@Orin I know who he is, and he made the videos for me to see. I just invited him to the conversation here, so hopefully he'll be able to join, soon.

Apologies that I don't have much time to reply here today, but I am following along and will follow-up soon.

Hello to all,
I am the one who made the videos that were recently posted to this thread.
I am actually trying not to jump around my living room for joy, at the idea that EA is reaching out to the audio gaming community.
I will try to address as much as I can here,  but if anyone has any questions, please reply or email me, at [email protected]
First, to the person who said that I did not include suggestions, when I made these videos,  I had already discussed in detail with Karren, some of the major issues  that I had been experiencing.
One of the big issues is actually navagating around the game interface its self. For us, there is no speech feedback, wich without sighted assistance, makes the interface next to impossible to navigate.
I did several videos, and to the person who viewed them, there has been no likes, or comments or hardly any views, I hope this changes.
Also, I want to apologize for the lack of audio in the videos.  I can upon request, make other videos, with audio in the background, and a more detailed explanation of what the problems are.
For all of you who have suggested changes, they are most welcome. Screen reading feedback needs to be given through the entire interface, whare there is a menu and text that appears.   One of the big changes that could also help, and someone touched on this,  is 3-d audio through the game, to show whare players are on the field.
The  kick meter comparison, is comparing  madden 25, and madden 17. The biggest problem with the new kicking system as Karren knows, is timing the button presses for accuracy, power and  the start of the  kick.
Please all of you, if there are any questions, Please respond, or email me off the Foroum!
Thank you Karren, and hopefully this is the first step for big changes in the video gaming community!
EA Sports, it's in the game!

@Addolis A written list of what difficulties you've encountered would be super helpful to me. My issue is that I'm nearly legally deaf, to the point where I didn't know your videos lacked audio, I figured I was just missing something.

2017-03-15 00:29:18

1. No speech feedback in any of the menus. This is crucial if we are going to navigate the game interface, or play any of the game modes.
2. Audible feedback on the kicking meter is necessary if we are going to understand how to get the highest and most accurate kicks  possible.
3. More realistic commentary, perhaps a radio  commentary option.  Also, a more realistic pregame show, and halftime report, particularly in dynasty mode, whare other scores could be reported on during the game.
4.  The 3-d audio option allowing us to get a 360 degree audio presentation of the field.
If there is anything that I missed, please let me know.
Thanks,
Darrell

Thanks Darrell. Do you have any feedback on playing defense?

2017-03-15 00:41:37

As for playing defense,  that's a bit harder.
For me, I generally guess what is happening, and use vibration in the controller to figure out whare the ball is, and whare the player is that I need to tackle. One thing I would like to see  is more vibration when a player is about to mak an interception, or a sack, or a fumble. Right now, it's inconsistent,  and you have to guess.

Thanks,
Darrell

One more thing I would like to add, is  a lot of the aspects of the game are very visual.
For example when introducing the starting lineups, the game doesn't really do that.  I love the way that the buffalo bills radio network does it, at least introducing the main starters for both sides.  Also, during the superbowl game, I think the game should have a more elaborate start and ending.  There should be a cointoss, and there should be an introduction  done by the head ref during the game. After the game is over, there should be interviews for the wining coach, and reactions from the players.
The coaches interviews should take place during the games period, but that is just me.!
Thanks so much for reaching out!

First off let me start by welcoming you to the forum. Really appreciate having you here, in the work you're doing.
We have lots of smart people here, and I'm sure you'll get some good feedback as you can see from the previous post. I became visually impaired later in life, so my gaming was reduce significantly at that point. Only being able to play mostly fighting games.
I didn't discover audio games until nine years later. They have come along way.
The opportunity for mainstream games to be accessible is there, and I'm glad you're in that field.
The first Madden I tried was back on the SNES. The only sports game I have enjoyed, and broke many a night's plane was NBA street volume two.
I won't add more, because the screen reading for the menus,  and the passing. Are perfect places to start. Then we could work on the defensive side of it, like using your player user, and positioning your defense. I haven't watch someone play in a while, but MUT which I think stands for Madden Ultimate team. Would be nice to use. I'm going to go back, and watch some gameplay. Then hopefully I can come up with new ideas. Again welcome to the community, and I apologize for the long post.

Someone  asked if there was an easier way to navigate the playbook system.
Yes, it's called by play type.
When you first start a game on offense,  you press down 3 times and a if you are on the xbox 1.  From here, from left to right it's Pass, Run,  option, and Special. This is moving from left to right.   In the pass area for example there is: Quick pass, Short pass,  Shotgun, Play action, and Hale marry.
Those 5 options are going vertically on the screen, so you would navigate up and down.  This would probably be better explained in a video or two, or 3, or 4, so if anyone needs anymore information, please ask.
Thanks,
Darrell

@Addolis Things like this help drive home how painful the game can be to play. I know videos are easier for you, but if these types of questions could be answered in text form, it actually really helps me get meaningful feedback back to the team.

I understand.
If there is anymore explanation that you need, or that anyone else needs, I'll try and be as detailed as I possibly can.

Hi ea.
I think that you will working not only on making accessible games for us.
I am thinking about another titles from electronic arts.
My dream is to play The sims, I think that improving accessibility isnt difficul, or Need for speed.
I am not a fun of sport games, but I will see what has been done if all accessibility will be improved.
If it will be in latest or upcoming fifa game, I will check that.

2017-03-15 03:48:13

Hey OP if you are invovled with the team, then you'd remember the (badly implementedd) Kinect voice controls.

Now I'm not saying you or the team had anything to do with that, BUT.....something like that voice recognition stufff could work very well.

Watching the old ones the NFL put on Youtube they actually do go through the teams, or at least did (I'm talking Elway's era here), in the 97 one they went through the entire starting offense for both teams, and even introduced both coaches last so that's something that could work and I do believe the commentary does at least mention the QB a bit on an opening offensive possession. That being said, eAccessible, I would ove for you to get together with the team at Tiburon and honestly....and I KNOW this is a long shot, but......I would love for you guys to invite blind gamers to the presss/Youtuber gatherings you guys do.

Every year you EA guys invite big Youtubers to help hype up the game, now, eAccessible, I don't begrudge that, I know how marketing works.but...and I have a sneaking suspicion you're under an NDA here, but at least pitch the idea to your team/higher ups that you guys say 'Alright, this time we are going to invite blind gamers/disabled gamers to the offices to sit down with the devs and get their feedback playing X build of the game or Y build and really listen to them', instead of inviting big Youtubers out there who, being blunt, are just there as marketing mouthpieces and not disabled in any way.

Being even more blunt, why would somebody like....say...QJB give a fuck about accessible modes? Much as I like the guy, he's not disabled, he's not blind, he has no idea what blind gamers go through honestly, IMHO you EA guys need to sit down with blind and disabled gamers and really let them go through every facet of the game while it's in development frankly.

EDIT: I remember Madden 07 had little mini cut scnes after a game with interviews BUT those were canned animations with no sound or anything. As much as I think it'd be neat, what purpose would it really serve? I mean you'd end up skipping it after a few times anyhow.first few times

Hi Darrell.
Thanks a lot for joining the discussion as an experienced Madden player.
If possible, it would be awesome if you can make a video where the audio is much better from the game. Maybe hook up the sound to your computer and activate your mic at the same time, or maybe use a stereo mic in front of your speakers so we can hear where the sounds are coming from if this is important to be able to play the game.
Then, you could pause the video to explain what's going on, and how to deal with it. Because things seems to happen so quickly so it's difficult to explain what's going on and how to deal with it. It would be awesome to have a full match recorded this way, so us who don't know much about madden or american football can get a better idea on what's going on.
If the visuals is not that important, you can just record it in audio, which might be much easier.

Best regards SLJ.
Feel free to contact me privately if you have something in mind. If you do so, then please send me a mail instead of using the private message on the forum, since I don't check those very often.

As it relates to actually streaming a video like most of the sighted gaming community does,  I have never done that before.  I would love to record a video or audio stream of a match and explain what is going on,  so if anyone has done anything like this,  please let me know how to do this, and I'll be more than happy to deliver.

@Addolis I've never done that, but I have done live twitch feeds from my xbox one. I don't know if it's possible to save twitch videos.

Thank you everyone for all the feedback. I'm reading and digesting it all, even if I'm not replying to each person directly. There will be new threads on other games in the future, once I have time to do a bit of research on them first. The goal is to come up with a plan of attack on a per-game basis. I'd like to figure out how we can best approach a single game before opening it to other games.

I do understand that it's difficult to give feedback on games that aren't already accessible. If anyone has suggestions as to what else I can do to help with Madden, I'm open to suggestions. The links on the first page should hopefully give some idea. Madden does have tutorials, but they have their own accessibility issues - there are targets you have to move to on the field, for example.

2017-03-15 17:16:41

I do have the twitch ap, but it is not accessible with narrator.  I did find a nice article about streaming your games using windows 10, so I still may be able to do it that way.  If anyone has any suggestions about the twitch ap, go for it.

Forum/narrator question - is it ok to post more text after quoting someone? I don't know how posts are navigated in narrator. Just checking, as it occurred to me half my text in my last post might be lost.

2017-03-15 17:32:22 (edited by ea_accessible 2017-03-16 00:35:37)

@Addolis I can load up the xbox one twitch app and give directions on how to use it, if that would help. The UI is pretty simple. The downside is that sometimes it can take a frustratingly long time between steps, and I don't know if there are audio tones for when timeouts happen (deaf problems).

2017-03-15 17:32:43

You said that you didn't know how to save twitch videos.  And yes, it should be very possible with narrator.
