I can tell you that if you up and down arrow in the list of characters, they are like little check box items. You toggle the state of a person is checked or unchecked by pressing the spacebar on the person. Then you can press enter to go into whatever you are going into.

Yes, you will need to go into the prison and knife open the cell door which sounds like a locked door knob turning, and do it till the game says that the named person has escaped to the bass.
