Hi, all.
People are busy with a project where they are developing an add-on for NVDA where you can remotely control a computer with NVDA. It is still in beeta and they will at some point ask for funding to help with the development of the add-on.
You can visit their website at http://www.nvdaremote.com/
You can also listen to a presentation at http://www.cucat.org/cc/2014/20141213_nvda_remote.mp3

Have a nice day.

Hello.

This is awesome.  I've signed up and will be funding this project.

I'm gone for real :)

2014-12-15 14:42:00

Hello,
Wait what? This is going to be free?
OK, this is really going to be awesome.

2014-12-15 14:59:27

wow, that's awesome!

2014-12-16 07:55:19

While I do agree this does sound exciting, it's also in its very early stage.

I'm basing things off the demo I heard, but at the moment you still need the IP address of the computer you wish to control.

Jaws Tandom gives you a string which is needed on both machines to connect.

This, at least at the moment has a mutual agreed upon keyword or phrase that both users must agree on in order to connect.

I'm sure all this will eventually be ironed out by the time it is ready.

Something tells me, we still have a long way to go before the average computer user can use it.

2014-12-16 12:27:26

Will it be opensource under the GPL?

If yes, I will definitely make a large donation, but if not, they should be honest and make it payware.

It would be ironic if the opensource NVDA screen reader spawns closed source add-ons.

Not something I want.

I'm pretty sure it has to be.  They can't hide the sourcecode even if they want to.

\The average user can find their IP at this point, if not Google will help them in 5 seconds flat.
As well, even though most people are using DHCP by default, usually the lease timeout is quite long, I mean sure it'll be annoying to have to go get it again, but it doesn't take a genius to just go check your IP in the same way you did before.  We've got plenty of sites that will do it for you, and windows will also tell you locally.
It would be kind of nice if they built in a checker though, especially if it were able to input the IP in the box automatically.  If they are taking suggestions, I'll bring that up.
In the end I see it as a non issue at this point.  But that's just my opinion.

2014-12-16 21:19:30

Well I will be funding this project as it will help with remote admin work.
out of the 30 or so systems I manage, while a lot of these I just set up, 10 of those are remotes.
4 of them including my system and some family systems are in the same house and 1 is close buy so I can admin it in the weekend no issue.
However at least 2 are at least an hour from my house, and that means, that unless they break or I go to them, I have to have as much automatic stuff running in a bloatware state and hope it works.
Getting files to my systems is done via a shared dropbox folder which is the easy part.
But running the script for the files needs to be done on the remote.
I'd actually like to be honest to have something that could check a dropbox script run a batch file, and install everything that's in there assuming default locations without any problem, and restart, have it update everything and email me the result but that's still not total control and assumes it all works.
If something is wrong or things crash and the system is in a mess then I won't get my report back.
One of the systems I work on over the phone, the admin managed to mangle by moving his accounts wrongly.
It required me to physically install and reshare the dropbox folder and transfer his files over, loosing a bit of his email in the process.
and it needed physical access.
One feature I'd like with a remote app is a way to well run a virtual coppy of a machine instance, update that instance and then at some point write that instance to the system, once that instance worked, it wouldn't be a problem to just write that over.
Still though it would be good to have something that worked

I agree that it's fairly easy to find your IP address.
I have a feeling that this will be addressed more thoroughly as the add-on is developed.

I finally got around to listening to the podcast today. It sounds great, even in its current embryonic state.
I will certainly be supporting the project once they start taking donations.

Hi all.
It's finally time to help with the funding of this project if you feel like it. Here's a copy of the e-mail I got from the mailing list:
Hi guys, it's Christopher Toth, one of the developers of the NVDA Remote
project. I'm writing to you because you signed up to our mailing list to
be notified about our crowdfunding campaign.
I'm incredibly excited to let you know that we're ready to go! The
campaign launches today, and we need your help!

NVDA Remote promises to be one of the most incredible pieces of access
technology we've seen in the blindness world for a long time. We know
how we are going to build it. We have cleared our schedules, and are
ready to devote the time and effort necessary to create this awesome
project.
All we need now is the funding!

Check out our campaign on Indiegogo, and please contribute what you can!
http://igg.me/p/nvda-remote-access/x/9193299

We also need your help to spread the word. The more people that learn
about NVDA Remote, the greater chance we have to reach our goal, so
please let your friends know, and ask them to chip in.

We have created a few awesome perks to make our campaign more exciting,
including early access to a beta list, as we're eager to get feedback on
what we're working on, so be sure to check those out!

If you'd like to hear the NVDA Remote Access prototype in action, have a
listen to one of these demos:

Thank you, and have an awesome day!

I would like to use this addon to remote broadcast with my station. But I need to figure out how to get audio over the computer remotely I could try teamtalk with a private server and VAC.

Hello,
The campaign seems to be going well from what I'm hearing. I'm not sure of the total figures at the moment though.

If you're pashionate though, I wouldn't wait  to donate.

I'm surprised they raised so much money in such a short time. The campaign still has quite awhile to go. This is awesome. I'm glad to see so much interest in the project.
Did anyone else notice that, just hours, or maybe a full day before the announcement, Seratec unveiled their own promotional offer? That amused me.

Nope? I myself did not. Though I'll go and look at that blog entry again. smile

I truly feel that NV Remote is gonna be used by way more people.

2015-03-16 15:34:34 (edited by Socheat 2015-03-16 15:36:05)

and now, the funding has increased to $11,840USD (118%).

2015-03-16 22:22:39

It will probably reach its peak sometime soon. Lots of people who might otherwise have donated will see that the goal has been reached, and probably not bother. But then again, the response has been overwhelmingly positive, so who knows?
