I

mentioned this idea quite a long time ago when the old forum was still up,

but it bears bringing up again in my opinion. I'm a longtime fan of

Nintendo's Metroid franchise and I've wondered why in the years since

audio game development has grown more sophisticated, there has never been a

similar game. I remember a guy from the old forum actually got in touch with

me to tell me he was interested but after a few Emails we sort of lost

touch. Anyway, let's say that a Metroid style audio game were ever to be

developed. What features would y'all like to see implemented in it?

But wait, what's that? A transport! Saved am I! Hark, over here! Hey nonny non, please help!

metroid? what do you mean by that, like supermarios?
just obsticles,

weapons, cheats a little challenge, bosses you know.
just a good

challenging side scroller.

be ever aware of the silent tread of the angel of death.

2005-10-04 22:17:27

Uhm

no. Metroid was definitely not a sidescroller. It was more along the lines

of what you'd call a platformer. You had a huge world to explore and a load

of different weapons to collect, areas you couldn't access without

collecting certain items and a lot of jumping from platform to platform to

get where you're going...and did I mention the huge world? The Metroid

series saw you doing a lot of backtracking to old areas each time you

collected a new item because there'd be a place you couldn't get to on

your first visit.
The character in the Metroid games was a bounty

huntress named Samus Aran, who wore a cybernetic suit that gave her inhuman

strength and abilities, such as the ability to transform into a small round

creature that could slip into small passages she could not otherwise enter.

There were other enhancements she could collect which would give her even

more abilities, and of course different guns as well. And let me tell you,

the bosses in these games could actually be quite tricky. That's the kind

of game I want to see. It obviously couldn't be called Metroid but it would

have all the traits that made the Metroid franchise as popular as it is; the

huge world, plenty  of items and weapons, challenging bosses and puzzles.

Like I said I was briefly in touch with a guy who was interested in this

project like me but we lost touch after a while and his Email address is no

longer active.

But wait, what's that? A transport! Saved am I! Hark, over here! Hey nonny non, please help!

ya know

the SL engine is very extendable.  *grins*

Now

there's an idea...

which

is again brian why you and me need to sit down and hash stuff out.  I need

to bounce ideas off of someone on a super technical detailed level.

I

don't pretend to have an enormous store of technical knowledge at my

disposal but what i have I'd certainly be glad to share. Once I get back

into school I'm planning on taking some compputer classes so I understand

better how they work. Seems to me that'd help in designing games,

particularly if I ever decided to try to design an accessible gaming

console. I think that was one of the things I mentioned when I Emailed you

back during that Job Readiness class I was taking up in Boise. But yeah I'd

love to exchange ideas and see what we could come up with.

But wait, what's that? A transport! Saved am I! Hark, over here! Hey nonny non, please help!

lol.

it's not really program related.  it's more game play mechanics and

such.

Ah.

In that case I think we may be more into an area I might be more help in. I

might also have some good game ideas as well so it'd be interesting to see

what each of us thinks.

assassin here.
i have tonnes of game ideas, i just don't know anyone who

would consider using them and paying me for them.
i mean i could just whip

up a good game idea in ten minutes, but i don't know any developers who are

struggling for ideas.
if anyone is interested, post a reply and i'll get

in touch with you if you leave your e-mail address

I'm

in precisely the same position. My game experience is extremely large

(blind, but I've watched sighted people play a great many games, Metroid

included, and gotten detailed explanations of how things work and such). I

would love...utterly LOVE...a chance to get in on stuff like this. My email

address is publicly viewable, but for those who don't/can't find it

it's
[email protected]
if interested.

I'm unable to write

computer programs of any kind, but when it comes to game mechanics,

storyline and such, I'd like to think I'm at least decently good. *smile*

I had a couple ideas for SL2 that would definitely, if codable, spice it up

a little.

Alas, those will have to wait until Liam is able to invest the necessary

time into SL2 again. I also think it'd be neat if we had an audio game

similar to Eternal Darkness on Game Cube. Not many games give me the creeps

but Eternal Darkness was one of them. I can't count the number of times

I'd stay up late watching my dad play it and be creeped out by some of the

insanity effects. BTW, Liam, how do you want to do this. Should I send you

an Email? That might be easier than posting our ideas on this forum.

But wait, what's that? A transport! Saved am I! Hark, over here! Hey nonny non, please help!

sure.

e-mails are fine.  oh.  and I'm not paying anyone for ideas.  smiles.  but,

I do like suggestions for sl2.  trust me.  I actually do read them, and I do

write most of them down.

Extendable or not the levels are flat.  I think to make even SL2 a good

game you need to actually use a 2d system instead of a 1d one.  (things in

the air could be represented by higher pitches - and if you still want to do

randomly pitched object things for voriety the person'd tell because the

volume would be slightly lower)

Um

hello? Is someone forgetting the fireballs from SL1? That was a totally

airborne trap that you had to duck, as was the boss in Wild Woods. I always

thought Wild Woods could've done to have bats and such along with the

snakes and bears, after all...you can beat Wild Woods just by crazy-hopping

and running like hell, and a bat swarm out o' nowhere'd sure as hell keep

ya grounded.

I for one do like side-scrollers of that nature, although

you could make it interesting to have enemies, both ground and airborne (or

ones that can switch) shooting separate projectiles at you and such.

However...Brian's right. A Metroid-type game would be cool. Terraformers

has a wonderful-seeming engine for that type of thing but it's waaaaaay too

basic.
