Yep, see my thoughts on the news.
i'm really sorry this has happened, he will be missed, and not just for the games he wanted to complete (I still find it surprising to see a monthly chat topic without Tom contributing).

RIP Thomas. I too am shocked to hear this news, and you will be greatly missed by everyone, not just in the AG community, but in the blind and VI community as a whole.

damn, well, I can't say I have played any of his games as I didn't get into audiogames until a couple years ago. But R.I.P anyway. And 38 is too damn young to die, I just turned 30 two days ago... erg.

hi. i'm shocked aswell about these news. and for me not his games, as his kind of persons matters more. i don't know him personally, but i've read his posts.
i can't believe that a new person died. but when was this happening and how?

2016-03-04 19:32:11

I'm so shocked and so sad.  He was one of those amazing people I never knew but wished I had.  38 is cruelly young to be taken.  Rest in peace, Tom.  In the words of a song: "Go on and show all those stars what it means to shine."  And today my thoughts are with his family and those close to him who have to find the strength to go forward.

Taking care of my sheep, pigs and mangle-worzles! :)

2016-03-04 20:23:09

This is so sad. And as all the people said before, 38 is much too young to die these days. Especially with how his last few months had been... Dragon tears for you, Thom. Rest in peace. Hope it's better there than it is here.

No words I write will do this tragedy justice, and yet one such as myself trys his best to find ways to express his thoughts when a life that has clearly touched others including my own is lost.  For some people, we're talking about the loss of an audiogame developer, and this is of great importance to those of us who truly appreciate audio games of every size and depth.  For others, he will be remembered as a powerful and intelectual voice within communities who instructed while seeking answers and truth.  Some people lost a close friend; a child lost his father. We say it was too soon, but the truth is that, it would have been too soon even a hundred years from now.  God's grace and peace be with those who are deeply and profoundly effected and left behind, morning his abrupt and disheartening departure.

When life gives you oranges, demand lemons since everyone else is obviously getting them.

I'm really shocked as well, especially because he wasn't older. Only 38 years old... That's terrible. Some extreme sickness must have been the reason for that, maybe cancer. I'm shocked... His last post on the forum is from the 9th of august 2015, but well, I thought he just was busy. R I P, Thomas... You'll be missed for sure.

Best regards SLJ.

Yes he was battling illnesses like eye infections for several years. Last status was that he was actually doing well so this is even more surprising.

I don't really think anything I can say will do it any justice here, but R.I.P Tom. We're only in march and this year really hasn't been kind to us. Thoughts are with your family, and the realization that we can never truly appreciate what we've got til its gone. I wish I could write something 10 times more meaningful here, but there's definitely a time where less is a whole lot more.

2016-03-05 02:43:42

The only thing I heard from him was...I don't know, something about he seriously injured himself and recoverring or something. Then the last post stated that everything seemed fine...too fine to believe that he's already gone. I wonder what got him.

He certainly will be missed. He was a great game developer as well as quite an active member of the open source community, linux and such. His use of Linux is actually what got me into trying linux in the first place. Rest in peace Thomas, and hopefully someone, somewhere can finish his games as he would've wanted to, and even if that doesn't happen, his legacy can still live on as audio game developers continue making great games, hell if we made some games for linux as well that's not only something that Tom would've wanted, it would be a revolution for all the linux users.

Hello all,

I am shocked and very surprised as well, the last news i also heard was that it went some better with him. A tragedy for the audiogames community, but not only the community, but also for the blind and visually impaired people in whole. But not only by the blind and visually impaired, but also for the sighted who embraced him.
Rest in peace thomas wart, and may god embrace you and welcome you in his house. Where you are, i know you will have it better.

I did come across the news yesterday, and as soon as I read the topic there was this oh shit, kind of a shock or a jolt if you will that I experienced for a second.
didn't really know what to say then, nor do now, in fact.
I hadn't  really talk to him, but still sad to have him no longer around. His views and presence shall be missed.
Its just a fuckin surprise, eh? a man can have plans, this or that, and suddenly death just kreeps upon you.
Ahh well, RIP,man

sad doesn't even begin to describe it. This is appalling news. Nobody deserves to die, but especially not at such an absurdly young age.

He and I had our little disagreements, but I'm sure he was a good person and did good work that we all benefited from. He was a powerful and friendly voice in this community, and I've no doubt elsewhere. And as others have said on here, he will surely be missed. May his spirit continue to shine brightly in all that we do and strive for.

RIP, Thomas.

Just myself, as usual.

I can't believe it. sad I have to admit that I didn't realize his absens in this forum, because I haven't been that active in the past myself. Just recently, I was wondering about Tomb Hunter I and it's status. Therefore, it is even more shocking to hear about the death of another, very apreciated, nice and awesome person, known for his intelectual posts and his games he created or wanted to finish.
Rest in peace, Thomas Ward, your spirit will be kept alive.

To answer a couple of questions, from what I understand, Tom had a brain tuma. He had a lot of medical issues with various infections and other problems over the past few years (one reason why he didn't get as much done on game development work as I thought).
In December I believe there was a brief, and indeed quite abrupt message from him on the audeasy mailing list, which, as people may know, he was the moderator. One reason this is such a shock is that as has been said, last we heard he seemed to be getting better, or at least that was what we hoped.

Sad news indeed, and a major loss, especially to long time community members who likely knew Tom as a friend (some of my own and others' reminiscences see the topic in the news).

I'm still struggling to come to grips with this.
Tom was an absolute gem to have around.  He was friendly, and most importantly a fair moderator.  He was really supportive a year or so back when I was going through a harrowing situation of my own.
First it was Jim Kitchen and 6 months later now it's Thomas Ward.
RIP my dear friend, you really will be sorely missed.
