What is chipspeech?

2015-09-26 17:43:02

chipspeech is a vst (also standalone version included) that emulates various older speech synthesisers: IBM 700 (the influence for hal 9000), mozer (used in the first talking calculator), ti ms 5210 (used on echo 2), dectalk, and votrax sc-01 (used on the braille n speak).

Socheat, if you are wondering where to get Chipspeech itself, you can find it on Plogue's website. But, as americandad2005 pointed out, it is not accessible. It doesn't work like Vocaloid, at least, the lyric system doesn't. If you don't know what I mean, let's take the phrase "All your base are belong to us", which is one of the preset lyrics that you can use in the program. In Vocaloid, if you were to put it in a song, with a seperation between the word belong, you'd go:

all your base are be- long to us.

But in Chipspeech, each sylable advances with every MIDI note triggered, so you can't put dashes between words in order to seperate them. Not to mention that you can't just feed it a midi and you enter the lyrics manually since it's a VST, as far as I know, though I may be wrong on that so don't take my word for it. If you do want to seperate words like Vocaloid, the notes must be connected in the sequence. What I mean is, the DAW, or Digital Audio Workstation, you want to work with, must have a piano role for the VST to work so that it can be routed to it. Otherwise, it won't work. Back to what I was saying, you must connect the notes, so as long as the notes are visually connected in some way in the piano role, the sylables will advance. Sorry if this isn't worded right, I couldn't find a way to word it so that it makes it easy. The Chipspeech VSTaccepts input in both English and Japanese, which is a plus, in my opinion. And yes, the voices included, which are based on vintage speech synthesizers such as the IBM 704, Votrax SC01, DECtalk, the TMS5200 used in the TI series of calculators for various cartridges, the TSIS4001A I think it's called, the SP0256 AL2, the VOSIM software, have a very diverse set of parameters. It would be interesting to hear what raygrote comes up with when using Chipspeech in the updated album if it ever comes out.

Yeah, it will be very interesting. I am especially curious about what it sounds like when lady parsec sings there are 7 days.

I know, right? I could probably do that one either using her HD version or the original LPC version, but we'll have to see what happens.

yeah, it's about time chipspeech got involved.

high,
I just aquired a new mac computer and installed 2 virtual machines capable of running the software used to contribute to and maintain the album.
Ray, did you get started with your work?
also, does anyone know how to get machingboard to sing? Mockingboard was a sound card manufactured for the apple 2 in 1983. it has both music and speech synthesis and the speech part can sing (I know that because it is demonstrated in the pack in demo software). while the music part was heavily used and supported (especially by larger companies like EA and Oregen) the speech part was sadly overshadoed by the echo 2 and such that was rarely used. If anyone could do a mockingboard version of there are 7 days let me know. I am sure that louis briant and jasan smith might have the knowhow since they are quite familiar with the apple 2, as louis hoasts source code for nearly all the apple 2 games (at least those programmed in basic) and jasan has the preconfigured apple emulator.
BTW, Gross's version of merry had a little lamb was for echo2.
also, to anyone who has a doubletalk somewhere, could you get it to sing that song as well? Patrick perdue got it to sing a paroty of daisy bell so I know that is possible.

hello,
does anyone want to contribute to this album still?
also, I posted a few of the songs onto my arnaldfan1993 youtube channel. all the posted songs are from snoopy botton, except the vocal writer version of a whole new world which was dun by flint million.

I'll still be able to contribute my Chipspeech track, though it is taking a while due to university stuff getting it the way lately. If I can fit it in my schedule at some point, I might, just might, do additional Chipspeech tracks using the other voicecs if I wanted to.

2015-11-15 10:10:14

thanks family mario. by the way, are you considdering using chipsounds for the backing tracks? I came up with the following to map speech synthesisers to different sound chips:
lady parsec and terminate99: sn77489 (reason should be obvious)
votrax: ay8910 (those who read my last post can guess why)
sp025: ay8910 (both are from the same company)
the rest aren't mapped to specific sound chips, so feel free. I'm only giving these recomendations to help you, you don't have to go by them.

Actually, that sounds like a good concept. I like it. I just might be able to do that, I'll especially love working with the SN76489 since that was my favorite chip back in the day since I even still have an opened up ColecoVision and Master System exposing those chips for later uses. Again, that is a wonderful idea that I have on the table for backing tracks if I want to do some.

2015-11-15 20:07:56

also, if plogue ever adds vlm5030 support, the corosponding chips will be either sn76489 or 2a03.

I know that the other chips included in Chipspeech aren't associated with some chips in Chipsounds, so I made a list of which ones I would use including:

• Dandy 704/IBM 704: Most likely the POKEY chip.
• Otto Mozer/TSI S14001A: Probably SID since his voice is well known for being in Impossible Mission on the C64, though for that I will have to experiment with some things in Chipsounds to learn how to use SID.
• VOSIM/don't really know what chip he's from other than that he's from a voice simulator: I'll probably use the Game Boy chip if I'm gonna use him.
• Daisy: You probably don't know of this voice. Daisy is the newest voice, and the last HD voice after Lady Parsec HD, in Chipspeech and Plogue's new realtime singing synthesizer, Alter/Ego. Unlike the other Chipspeech voices, her voice doesn't come from a speech synthesizer. Instead, her voice is sampled from recordings of popular Vocaloid music producer Crusher-P. According to Plogue, Daisy is a time-traveler and is romantically involved with Dandy 704, likely in reference to the IBM 704 being the first to sing Daisy Bell. I don't know what chip I'll use for her, so I'm either going to use an instrumental from the web, or use a CPS2 SSF2 Soundfont.

Those are possible combinations I have when it comes to backing tracks. I'll also send the backing tracks themselves as separate tracks.

2015-11-19 21:38:33

thanks!
to be honest, when I thought daisy sounded a lot like microsoft marry. so you might use roland sc55 since that's what the microsoft gs wavetable synth is based off of.

I know that dosbox emulates sound blaster fm synthesis, so that would be good music for the text assist songs.

I agree with you. not only that, it would also sound like the backing tracks that Ian murry had back in 1998 with the dectoke project at the university of dundee.

I don't know if this would be sutable for the album, but in honor of bob prahan, could anyone get dectalk or some other synthesiser to sing the elements song by Tom lehrer? Or would "l-y" from the electric company be more sutable?

sorry to revive sutch a dead topic, but an update has been made to the album. It now has "I am slowly going crazy" sung by vocaloid, made by me.
the next update will most likely be a filename fix, as it was brought to my attention that jake gross had nothing to do with the version of merry had a little lamb that is present on the album, but rather Tyler zanchy who who sent it to jake for upload. I also learned that it was sung by keynote gold, not eco2.
the link is the same.

Do you think it would be possible to get keynote gold to sing "there are 7 days" for the new update as well?

hello,
I talked to ulisies garcia who was heavily interested in the album. from what I remmbr from the phone call I had with hiim, he said he might mmake some vocaloid songs (including a version of there are 7 days) for the album. I do hope these actually come to fruition, especially since we didn't hear from family mario since the last update.
