Also,  to Oren, I'd greatly appreciate the help, and yes I can stream to my pc. If I could get ops to record the audio and video so I could upload it to youtube, without using twitch, I would be honored. Beam I haven't tried yet, because it goes to xbox live, and I don't know if you would have to have an xbox live account to view it. Keep the suggestions and feedback coming!
The encouragement is nice!
Thanks,
Darrell

It would be nice if you make for the NBA games, NHL or MLB

going in to the wilds, collecting pokedex, and capturing them are my kind of thing,
training them, making them evolve, and generally making them stronger is my ultimate goal,
fighting other manamon tamers, winning the tournament, and fighting octoros are what these manamons like to do,
and ultimately, I become the master of mana!

Yes, I record videos offline all the time with OBS and upload them to Youtube, so I can help you with that.
Should I email you instructions on it?

Hello Karen and welcome on the forums!

So, I read through this topic and only one question is still in my head:

It's so fantastic EA is considering blind gamers in their games and I'm happy about that even if I prefer more action oriented games or racing games. One game from EA I played so long was Fightnight champion and I must say this game is just simply amazing! Fantastic voice acting and sound design makes it mostly playable. Why mostly? Well, UI as usual so We can't read any options. I completed the story mode but it was really hard. I have no problem with fighting but when I'm knocked down, getting up is definitely not accessible for us as it's visual-based and if EA could use a stereo audio cue where to move the analog stick it can work just great!

But let's back to the main topic: I don't know absolutely nothing about Madden so can't say so much. Can I just ask what about PC users? I think it's important and not everyone have a console. When talking about screen reading apps it's much easier to implement this feature on PC than on the consoles so that'd be cool!

Hi.
At Darrel, wow, that madden stream was awesome, I really apreciate your work for this.
One question I have, is there a way to contact you? Because I am a really huge fan of sports games, more than fighting to be honest, if I look for a new gaming system, my first look actually goes to sports games xD.
So, if you could tell me what sports games are accessible to fully blind people, that would be very awesome.
Greetings moritz.

Hail the unholy church of Satan, go share it's greatness.

2017-04-07 11:23:38

You can email me. My email is [email protected]
However, to say that any sports game is fully accessible is a misleading statement. It's about memorizing the controls, and for a lot of it, having someone help you set it up.
However, I can give you my tips on how to play them, as I have EA access.
I hope to hear from you soon.
Darrell

I find this post incredible, for this main  reason.

1. for years I have been badgering EA to make Football Manager accessible, which by the way is 98% text based, and they proceed to give me excuse after excuse saying it would cost to much money for little profit. I actually disagree I believe there are thousands of blind people just waiting for these types of games. Just adding sounds and and a million button combinations and expecting all blind people to have a rain man memory bank is just unrealistic.

2017-04-12 03:08:49

hi Karen,
I am interested in playing madden nfl on my android tablet and phone. and on my windows 10 home laptop. perhaps you could create, for windows10 users, allow madden nfl to push text to sapi5 or to the NVDA free screen reader controller client dll to make the game more playable so we know what plays and teams and menu options we are choosing. Also with the android game, certain touch gestures could do certain things in the game maybe a two finger double tap would turn on accessibility mode which would use android text to speech to help blind players, and certain swipe gestures and taps could enable much easier game play. this also goes for other sports games EA-games has such as baseball and hockey games. Please try to make all EA-games accessible if possible especially on the windows 10 pc and android side of things. thanks very much. Josh Kennedy.

2017-04-12 03:11:21

oh my if all the EA-games for windows pcs and IOS and android were accessible this would be great! I will surely be following this topic! this is excellent! thank you for working on this EA-games folks.

2017-04-12 18:35:13

I would also like to see the sims games become accessible on pc and android, and also the need for speed and other popular EA games with accessibility.
