Hello all,

I have a few questions about game licences.

The first is about "Hunter" from BSC games. I know that it closed its doors, but I would very much like to buy a licence. Does maybe one of you have a licence and would sell it? Then please send a private message! Thanks!

The other question concerns GMA games. I would like to buy licences for "Shades of doom" and "Lone wolf," but another blind gamer told me to be careful with that, he said that he had severe problems with GMA games when trying to buy his licences. Is that normal or can I buy the licences without worries?

Thanks in advance for your replies!

Regards,

Stardust2

PS: Please excuse my mistakes - English is not my native tongue, but I do my best...

Hi Stardust.

first as regards hunter, another person cannot sell you a license sinse they are specific to each computer and need to be generated for that machine. Bsc did sell a license key generator briefly before they closed their doors in 2013 It's a very bad state really sinse at the moment nobody without the ability to generate the license can have a new one, however Bsc haven't given permission for the key generator to be passed around or made the games abandoneare.

I'll also add that as per the faq, requests for, or attempts to pass around software that is still on sale will get you into serious trouble on the forum, though in the case of Bsc I do recognize that this is a bad situation as they are both no longer selling the games but not allowing anyone else to get them.

As regards Gma, I don't know what you were told but there are no problems with buying Shades, lone wolf or any of their titles. The only slight issue is if you want two different license keys for two different machines you have to get them separately, but even that is being fixed as Gma are upgrading their new licenses to their game accounts system. So, feel free to go ahead and buy the games from them, Gma have some great games that are more than worth playing.

Thanks @Dark for the informations!

Sorry, I haven´t read the complete FAQ before posting - that was a mistake. So thanks for your understanding concerning hunter!
Oh, and I didn´t want to just ask for the key, I wanted to buy it - for its original price so that there wouldn´t be a problem... OK - that was wrong, I know it now.......

OK, then I´ll go to GMA now and get my keys. ;-)

Hi Stardust.

I realize that you weren't intending anything wrong with your request to buy the hunter key, and in fairness  Justin from Bsc has handled this situation very badly sinse he should have released the games and abandonware, unfortunately though sinse he didn't there isn't a lot that could be done at this point.

With Gma however I hope you enjoy the games, Shades in partiular is a real classic if you enjoy action games, Gma tank commander is also definitely worth a look. Lone wolf and Time of conlict are more difficult, but worth playing if your of a strategic frame of mind.

It is pretty pathetic and unfortunate how bsc games handled that situation.  I purchased all of there games as they were released and enjoyed them greatly.  I should've bought that key generator when it was available, I remember seeing the post.  Maybe we can maturely write a letter to justin and see if he would relent?  These games shouldn't be lost to time.  It's been years since I've played them but I remember really enjoying pipe 2 because of the various gameplay genres covered.

Hi.
@blindj, I like your idea. Has anyone tried this?
I too didn't like how Justin handled the situation. However, I would have bought the keygen when it was being sold, as I very much enjoyed those games, particularly pipe 2 and troopinum. The troopinum boss is actually quite challenging, at least I think so.

I also think that it´s a good idea to write to Justin. Could, please, an English-native-speaker do that? I would find it - hm - more "serious" to receive an important letter/mail without too many mistakes in it... ;-)

@Dark: I bought codes for shades of doom and lone wolf as they are, after testing the demo versions, my absolute favourites. It´s really time for the weekend to begin now! ;-)

2014-10-31 10:26:37

@Stardust, enjoy!

To everyone else, unfortunately I don't know where to contact justin or what his e-mail is, but I do think this is a good idea. I have a copy of the keygen myself but I think it's a shame that Justin's games won't be around in the future, and after all it wouldn't have cost him anything to release the games for free the way Lworks did recently with Superliam.
Before anyone asks, we can't really share them on this forum without them being officially abandonware unfortunately.

I see...
I have just looked for an address from Justin, but couldn´t really find one. Here are two links to profiles of him, but I don´t know if he still checks on them and/or if the mail-addresses behind the profiles are still active... Here they are:
http://www.linkedin.com/in/jdauben
and
--- second link follows in a second message, I just got the error-message that only one link per post is allowed.

I didn´t install hunter on my new computer yet as I didn´t want that these few demo-days begin yet, but could one of you who has this or another BSC-game installed yet check the game-documentation for mail or real addresses please? I fear that they don´t work any more as well, but it´s worth a try...

Here is the second link now:

It is on French, I don´t understand most of it, but there is a contact-link as well.

Hi Stardust.
If you can you should definitly buy all of the gma games since they are absolute classics. I played the demos of bsc games years ago and never really liked them. I remember being able to beat the demos in a half an hour or so and figured the full game couldn't be much longer. This is just my opinion but I never wanted to buy them gma was more interesting since there was a lot more gameplay involved in those games.

Daniel Zingaro also worked on the games (to be honest, I'm not really sure what Justin's involvement even was), and he is still around.  Not in the capacity of gaming, but he is reachable.  I don't think it would be a good idea for everybody to rush and send the poor guy a bunch of mail, so this should probably be handled in a more organized fashion, if people are interested.  I too think that Justin handled this in a pretty poor manner.

Actually, this might help.  Turns out Justin is on Linked In so perhaps he can be contacted that way.

2014-11-01 10:20:36

I agree with Scotf on the Gma games.

The Bsc titles were some of the first games I bought back in 2006, well Hunter, Troopanum and Pipe 2 anyway.

Yes, they are absolute arcade and definitely reaction fests, though I will say the gameplay changes on higher difficulties, though possibly not enough to justify much. Hunter is imho the best, and that for it's audio ambience and atmosphere and the fact that your effectively getting a large set of smaller arcade challenges each with slightly different rules and mechanics, rather than the pure reaction fest of Troop 2 or the management of different factors that was Pipe 2.

We do have better arcade titles now, blind swordsman, somethinelse on Ios, however I would still be sorry for the games to Vanish, especially Hunter for it's very atmospheric audio, which is why I approve of the idea of contacting Justin.

One method might be to have several people club together buy the licenses from him perminantly to have the games released as abandonware, if indeed he's not working on them at all.

I'm not sure how much that would cost, but being as he sold fthe Keygen and all the setup files for 75 uss, I assume he'd be willing to enter into some sort of arrangement, though if he were asking several thousand we might be in trouble.

Now I'm slightly confused as per something you said Here

Dark wrote:

Moderation!
Well it is true these games are no longer available and should be, however equally   Justin himself hasn't made any statements about the games being abandonware, so I think this likely calls for the same deal as with code factory.
Ie, Yes, people can post links to hosted copies of the games, however, if Justin requests that they be removed, as creator of the games this topic will be deleted and any further posting of links to obtain free copies will result in the usual penalties.

As a matter of fact in that topic there are quite a few links stardust, so until something can be cleared up you should be able to get what you need there.
As far as contacting justin goes I believe this was already discussed back when the announcement occured and Thomas aproached him about hosting the games or maybe even reselling the licenses (not exactly sure which), but Justin's reply was very odd, as if he wanted to erase blindsoftware from existance big_smile
Anyway, over a year has passed and I think it's very unlikely he'll start to care all of a sudden.

@Pitermach, that is a fare question and yes I confess I did bend the rules at first. the problem is sinse then we've had a couple of people who have tried to pass around still available games who sighted that as an example, "Well you let people post links to this"

I don't want the rules to seem arbitrary and I don't want to risk present developers who need the game sales being hard done to.

I won't delete the above topic or start handing out moderations to anyone who passed copies of the game around, but as I said this is a genuine case where I'm not sure what the best thing is to do for the community, sinse on the one hand as I said I certainly don't want the Bsc games to vanish forever, however on the other I do't want people to start using this forum for things they shouldn't, irrispective of Justin or the legal status of things.

Heck, even with code factory it turns out some of the games were still on sale at one point, though I believe this was a back catalogue of stock being sold by a general vender not directly sold from Code factory themselves.

A couple of things here:

First, I didn't know Super Liam was abandonware. I thought that Liam was unwilling to release everything as abandonware because of the many in the past who had bought the games who might be annoyed that everyone else gets them for free now.
I'm a bit confused, but if there is a fully playable version of Super Liam I'd like to have fun with it. Heh.
Incidentally, I've had all kinds of difficulty getting a replacement key for Super Egg Hunt from Liam; does anyone know which inbox he tends to actually respond to?

Regarding GMA games, I've never had any issue when I actually bought their games, but when contacting David Greenwood about getting a key replacement for Shades of Doom, I met another stone wall. He mailed me back once, I responded, and...that's it.

Honestly, I think this topic is a pretty strong object lesson. Developers who don't want to support their games anymore would do well to just release them as abandonware. Sure, there are going to be some ruffled feathers because people actually bought them back in the day, but that's just how it works. It's a lot like someone being annoyed if, say, they have to pay fifty dollars for a good crockpot and see the very same one for a dollar at a yard sale five years later. "I could've saved all that money!" But that's the way the world works. Both of these games have been around for a long time, and I think the pros of abandonware outweigh the cons. In the case of L-works, I've bought both Judgment Day and Super Liam and I can say, for myself at least, that I'd love those games to be abandonware; it doesn't bother me that I could've gotten the games for free by waiting for a long time, because I was happy to support Liam for his work.

I agree on abandonware Jaydde, several games I bought over the years became abandonware later, Tarzan Junior, Trek 2000.

Last I heard Liam had changed his mind precisely because people made arguements like yours.

With justin from Bsc though I don't think that is the reason. he's not stated why he refused to make the games abandonware, indeed sinse he finished his career as a game dev by selling all his stuff for 75 usd with a keygenerator to whoever would buy it before vanishing of the map, several people just feel he's being grasping and his principle reason for not releasing the games as abandonware is that that wouldn't make him personally any cash.

He never however said why he was doing what he was doing and as far as I know didn't communicate his reasons to anyone, so goodness knows, this is why I like the idea of sending him a deputation of some sort.

As to Gma, well with key replacements this is exactly why they're moving to an online account system where things like that are automated and don't require direct input from David Greenwood.

I don't think all his games are on the account system yet, and some you still have to run the wizard within the game to fill the form in and then send that info to David as before, but I think idea is to phase this out.

Btw, I never had problems getting key replacements myself from Gma, I just went through the wizard, added the new info and got my new key within two or three days.

Dark, the thing is that my email address has changed since then. I bought Shades of Doom in late 2009 I believe, using a yahoo.com account that is no longer active. The four-digit product code generated by any version of SOD I run now won't be the same as the one I had on my machine a few years back, either, so there's really nothing for the wizard to play with. That's why I emailed David; figured if I could give him my old email address and go about it that way, prove I at least bought the game, he could send me another key.

With Liam and Super Egg Hunt, I don't know why I don't have my key in my email anymore, but it's not there. I've checked.

Regarding BSC stuff, I think it's silly to do what Justin has done. 'Nuff said, really.

@Jayde, I do see why you contacted david about that one, it makes sense and I would've done the same myself, though like browser games and other online shops the Gma account system does allow for changes of e-mail address, which won't help with your previous shades key but will stop yourself or other people running into the same fix in the future.

Regarding the issue of games being made free and previous purchasers not being happy. Yes, you purchased that crockpot for $50, and now you could have it for $1, but you needed/wanted it back when you got it, otherwise you wouldn't have. And back then, it cost $50, so at that point, you made the right decision.

2014-11-03 01:06:56

As I said, it's not actually clear why justin is doing what he is doing. The problem is the old adage "the customer is always right" has fallen off the map and it's now an accepted social practice to claime that just because your selling something that gives you the right to treat people like a personal cash machine under the umbrella of "Ownership" I don't know whether Justin's motivations here were like this, but given his sale of the key generator and that that resembles a last ditch effort to squeeze as much cash out of customers as possible rather than showing a respect for people who might want to appreciate his work in the future, I will say a lot of people have questioned his motivations.

I don't want to start accusing Justin here of being a miser or similar as some people have, but I will say his behaviour is rather suspect.

May I ask where I can get the free version of super liam? I'd love to play it again

Superliam is On this page on Lworks There are links to download the demo and full versions, (don't know why he's still got the demo up now that the game is free, but hay).

Enjoy!

Dark, I'm not sure if that link is to the free version or not, or if that's the full version which requires a registration. I haven't checked. I don't have a link to the free version that Liam put out a while back, but I'll dig around for it if someone doesn't get it first.

Make more of less, that way you won't make less of more!
If you like what you're reading, please give a thumbs-up.

Hi Raygrote. The full version that requires a registration isn't on Liam's site anymore, the full version up for download is the free one.
